The HTP arguement fits the facts. A torpedo attack does not. If the kursk heard a torpedo coming they’d have fired decoys. Also why would the torpedo hit it in the nose? There is no noise making gear in the nose. If an active sonar was used for guidance by the torpedo then a more central hit would be much more likely, while a passive torpedo would more likely have hit the rear of the vessel. The Oscar II class subs have water and other more secret materials in the spaces between the inner and outer hulls to prevent anything but the largest shaped charge warhead from doing too much damage. Remember this gap is wide enough to fit two Granits side by side…

The concept in itself really is an earlier one – that of Projekt 1153 Oryol CVN(if I’m right on the number), which was concepted in late sixties as CATOBAR only. Later it went through Kievs and Kuznecovs to Ulyanovsk. But the picture SOC mailed seems to be a new concept of what Russians are tentatively speaking as future CV after 2020.
