Similar to old shape, Bmused55 and yourself, but perhaps without the…. ahem… ‘boyish enthusiasm’ of the former.

    Are you disappointed now? :diablo:

    😀

    Not disapointed at all sir.

I am sorry. My question was directed toward ‘Grey Area’.

Okay. Fair enough. The way I see it the issue is one of self determination. The Falkland Islanders have decided that they wish to remain a British dependant territory and the UK has accepted this along with the responsibilities that go with it. This includes defence, preferably deterrent but up to and including the use of force and the inevitable loss of life that would go with it. I can’t see anything more serious than that though maybe you have other ideas.

So instead of leading others into revealing their opinions, how about we hear yours?

Good Lord, I am learning geography again. Never thought the Europe would raise a claim for Antartica

Though I have not researched on this topic well and is jumping into a conclusion, I believe Falkland may have everythig to do with what Paul has shown and the Exclusive economic zones and the claim for Antartica based on continental shelf/reef.

Check out this world map too, it seems to show the continental connects too http://www.printableworldmap.org/printable-world-map-political-wiki.jpg

Golly! Is that a map of the world? Well anyway thanks for the input now I know where everything is.

You do know also I assume, that Argentina has laid claims to the entire River Plate basin in the past? Including Urgauay, Parguay, Bolivia, large tracts of southern Brazil and the whole of Chile except the area of the Atacama desert? It matters not one jot about the continental shelf or the proximity of certain territories to others. Proximity cannot be used to justify a territorial claim.

I think we are getting ahead of ourselves. According to that map Paul, we are talking about totally different issues. It doesn’t cover the Falkland Islands.

I asked a straightforward question because I was interested in the answer.

If you don’t want to answer it that’s your prerogative, and fair enough. 🙂

I am sorry but I have to disagree. The question was leading, it was not straight forward and neither would be the answer.

At the end, the true is that only England is talking about war, to justify political measures, as being the islands and area in dispute, recognized by the UN, they cannot exploit their natural resources like oil and gas, without an arrangemente with Argentina.

Argentina is talking about haranguing vessels in, whatever Argentina wants to call it, international waters. That would be an act of piracy so how would you deal with it if Argentine vessels were impeded in international waters off the UK? Would you be outraged about it?

You have to admit Grey that your question is leading and you do not stipulate the circumstances upon which we should stop defending the Falkland Islanders from Argentinean aggression.

But by that logic doesn’t all of Tierra Del Fuego ‘belong’ to Chile?

    Moggy

My point exactly. I’ve said it time and again, Uraguay is right next door to Argentina and although Argentina has claimed their land before, along with every other neighbour, Uraguay does not belong to Argentina. The Faroe Islands are closer to the UK (or maybe Iceland) but they do not belong to the UK or Iceland. You cannot make territorial claims based on proximity.
