Do you have a link to a class / sub description? Would be much appreciated.

Relax, there’s none for now, it’s a test sub, singleton. Modified Kilo, some 500 tons larger.

Hi Snake65 , couple of quick questions

1 ) What is the fascination of RuN to build large displacement SSN , like the nearly 12000 T Akula2 or the ~ 11000 T Yasen , Even in US the Seawolf has been criticized for its large size.

2 ) What about the plans to build smaller ~ 5000 – 6000 Tons submarine , this is something future RN and French SSN force of SSN would be like.

3 ) Are there any figures for future SSN and SSBN force the RuN would like to keep , ex RuN Admiral have quote figures of 50 SSN and 15 SSBN ?

What about maintaining number of SSK force ?

4 ) Are there any plans to overhaul newer Victor 3 SSN ? since these are very capable SSN as good as American improved LA class SSN.

    1) Keeping to double hull standard

    2) Nothing definite. Malakhit and Lazurit may work on it but nothing has surfaced yet.

    3) 8 boomers of 955 class is the only definite number I have. 885 may be too expensive to replace both 949 and 971, so this is where the small SSN may enter.

    4) 20 SSKs was the publicly announced figure IIRC

    5) If Victors will still be around for overhaul (which I doubt), priority is for owerhaul of 945 and 971.

It’s worth to mention that Russian versions of Glavkom’s speech does not specify the range of cruise missiles, it’s just said that Severodvinsk will be the first true multipurpose sub which will be able to engage surface, underwater and land targets and that cruise missiles are reday and tested and will be officially accepted together with the sub. Russian version also gives general dimensions for both 955 and 885, they are the same for 955 as stated during launch, so i’m going to believe waht he says on 885 as well:
    displacement surfaced — 9 500 tons, submerged — 11 800 tons. Length — 120 м, beam — 15 м, draught — 10 м. Submerged speed — 31 knot. Crew — 85. Autonomous cruise — 100 days, dive depth — 600 м.
But,according to a source from Sevmash, launch is still at least a year from now. By the way, it’s her 15th anniversary of build, although she has been rebuilt twice alreday on the slip, current version originates from 2003, so her current designatio may be something like Project 08852. 😉

Besides Nerpa are there any new Akula 2 underconstruction for the RuN , the Nerpa apparently will be leased to IN.

Unconfirmed information on lease of 971 to India says, that India payed for finishing of 2 boats at Amur SSZ. Nerpa is builder’s #518, the second is unnamed #519. Allegedly the second one was 42% ready in 2002. The problem is the same as with Gorshkov – Indian money has been enough only to barely finish Nerpa, the second boat has been laying neglected.
Other unfinished Akula boats – #520 and #521 at Amur SSZ and K-333 and K-337 at Severodvinsk have been used for construction of Project 955 boats.

The current shipbuilding is just a desperate try to salvage as many of military shipbuilding capability as possible. So, domestic financed efforts are reserved for SSBNs first, SSNs second, leaving surface ship building to export contracts. Sad, but inevitable. Situation may change if oil dollars keep pouring in, but so many has been lost, especially in skill and brains…

Upon completion of its modernization, Kara class cruiser OCHAKOV may become flagship of the Black Sea Fleet.

    http://www.nr2.ru/crimea/183017.html

Snake65, do you know details of its modernization?

Well, it certainly will have acommodations for flagship, as it’s hangar space will be turned into area for admiral staff. Helipad will be still there, though. It will get latest version of Kinzhal (with missiles and FCS radar from Tor M2), I’m not sure whether it’s going to have Kortik-M, Palma or Gibka. May have 8 Urans as SSM.Certainly minimum ASubW, Paket-NK perhaps. It’s going to be more of a flagship or command ship, than a cruiser. I’d like to get more info on it’s combat command system.
Anyway, modernization is going at a quite leisurely pace…

No plans to upgrade Oscars, Russia even decided not to finish Belgorod to replace lost Kursk (it’s around 70% ready). Two more Typhoons MAY get upgraded to carry Bulava, no final decisions made, but at least breaking up of them has been postponed.
It’s quite strange, only 6 Brahmos. 22350 has the universal 3S14 launcher (8 cells) which can launch Kalibr (Club) as well as Yakhont/Onyx/Brahmos. I just don’t get it… 3M54 missile has a supersonic second stage.

Huh ? what makes you feel I was being sarcastic , since you had mentioned the upgrade will be similar to what Gepard has I just wanted to know more on that.

Any reasons why Sierra II has a blunt sail , its very interesting , whatever they achieve with that will be at the cost of drag

They positioned launchers for sonar decoys there, in OscarII as well, AFAIK. Nevertheless, Navy realized pretty soon about the additional drag and 945AB would have had more streamlined sail, similar to 971.

Thanks Snake65 , Can you be more descriptive what do you mean by same equipment as Gepard.

For the uninitiated can you just let us know the equipment that Gepard has compared to previous Akula which makes it unique among Akula class.

    Thanks
    Austin

No need to be sarcastic, Austin. There’s not that much “brand new” items, more like factory upgrades. You’ve already posted about replacement of powerplant, meaning more silencing incorporated. New comm equipment has been installed, latest SOKS. Mind you, I haven’t been on board.
Gepard was finished at least 10 years later than other Akulas, naturally it benefitted from design work done for Borei and Severodvinsk. The most visible is the lack of teardrop fairing.

You can say that Akula is a cheaper (steel hull) version of Sierra (titanium hull). Otherwise the boats are almost the same. Regarding upgrade – she now has the same equipment as Gepard. One Sierra1 and 2 Sierra2 should be operational now

Two pics of today from Kaliningrad – repainted Neustrashimy and TUMAN (seems they are going to build it after all) and almost finished Jaroslav Mudry (the crew will start to take it over in June). Bad news for India if Yantar is going to build Tuman:diablo:

How can you be so sure it’s not Ka-31?

    The front looks very similar.

Cause it was not there during exercise
