I would say that the idea is better but I think that Ocean is a better LPH as she can carry Landing Craft on Davits adding capabilty.

I also think it would have been worth keeping even a handful of carriers for Libya type senarios……

I apoligize for that remark its just I know someone who was badly wounded in 1982…..(leg blown off)

I think we should have go for 3/4 30,000-40,000 tonne carriers instead as it would have been more flexable 🙂

Jonesy, I’m not sure if that was an answer to my earlier post, but if that is the case, I guess we are talking about the same thing. What the ARA called for, is a couple of CATOBAR ships large enough to acomodate a full squadron of twin jets, 12 heavy support fixed wing, and 12 midsized helos.

The configuration and size are already selected: CATOBAR, 3x launchers, 200m angled deck, ~260/280m length overall, ~8/9m draught, ~58/64m wide, ~36k/45k tons full.

The CVW has to fit in that ship, not the other way round.

About the brazilians, why do you call for naval flankers? They have little to non chance at all of ever serving the brazialn armed forces, even less the marinha. The jets for the suppossed R13 and R14 will be either Rhinos or Rafales, whichever wins the long overdue FX “contest”.

TBH The moment the Argies launch even one of these you can expect at least one more CVF 😛

I think Gripen would be enough for CVF as I can’t see us needing more than that!!!

I also think that we do need to role this ships not as fleet or attack carriers but as what I call CAH….Carrier Attack and Helicopter where the vessel can be reroled in a couple of hours for either helos, Fast jets or a mix…..

Llanbeder was and IIRC Sleap was slated in a war for A-10.

Add to that the fact that in a war scenario [b]ANY[/] any Airbase would have been available if needed.

    Many Thanks

Mistral good looking – goes to show it takes all sorts i personally think the French should be thanked for building the mistral as it stops the Daring being the ugliest thing afloat.

I love the Daring Class’ looks.

Why would you put helicopters at risk with so many manpads around:confused:
The AC-130 might be a next step, but IMHO, for attack choppers it’s still too early to step in.

Does anybody have info about Libyan air defense installations?

How many SAM sites have been hit?

And how many SAM sites still represent a threat to the Coalition/NATO jets?

IIRC All the fixed sites are down.
