Interesting that the F-105 makes you want to be a naval aviator……considering what a naval F-105 would need to take off let alone land even from the USS Foresatal…..

just maybe if you joined all the carriers in the fleet bow to stern you’d have a runway long enough.

I read where the Specter gunships will standardize on dual 30mm guns.. it seems there’s this very big inventory of 30mm rounds on hand w/c even the A-10 fleet won’t be able to expend..

The article explicitly states that the raptor supercruises at mach 2. Unfortunately, this could just be a misunderstanding on the part of the reporter.

(Sep. 1) — The world’s most advanced warplane has been cloaked in secrecy until now. The F-22 Raptor has been tested in the skies over southern Nevada to prepare for wars of the future. The Raptor pilots say that when that day finally comes, the F-22 will live up to it’s billing as the most dominant warplane ever conceived.

It’s like a young Mike Tyson with wings — the biggest, baddest bully on the block. The F-22 Raptor is already flying higher, faster, farther, and packing more firepower than any fighter plane ever conceived. It is stealthy like an F-117, fast like an F-16, packs a punch like an F-15, but is far superior to all of those, and everything else in the sky.

Major Robert Garland, an F-22 Raptor pilot, says, “This is the big boy, not only on the block but on the entire planet.” Major Garland is in the enviable position of being one of the first Air Force pilots to get behind the controls of the Raptor.

Seven of the warplanes are based at Nellis. Since the first arrived last year, little has been said about how the program is progressing. The base commander gave his okay for a status report, which allowed the people who know the Raptor best to almost gush about its capabilities, even those still loyal to the F-15.

“F-15 was great. The Raptor is better. It’s not just better; it’s a whole new dimension. Once you get to compete with it, fight with it, it just isn’t fair. And that’s the way it should be,” said Major Garland

Nellis officials confirm that during a recent test maneuver over the Nevada desert, the Raptor faced four enemy aircraft, F-15s or F-16s flown by mock aggressors. The Raptor not only took out all four of the others, it took them all out twice without breaking a sweat. The pilots say the F-22 will not only provide total dominance in the air, its technical marvels will allow for total dominance of the entire battle space — air, ground, ocean, whatever.

At 60,000 feet, it flies higher than any other warplane, can zip along at Mach 2 without an afterburner — meaning it’s efficient so it can stay aloft longer. It’s so maneuverable it can fire its missiles while upside down, and it’s so stealthy that opponents will likely never see it coming– until it’s too late.

He says he had the posts deleted on his own call and has not suffered any recriminations, why are you guys making a mountain out of a molehill?

Ironically by doing so, you might cause some media snoop to pick up on this and REALLY land him into hot water.

You’re probably right. Dozer did mention in one of his posts that he had a background in security so he’d be the first to know what line shouldn’t be crossed. Still, the military is not a democracy and he might have been pushing the edges of the envelope in terms of what the USAF is willing to disclose about the Raptor at this time. Anyway, he’s a big boy and can take care of himself.

I get the impression from that thread that the F-22 can indeed supercruise at Mach 2. Wow.

Supercruise at Mach 2 is speculation at this point. Will Dozer, who is a F-22 pilot, be less forthcoming in sharing what they know about the jet for fear of getting into hot water? Will we see toned down Raptor exhibitions in airshows as well? Things appear a bit confused at present and I look forward to see what kind of flying displays the F-22 performs in coming airshows.

Perhaps I should have been more specific and defined the parameters in my original post, my fault. I was really operating on the premise that an army (NVA/VC) needs massive logistical effort to wage a war and this logistical network would appear to be an ideal target in today’s world of advanced systems. If the North’s railroads, bridges, ports etc. were shutdown, how would they supply their army down south? As far as losses, I’d expect far fewer air losses if the new technologies work as advertised and if used with the right tactics. I think the NVA air defense system would take a massive beating in the process. Guerilla warfare would seem to be the only viable option and large scale NVA actions would’nt be feasible. . I could see the South not falling in this scenario. I also don’t see the majority of the South Viet Namese embracing communism, at least not willingly.

If it were fought the same way as it was the first time, the result would have been the same. If the US had invaded North Vietnam in 1966, the war would have been over in months.

I’m thinking of the following scenarios:
    – the air campaign would have been able to severely disrupt the flow of supplies to the VC and NVA in the south (assumes the politicians would allow unrestricted targetting of military infrastructure in NV
    – US air losses would be drastically lower
    – the VC/NVA ability to wage war would be seriously curtailed. At worst, a stalemate and continuing guerilla war but no way they can takeover the south.

From a technical point of view, I see no impediment to developing a Navalized F-22 (no swing wings pls.).. the extra weight of navalizing it poses no problem. GlobalSecurity.org quotes the empty weight of the F-35A as 22,500lbs and the navy F-35C as 24,000lbs for a difference of only 1,500lbs additional.. I think a proportional weight increase to come up with a navalized F-22 won’t be a big problem as the Raptor has engine performance/wing area to spare (let alone future engine performance increases).
Political considerations are a whole different matter and I can only fantasize what it would be like to have a F-22/F-35 combo on carriers. Nothing against the SH but the Raptor/Lighting combination would be unbeatable for the next several decades.. don’t know if we can make the same claim for the SH/Lightning tandem.

I was at Barksdale AFB, LA when they brought back nose art on the B-52s as a morale booster. It was a big hit with the aircrews and support personel who combined to come up with some GREAT artwork, much of it quite raunchy. As a matter of fact, I’ve still got an 8 x 10 of the artwork on my father’s bomber named Lil’ Patches 57-6491. That particular figure was in need of a couple of patches in at least 2 very strategic places.

Everything was going great until the 8th Air Force Commander for some reason brought his wife out to see the “Colorful Artwork” she was hearing so much about. Needless to say, she was not impressed, and shortly after, ‘Lil Patches” got the patches she was needing. After the G models were retired, the less offensive artwork was transfered over to the H Models where it remains to this day.

To answer your question…. the aircrews got away with as much as they could, while they could. The fun only ended when the public complained. Aparently it’s more obscene to show a cartoon breast on the side of a warplane than to see that aircraft loaded up with multi-megaton weapons ready to go at a moment’s notice.

Thanks for the response..enjoyed it greatly. I for one hope that more artwork gets done inthe future.

Only someone who’s cleared for that type of info could give a definitive answer so we all have to be content with tantalizing rumors about the Raptor’s real capabilities.. given all the secrecy and very likely disinformation surrounding the program, I wouldn’t be surprised if it could supercruise at Mach 2.

The splash after the crash was just the pilot hitting the water with his escape chair, I think the parachute just doesn’t open when it doesn’t have a sufficient height, hence the chair just falls back. Or it was the canopy that flew away.

you’re probably right.. either that or one big fish LOL

Do you know if there are any plans to uprate the engines? I’d read several years ago about the F414 getting bumped up to 26,500lbs of thrust but nothing since then.

The VAATE program targets boosting F414 output 20% by 2010. Also, F119 performance on Raptor expected to increase by 10%.

What could replace an A-10? Another A-10?

The A-10 was one of the platforms the F-35 was originally intended to replace, along with the F-16, F-18A/C and Harrier. Granted, they are very different airplanes..

They can afford to cut the F-35s, specially if they proceed with the modernization upgrades on the A-10s.
