The reason for this post is because I read in the latest AFM’s(Feb. 2004) issue on page 20 states that “money for research and developement of the MAKO has allegedly not been forthcoming from the emirate and its future, at least in the UAE, must be in doubt.” In my opinion, the UAE is investing very heavy on new combat planes. It appears that the current training force of 20 or so HAWKs and its 5 MB-339’s cannot sustain the new pilots needed for the the air force. UAE must act fast to aquire used or new trainers. It looks like the MAKO is not going to make its target date and the UAE is going to be forced to make a decision very soon.

I am rather new in to this forum. I cannot help to understand how an industrialized nation like Italy, a country with experience in fast jet design, stole another jet design from a different company(Yak) and in a different country(Russia). Am I the only one here who thinks so? Is this the end result of a bad business venture? I appreciate that Aermacchi lost money in the deal in funding/developing but does that merely grant permission to capture the plans and “make” one of its own. Is it because Italy is able to “convert” an eastern design into a western or NATO standard? Don’t get me wrong here, the 346 is a very nice plane with great potential but lets not forget its Yak counter part. Aermacchi has a great chance to sell the 346 through it market power and it will probably be succesful at it. What puzzles me is how a respectable company is able acquire a design through industry and market loopholes and at the same time consider it a genuine product. 😡

I agreee with your statement of the RSAF being in the near future one of the most capable air forces in the region. Unfortunately, its position with the war with terrorism, in my opinion, has jeopardized its relationship with the US. U.S. can now afford to think twice before it can offer another complete arms package in the future. When the time comes, this will provide a golden opportunity for other countries such as France and Britain to take advantage and negotiate contracts. Of course, in the long run and in a long shot, China can also enter the market to make its mark and in doing so, establish a foundation with its defense and aerospace might.
