The Firefly 1 origianally was from HMS Venerable ,but transfered to HMS Indefatigable for its visit to N.Z in 1945.
The information was obtained from the book ‘Spitfire The New Zealand Story’ by Gerald S Morris (page 241)
Its quite a good book.Full of many pictures ,facts and figures that we all cant get enough of !The book mainly deals with 485 NZ Spitfire SQN aircraft, and also the Kiwi conection with a most famous aircraft.
Click on the link for an interesting interview with a former 485 SQN pilot in action over the beaches during D-Day.

The Spitfire was gifted to New Zealand .It came from the carrier Theseus. It was then given to the RNZAFand used as an instructional airframe, without serial number .Though its British number was supposidly SW853. The aircraft was broken up very early 1950’s

Dave, the red stars probably denote the aircraft shot down by the pilot, although why the are represented as stars and not swastikas ,somebody else could answer that.I did not see the news article but saw some shorts later in the evening.Looks good doesnt it!?

Does anyone know of any C-47’s still flying today, that participated in the D-Day airborne invasion or flew in the Market Garden parachute drop in the second world war? Would be very interested in finding out!!

I think the only time F-4 Phantoms were here was in July 1977 at Ohakea.I dont think the USAF left any bits behind.Probably a tail fin or rudder component from a A-4 Skyhawk I think.

Harvard 66 ZK-ENE is now painted in a USN colour scheme and based at Wanaka. The aircraft was repainted and refubished after a accident at Ardmore in 1990/1 ?
