I am one of the Organisers of the Moth Rally and part of the Executive that took the decision to cease, a decision which was taken well before the Dec 2015 date of the letter. The proposed CAA charges were just a rumour at that time, the consultation only coming out on Feb 1st this year, and was not even considered in the process. The air display of the Moth Rally is just a small part, we could have simply not had an air display and carried on and not been affected by the proposed new charges.
People need to take a reality check. Some of the events now being trumpeted as being cancelled ‘because of the new charges’ were in fact doubtful for other reasons long before the consultation came out. I was at the BADA Symposium this week and heard first hand the reasons for the proposed new charges. We might not like it but the reasons are there. The consultation ends on Feb 29th, people need to respond to the consultation with reasoned argument. Or you could sign a pointless online petition.
or The deH Club Moth Rally at Woburn……….???
The decision to cease Moth Rallies at Woburn was made in December for commercial reasons and has nothing to do with the CAA’s proposed increase in charges.
AAIB are anxious to trace more photos of the accident to the DH 53, particularly of the last few seconds. If you were there, or know of people who were there and have any would you please contact the AAIB. Details on their website.

Same here but seems to be OK now. The Club are aware of the problem.
I think you are all probably right, have a look at the pics here http://www.airfieldinformationexchange.org/community/showthread.php?454-Henlow
🙂
Thanks chaps.
I don’t think the hangars are right for Henlow. I am an occasionally visitor there and flew there three weeks ago, with Des Penrose as it happens. All the hangars face one another, there isn’t a nice neat line as in the video. And a Canberra at Henlow on grass?
May the de Havilland Moth Club publish one or two of these pics in their magazine The Moth please? Full credit will be given, let me have your real name if it isn’t Arthur Pewtey . . . . 😉
Amazing co-incidence. My first ever flight in an aeroplane was G-ACEJ Fox Moth Southport beach about 1959. And it’s still flying, and I’m still going, just! 😀
dH Moth Club Charity Weekend
Mike J
Thanks for the plug. The dHMC Charity Weekend is indeed 12/13 June at Old Warden. The charge this year is £55 but all monies raised go to, predomiently, children’s medical charities but others like Shuttleworth also benefit.
DGH
We usually have a Chipmunk but not sure what the line up is this year yet.
Yes, I’m with Moggy. More of Suzannah showing more leg!!
Wheeling and dealing by the person organising the air display. It became a bit of a ‘cult’ thing, particularly amongst the US participants, that they were flying at the ‘Clophill Village Fete and Dog Show.’
I use to provide the ‘ATC’ at Clophill but only in the 90s. I claim to be the only person to have worked a B52 on UHF from a village hall roof!! 😀 😀 😀
Hi Snapper
Nice to meet you on Sunday, sorry we were not a bit more chatty but as you saw we were recovering from the mishap. On Sunday, the wind suddenly increased markedly which is when the mishap occurred and although we tried to start again we had to give it up soon afterwards. Some of the aircraft were unable to get away until late into the evening because of the wind.
I don’t suppose you want to hear this, but we had a great day on Saturday with almost 100 people flown!
As for the emergency services, there is a Pre-Determined Attendance, so you get what they send you. The airfield was licenced because of flying fare-paying passengers and standard procedures were followed. No one was hurt, which is the main thing. The Tiger is still to be looked at.
The dHMC Moth Rally is at Woburn Abbey 16/17 August, although we will not be doing charity rides, let me know if you are able to make it.
Brilliant picture of Mrs S and Whipper! 😀
A sight I shall never forget occurred when I was driving over the A69 (I think). Fast road and I wasn’t hanging around in my company BMW (alas, no more. . .) and I saw another car in my rear view mirror catching me rapidly. However, I had to do a double take as also in my mirror were four smoke trails! A C130 was coming up the valley low level! I let it win. :D:D:D
ATC units at airfields were not adverse to asking interesting aircraft to give the airfield a fly-by if the were passing close by. One request to a Vulcan at Luton resulted in it treating the tower to a plan view as it passed by on its wing tip! Took a bit of explaining to the airfield management when the noise complaints started to roll in. They never did believe ‘secret mission’! 😀
The Sally B looked good as it came up our 36 grass runway one day, climbing away over the supermarket at the end. And the F-4 was good too! 😉
Sadly we daren’t do it these days. . . . 🙁
