John, what You say about this?
it’s fragment of Technical Memorandum No. WS.1065
APPENDIX 2 ARMAMENT BEING FITTED TO AIR FORCE HELICOPTERS
1 Whirlwind Mk.10
(a) Four Nord SS-11 missiles,
(b) One 20 mm Hispano cannon mounted either as a fixed or free gun.
NOTE: The cannon may bo replaced by either two 7.62 mm machine guns or four 2 inch, 7-tube rocket launchers.
And this:
FLIGHT International, 1 November 1962 “Whirlwind Squadron’s Role
Army Close Support” By Humphrey Wynn. “… operational activities, such as airlifting supplies for the Army: casualty evacuation; missile- and gun-firing; minelaying; training parachute troops; assisting flood victims; spraying mosquito-ridden ground; and carrying VIPs…”
Full Aircraft Establishment = 18 a/c per carrier with 6 in reserve (FIR)
It’s very probable, thanks
Apparently you didn’t find it helpful. Did you follow it through?
It was first what I did
Gentlemen!
This is extract from archive’s case:
“…4. the number of aircraft that will require modification is as follows:-
Wessex/Whirlwind
18 F.A.E.+6 F.I.R. in each of 2 Commando Carriers = 48
3 T.A.E. for Commando O.F.S. training = 3
P.531
2 F.A.E.+1 F.I.R in carrier East of Suez = 3…”
Exsample dated july 1961. I think that google’s interpretation not suitable for this abbreviation
Thanks Cap, very informative answer. Have You another one?
I remember the Whirlwinds carrying (not routinely) and using SS11 in Borneo (Kuching) during 65/66. I seem to recall that parachutes draped on a mountainside were used as targets.
Thanks,it’s new for me. What were used as target expect parachutes?
…”providing assistance to a terrorist”…
Very interesting. How details of armament installation for old British military helicopters from 1960th in my future article (if I write it) can be assistance to a terrorist? I think that it assistance to a modeller…
I agree. The Skeeter was never armed and I’ve never seen pictures of the British army Sioux carrying a GPMG either.
Try the Helicopter Museum as they do have info in the archive on the Whirlwind SS11 installation.
I seen pictures of the RM commando Sioux carrying GPMG – http://www.flyingmarines.com/Enlarged_pictures/Shag.htm
I remember seeing the SS11 and GPMG mounts in the Whirlwind (Series 3 HAR10) Vol 3 – Parts Catalogue.
It’s very interesting for me. And no, I have not this. Where can I find it?
Gentlemen!
I’m sorry! Today I’m not so sure. It was report from early 1960th. The report mentioned to the helicopter section which includes helicopters Allouette with SS11 ATGM and Skeeter with Browning MG. But I can’t find this report and confirm
…The Skeeter was never armed…
And yes, it was… If I understand correctly…
Do you have any evidence for an armed Skeeter?
I can find no evidence of such a beast being tested at A&AEE Boscombe Down.
From what I know of the Skeeter it struggled to fly with two crew and the Tank radio the army insisted in putting in it let alone aditional armament.
Yes, I have, but tomorrow, ok? 🙂
I asked both few month ago. They could not help me. My question about armed Skeeter causes confusion 🙂 (Rightly said?)
Later I will make another attempt
Westland Sioux’s GPMG installation and Westland Whirlwind’s GPMG and SS-11 ATGM inst.
Museum at Middle Wallop? Is it Army flying museum? My first attempt was unsuccessful.
Thank You!
A few months ago Mr. Elliot was helpful to me too.
