Simpler to use CGI.
Well, the railgun helped save the day vs the deceptacons:rolleyes:
Regarding fly wings…
It was not only the Horten brothers. Jack Northrop was another with XB-35/YB-49 which made several flights. But as some already pointed out, it simply wasn’t feasible in the pre-FBW days.
Yeah, Jack Northrop has to be recognized for his accomplishments. I’ve always been fascinated that the B-2 has the EXACT wingspan as Northrop’s original design.
Re the stealth aspect, it appears that the flying wing has an intrinsic stealth capability attributable to its shape. The USAF actually noted that the Northrop flying wings registered poorly on radar but they never really thought much more about it.
I’m sure it wouldn’t be his livelihood he’d be worried about risking :diablo:
I’m pretty sure in some western intelligence office there are photos and possibly even schematics of the damn thing.. you would think that if they’re doing their jobs they’d have found a way.
Well 2009 is half gone and still no PAK-FA sighting. I’m really hopeful we catch at least a glimpse of a flying jet, preferably in video but pics will suffice.. I have a nagging suspicion though that the Russians will give us a short tantalizing glimpse only to keep us hanging for the next 5 years while they continue their testing and development in secret.:D
To lighten things up a bit….

PS: there are allot of cool photos from Paris Air Show 2009
New Typhoon pilots getting their first ride in the simulator?:diablo:
Captain Munir Redfa, IQAF, defected with his MiG-21F-13 on August 16, 1966 to Israel under the guise of a training mission.
It was an elaborate top secret Mossad operation to get their hands on the most advanced fighter in the Arab air forces. Mossad agents successfully evacuated his extended family to Israel, fleeing religious persecution.
The Israeli Air Force rigorously tested the MiG, piloted by Danny Shapira, against their frontline fighter, the Dassault Mirage IIICJ “Shahak” (Hebrew = sky blazer). They found it to be lighter than the Shahak but it had poor rear visibility.
If an Israeli pilot flew 150 meters behind the MiG-21 and slightly below it, the MiG pilot would never see his enemy.
Yeah, watched the movies starring Murriel Hemmingway and Ben Cross.. only it wasn’t a MG-21 in the movie.. I think they used a Mig-17 or -19. Long time ago..
This was the vision years back. Walrus or something like it may be resurrected one day hopefully.. I like the potential applications for civilian use. Something like a super modern and super safe zeppelin.. make a terrific flying hotel, a true cruise ship of the skies.

Can’t access the list but if it contains the Iraqi aircraft that fled to Iran during GW1 then it must be a pretty long list.:D
But as Al said there is degredation, its never going to be as easy or good as eyeball and daylight so still no. Its possible to dogfight to a certain degree at night but its hard, dangerous and nowhere near daylight fights.
One can only speculate at this point on the quality of the F-35s sensors. In poor visibility and in a WVR fight, it should have the advantage.
I think they are all fine aircrat and can get the job done. The deciding factor will be the intangiible one – which country will India prefer to cozy up to and build a stronger relationship with going into the future? I think this gives the edge to the US.:)
Somehow this story just doesn’t sound right to me.. just a feeling.
Too bad we can’t take a peek iside the CIA or DOD computer systems.. they must have compiled a lot of info even pics of the PAK-FA from their sources in Russia.. then we could have a better idea about the new plane.:)
Raptor is specifically designed to go looking for trouble. Go in wipe out the opponent’s air power and gain ‘air dominance’. Is that a role that the Japanese need to fulfill?
Or do they need a much more defensive aircraft? I guess that I’m saying that of the Japanese do continue to push for F22 then its a indicator that they have changed their concept of how they defend the home islands quite significantly.
Al
You may have a point. I’d read that the JSDF is now considered the equivalent of a Ministry within the japanese government, also recent surveys indicate the public is more willing for the country to take a more active role in the world and if necessary flex its muscles. Perhaps the amendment of the constitution is the next step in the process. A Raptor would fit in nicely with their requirements.
Just speculating.. if the Raptor was eventually allowed to be exported to japan, what block level capability would they be willing to settle for? AIM-120D, AIM-9x for sure., maybe some EA capability. None of the A2G stuffm purely defensive A2A.
