Gorgeous finish, colour scheme and ‘badge’ (what’s the right word?) on the nose – many thanks for posting those up, much enjoyed.

‘Soloed’ on one of those, as did many of us ‘old’ Air Cadets.

That’s exciting news for us in Cornwall, not really very well provided with much of interest in the way of classic aircraft.

I reckon I’ll sign up for membership of the Trust.

Will that mean there will be two Shacks at St Mawgan?

8 miles. Poor F/Sgt Copping, what a valiant effort to save himself, and it seems, he thought he knew the best way to go.

What on earth caused him to be down there, what a mystery.

Thank you for the report Quatara, and to the team for finding him.

Under-wing roundels, Dave, I am sure they would have been original, but can’t remember whether they were also on the top surfaces. I should imagine so, wouldn’t have roundels just underneath I’m sure.

Saw on e-Goat that Clevelands was closed by the OIC as the balance of service members to civil fell below the 51% required.

Another image at Aboyne, with thanks to Al for this. It looks like the logo was blue after all, Dave.

That Wills gold-leaf logo is the very thing, although I must admit my memory fails me as to whether it was gold or blue, but gold I think.

The rudder was indeed blue as seen in the ‘Capstan’ image (for which thanks to al stacey). However, I don’t recall the ‘day glow’ stripes on the nose in her early days at Perranporth. Perhaps light blue and white not the best colour scheme for visibility and the day glow stripes were considered expedient.

I hope another image of BZL is on its way which will help with logo positioning, so keep an eye on here and your PM box Dave.

That’s wonderful news, and well done to you and all concerned, fair warms my heart it do.

I have no more images of my own, but found this one on the Vintage Gliding Facebook page, which is unfortunately indistinct and remote, but does show the Wills logo. I readily admit to having no permission to publish this, so I apologise to the owner who I hope may be not upset in view of the purpose.

Hiya Pagen. I lived just a mile up the road from Ventongimps towards the A30 until I was 18. As a kid I was told by my Father, a farmer, that a “Spitfire” crashed in the moor, and that it was ‘still there’ as it had ‘gone down in the mash (marsh)’

Father had heard it in its final dive. Farmer, and Home Guard soldier Mr Mewton (of Marazanvose) also told me that he was posted to guard the site. Another neighbour, farmer Mr George Grigg (now deceased) was working in the adjacent field and was soon on the scene, and attended the 1980’s dig too.

Well, like you, I was all over that moor looking for it; this would have been in the ’60s.

Some years ago I wrote to Flypast magazine and got published a request for information about the Ventongimps Beaufighter crash, before I knew of this forum of course.

A chap whose name I shamefully forget (Mr Andrew perhaps?) kindly contacted me and told me that he was a boy in Ventongimps when it happened and visited the site on his return home from school. He described the scene as one of complete devastation. I think that at least one member of the crew is interred in Illogan cemetary. Please see this wonderful series of 6 tribute videos to the fallen who are interred in Illogan:

Anyway, I duly left the County to try and make a living, and was later told that the Devon aviation archaeology folk had been asked or at least authorised by the Cornwall Trust for Nature Conservation to excavate and remove material that was still causing polution.

Mr Grigg remembered Mr Hood, and described to me the very hard work required to extract the material.

If you are ever up for a walk out through the Moor again I’d be glad to join you.

I wonder if Mr Hood would please consider telling us a little of the outcome of his excavation, in so far as what was recovered, and whether it is still in his collection?

Fallen from grace, a victim of his own personality cult. He’ll be back I think.

A man with the energy of Zahi Hawass is needed, although I am sure he is not without influence and would be able to encourage a recovery, perhaps his interest is in antiquities and not the remains of modern war.
