Interesting, but thorny.
First of all those who want the Islanders to get their wishes if 5,000 chinese immigrants arrived and settled and decided to become a french or portuguese colony would Britain accept that?Regarding the original post why not. The major western powers have been using major international institutions for their own ends for years. Why shouldn’t the other guys use it too?
Well first off 5000 people suddenly turning up and deciding to be something other than Falkland Islanders might be regarded as…….erm…..whats the term? Oh yes, invaders. If on the other hand they turned up and adhered to the Falkland Islands constitution that might be a different matter.
As to the second point. I don’t know Garry, you’d argue black was white if it scored you a few points. 😀

The whole thing about the Falklands/Malvinas is VERY debateable, King Jester even this:
Its more like this: “you took that 50p coin out of my pocket, give it back!
…..is debateable. I really don’t want this to become a slanging match and please, as Jester says, no flag waving but I have done a bit of Googling and neither claim is very clear cut.

and in Spanish:

The following article boils down to one irreconcileable truth. Argentina has a LOT of bridge building to do in order to convince the islanders:

Here is another point of view:

This one tells us a little about Luis Vernet:

In essence no claim is clear cut, Argentina’s appears to be no stronger than anybody elses but I can tell you this. If the islanders said tomorrow that they wanted to become an Argentine dependancy the British government would be celebrating in the streets. The truth though is that this is not going to happen any time soon.
What I want to know most of all is how is Argentina going to make good on their claim, bearing in mind that they have enshrined a peaceful resolution of the issue into law? What are their intentions for the islanders? How can they be made Argentine if they don’t want to be? What will happen to them if/when Argentina gets what she wants? Will they be shipped off the Old Blighty lock stock and barrel or will they be assimilated?
Their wishes must be upheld, they cannot/must not be overridden by political ambition and most of all there must not be another war.

Any chance that King Jester could be elected to the Argentine parliament to inject a bit of wisdom to said establishment??
HEAR HEAR!!!!

FA sometimes you really scare me.
Phil
Just as crap and arrogant as any other magazine commercial for combat aircraft.
Both the typhoon and the Rafale are being pushed hard, so far the Typhoon has one export order but the Rafale seems to be coming higher in international competitions.
I think for those countrys that can afford it, of which there are few, there is a place for both a Rafale type aircraft and the JSF.Ps, my national pride should have me defending the Typhoon to the end, but I like the Rafale.
’tis indeed a good looking bird.
Phil 🙂
Now I get your point. Sorry, I wasn’t paying enough attention and yes I agree.
Phil
1- Ok, thanks. I assume this hole has been filled by now 😀
2- it’s you who have started the comparison between the rafale F1 and the F-8, not me.
Now you, you bring the SHar and the F-18 on the table… fine, but the rafale M F1 is still far more powerfull and has far more range than the SHar : 8 mica + 3*2000 L fuel tanks…this is only a dream for a SHAr.
The F/A-18C is closer in AA, but whether you like it or not, the rafale M has a more modern radar and small RCS.
Yes, the curent rafale M F1 are single role..but at least they are in service since 2001-2002 unlike the “single role” eurofighter T1 which has just received (not sure) her clearance to use the AIM-120B.3-
I’m sorry for that be it is not Dassault’s fault. Wake up ! the eurofighter team has twice more test aircrafts, twice more money, twice more engineers but they are still 3 years behind the small rafale team which also has to make carrier trials…
Well, if you say so…
My bad, I had forgoten that Singapore had kicked the rafale out of the contest because its ESA radar was inferior to the mechanical captor.Well, yes, I’m French :p
What about you ? Are you British or an incurable optimist ? 😀
Told ya.
Phil 🙂
Jacko. Mate. I’m not going to sit here and claim that the Rafale is a better plane than the Typhoon. Personally I think the Rafale/Typhoon was a duplicated effort, the two types are too close in capability to chose one from the other. Unless of course we take our own nationalities into account in which case I chose the Typhoon, strange really since it is in essence a true European jet and I am a Euro sceptic. Of course it has some benefits but the Rafale has others. Price-wise, I can find no hard evidence anywhere that the Rafale is cheaper than the Typhoon.
My point is that your thread, though well researched and written, could be more objective. Getting your point across on these boards is a difficult thing to do without upsetting somebody and causing a slanging match. I guarantee that every argument you put can and will be countered and you in turn will counter that ad infinitum. The Rafale is as good a jet as the Typhoon, thats all I wanted to say.
Phil
Britain and Argentina had always been close upto that point, I hate what happened as do most others I expect.
Phil
Thanks for that Jester I had wondered what had happened to Galtieri. The tragic thing about all of this is that if he had not forced the issue in ’82, the islanders might be more pre-desposed to the idea of Argentine rule (if not total duristiction) as of about now. Post 1982? No, I can’t ever see them agreeing to it and if they say no, that decision must be upheld.
Phil 🙂
wgat an idiot
politicians, why can’t we sink them???
We’d probably be indited if we did. 😉
Phil 🙂
I agree with DJJs comment about the Tranche 3 Typhoons, I can see them being signed for but only as a replacement for the Tornado GR4. I can see them all as two seaters, possibly with some airframe modifications and missionised for the primary strike/attack role. It makes a lot of sense.
Phil
Damn it all I wish they would see sense and retrofit the Blue Vixens to the new Harrier IIs. They would have to pay for system integration but the materials are all in place and ready to make the move. Better still, don’t retire the SHARs until there is a viable replacement. I know. That would be asking far too much.
