Will she get a new set of boilers and engines, or will she get an entirely different powerplant (e.g. gas turbines)

The article said she will get the same set of boilers and engines after capital repairs.

According to Interfax of 11 April, all weapons, boilers and engines have been removed from Gorshkov and it is expected, that in Autumn 2005 she will be moved to open basin for docking operations (whetever that means).

it is also extremely unlikely that the missile on show is some sort of AShM.

the nose isnt sharp enough to make it an efficient supersonic weapon. but there is just plainly no need for a subsonic missile to be that huge, as subsonic flight doesnt burn nearly as much fuel as supersonic (meaning its extremely unlikely that anyone can manage to obtain realible target info far enough out to exploit the missile’s full potential range), and also because such a lumbering weapon is not going to find it easy to get throw the layer defences of most modern warships. especially since the design doesnt look that inspiring in the manoverability area.

I didn’t mean it’s a LACM, but rather a long-range supersonic AShM, similar to P-700. Haven’t You seen images of P-700 with nosecone over it’s turbojet intake (jetisoned after launch)? The picture is far too unclear for very definite asumptions. My opinion was based mainly on dimensions of 052C launch canisters.

Only the assault version Ka 29 carries missiles (AT-6 Spiral), other armed Helix variants (27/28/32) carry only homing torpedo, torbedo rocket and a fw types of bombs/depthcharges.

Kuznecov (or rather Projekt 1143.5 ) is designed to carry 55 aircraft. Russians deploy only half of her capacity due to financial reasons (Naval Flankers are expensive, you know).

Ka-25 used only anti-sub torpedoes. She was shown with AT-3 Sagger like missiles at one of the air shows in Moscow, but these were dummies. Ka-27 uses anti-sub missiles APR-2 and APR-3 and there is a version of land based Ka-32A7 with two X-35 for protection of 200 mile zone. Ka-29 can carry 4 Shturm anti-tank missiles.

You have to keep in mind, that although similar in appearance, these ships were designed to different operational purposes. Vittorio Veneto besides her role as major AAW/ASW unit, intended to provide SAM cover for ASW ships (and add some helicopters of her own) was also designed as fleet flagship. Her helicopter complement was 9 in wartime and she was able to store only 6 in hangar, but of the light/medium class (AB.212)as opposed to Super Frelons and Ka-25 of the other two.
I’ve never been able to say for sure, which was Jeanne d’Arc primary mission -training ship or helicopter carrier, but at least she was intended to carry 8 Super Frelons in hangar at wartime (in peacetime she carried a mix of 7-8 Alouettes, Lynx and Gazelles and Pumas, though).
Moskva was intended as a mainstay of long range antisubmarine system to encounter US boomers with Polaris missiles. She had a compliment of 14 Ka-25 in hangar, very powerful sonar (for 1960s) and 96 SAMs comparable to Terrier/ Standard. She had powerplant of the same type as Grozny cruisers (Projekt 58) and it was reliable enough during the first part of her life, but the quality of maintenance and mid-life repairs led to her early retirement

According to an interview of Adm. Victor Kravchenko, Chief of Main Staff of Russian Navy, given to Interfax on 19 March, 2005, Russia expects to receive the lead boats of Severodvinsk and Dolgorukiy class in 2006.

dont go bashing the story just because the pic is fake. the NH cruise missile is real and here is a pic of it.

Could this be a pic of the bird which is in the big canisters on 52C?

Russian web-magazine “VPK-Vojenno Promishlennij Kompleks” in February posted an article, claiming, that Vikramad will have a group of 30-34 aircraft in two possible configurations: 21 MiG-29K and 13 Ka-28/31 or 24 MiG-29K and 6 Ka-28/31. Can’t say, how much sense this info makes.

The names of Project 971 replicate the names of WW1 series of Russian subs. Other current attack subs have the names of Russian cities, Severodvinsk is the latest example.
