The latest Tweet from the operators:
Bad news buddies, pilot stuck in traffic so no pilot, no flight. Maybe there is a downside to blue skies and sunshine!
Wyvernfan
She might taxi on Friday at 1800Hrs for pilot training. If she is flying, then somebody knows something that I don’t:D
Well whoever updates your facebook page seems to think they know something. :highly_amused:
I notice the permit to fly isn’t yet renewed. Can you still test fly without a current one or does that need to be sorted first?
Scub that, I just found the other thread! 😀
Any more news on this? Surely must be getting fairly close to first flight by now?
The reason we didn’t go for green/grey is well covered in our thread. I’m sure if someone stumped up the cash for the paint we’d have gone green/grey. However nobody did, so we opted to use the hemp we already had in stock to put her back in the scheme we went to war in.
Trumper I think you’re mistaking our jet for the one at Brunty which ‘The Last Victor Pilot’ aka ‘The Luckiest Victor Passenger’ took for a flip…
I was looking through the repaint thread the other day and you guys have done a great job there. Your Victor looks great in hemp, and I’m sure we’re all thankful you didn’t go mad and decide to paint it pink instead! 😀
At first glance I thought Jaguar, but looking closer it actually appears to be a Soko J-22 Orao.
The flying again in Spring (February) quote was from PK in the local paper a few weeks ago:
Keeping things realistic, I’d like to see the Vulcan, Sea Vixen and Canberra flying in 2013; and all three in formation would be a huge bonus. 😎
I really do prefer those teardrop canopies, much nicer. Just a shame it’s not Griffon powered though.
The Woodford saga relates to how she displayed there this year but somehow only managed that for a select few guests and not the majority who undoubtedly built the item.
It was made clear in one of the newletters around the time as to why they didn’t announce the Woodford flight, which I have reproduced below.
Sadly, we were unable to make any prior announcement of this overflight, because the new owners of Woodford Aerodrome specifically requested us not to, citing concerns about crowds on local roads, and their current sensitivities over planning applications for the site.
So there you have it, although I still expect some will blame VttS for not going against the owners wishes.
Btw, it’s worth signing up for the free newsletters as questions like these often get answered,
This is absolutely no surprise to me at all to be quite honest.
As I’ve thought over the past few weeks, there’s been a lot of debate on the various forums about where it should retire to and not much notice of the impending cash flow problems. With the rate of donations coming in, £400,000 by Xmas was never going to happen, you could see it a mile off.
Whether this latest crisis brings in enough money to carry on only time will tell, but if the winter service isn’t done then the only way 558 will be retiring to Brunty (or wherever) next year is in pieces on the back of a lorry.
Just a suggestion rather than an actual happening..
Should Vulcan XH588 be put into live storage like a number of ex military aircraft?. perhaps to fly every 4 years or so?. around the time of World Cup Football or other major public events/anniversary etc.. By doing this it will preserve the airframe life etc so many others can see her fly further down the line of time and also ease up the frantic collection of funds that always seem to happen.
The problem as I see it is you’ve got to have somewhere to store it and also maintain it. That means the costs of hangarage and engineers to look after it while it’s not flying and VttS simply cannot afford that.
This fund raising seems to overshadow and sideline other projects which could do with the influx of money and the exposure of the projects. The majority of joe public who attend airshows obviously enjoy the delight of the sight n sound of big noisy jets and is a great “feet through the gate” generator but is it at the cost of other important heritage?
There’s no evidence to support any theory that the money the Vulcan gets would go to any other projects. It’s likely that some would filter down, but I suspect the majority would just keep their hand in their pockets.
However, imo if other projects want public money then they need to significantly up their game and get their message out to the wider public.
Never ever going to happen, overhaul them with what, parts bought off eBay?
Even the VttS engineers told me that overhauling the engines could be done most likely in the states, but it would take a very large amount of money to make it happen. Improbable yes, impossible, most definitely not it would seem.
And as for RR sticking their neck out and extending them, again cuckoo land, imagine the scenario, doing a display at XYZ… engine lets go taking out the other, aircraft rolls into the crowd exploding and killing thousands, film shown on every news channel around the world… RR who’s reputation is built on reliability and safety found to have extended the engines past their service life limits…. Facts made public… shares price falls through the floor…
Never going to happen
Nice story.
Who said anything about RR extending the engines? All I said was that the engines are being used with severe imposed limits that are far tighter than it had in military service. They could well be used safely after the current cycles are used up, which I imagine only applies to it flying in the UK anyway.
If the aircraft went abroad, what could RR do if another aviation authority gave permission for the Vulcan to fly? What about Art Nalls Sea Harrier in the states, is that supported by Rolls Royce? You can’t just apply our rules to the ones in other countries.
Hurn -they don’t have usable engines to continue flying abroad and I should imagine the operation of any ex military complex aircraft would be looked at very closely. Lastly its our heritage
If I recall correctly the cycle limit imposed by RR for the engines is severely under what was deemed safe use in service life. Apparently RR erred on the side of extreme caution.
If the Vulcan left the country then who’s to say that the false limits it’s forced to fly under in the UK wont be less severe elsewhere? The engines certainly wont suddenly be unsafe once the cycles imposed by RR in the UK are used up.
Saying that, with enough money the engines could be overhauled, it’s certainly not impossible for a rich enough owner, and if there was a buyer from abroad, then you can bet they’d probably have looked into what options they had to fly it in their own country.
As for heritage, well we have numerous authentic Vulcans in museums and a couple of live ones taxiing already.
Indeed but if you don’t the Vulcan is : scrapped /sold to Russia/ sold to the U.S.A ! to quote some of TVOC’s past gems!
So what if it is sold. I’d actually prefer for it to go abroad if it meant continued flying rather than it being sat on the ground here.
