A really wacky thought is … If there was a Yes vote, Prestwick becomes a joint commercial and military field perhaps in the style so US Regional airports that are also Air National Guard bases. It could formalise Prestwick as a favoured (which it seems to be already) refuelling or night stop for foreign airforces jumping the Atlantic.

I can see the 609 in use as an executive transport.

I believe this was the original intention, operating from city centre heliports but with the range and speed of an airport based fixed wing corporate taxi.

Had the USN been looking to replace its Goshawks, then I could see where a navalised version of the Scorpion, where the internal bay could be loaded with black boxes relating to different mission profiles.

But with the T-45As being upgraded to T-45C, that doesn’t really make sense of this aircraft either.

A stand-off platform such as was demonstrated by the Nimrod MRA4 as Tempest414 suggests would be a “nice to have” item, but does it actually NEED such an aircraft No.

THere are areas within the UK Defence structure that are in much more Need

The Dauphins overflew my house at lunchtime today (Thursday), unusual to see one as I’m under the flightpath for EDI, but two in a trail formation about 20 seconds apart screamed military.

Sadly workload down here means that a trip won’t happen this time. On the plus side though a longer better planned return trip could be in the offing.

    I’ll get there yet.

Going to be working out of Derby next week.

Hoping that I can make a visit whilst within reaching distance.

Realistically how much time would I need for a good look around?

Much as I love the sight -it needs a significant input of money for a large ‘superhangar’ to house the likes of the Vulcan and Comet. For a museum that represents Scottish aviation history it could do far better.

Perhaps a modern interpretation of an airship hanger as this would be in keeping with East Fortunes pre WW2 past. The trouble as always is that they would have to buy land as well as planning and building costs.

They probably need to bolster the NATO strategic airlift fleet at Papa, Hungary.

NATO secretary Anders Rasmussen just recently provided an analysis of NATO European capabilities (i.e. excludes US resources) and there was not a single spot where capability was adequate and in most cases was completely inadequate.

Strategic transport was one of these areas.

The problem with the use terms like “adequate” or “inadequate” is that you also have to give a context.

For a given capability, is there something that can do it – Yes
Is there numbers that can do it over a period of time – yes
Does that make it adequate or inadequate??

Given 10 more of something would it improve the capability – depends on the scenario
given 10 more can the period of time be extended – depends on the scenario

Does having 10 more make it more adequate ??

The old saying – lies, damn lies and statistics – holds as true as ever.

East Fortune’s Mig 15 as listed on Euro demobbed is actually a licence build. It’s correctly identified as an Letov S-103
Likewise it’s 2 seat cockpit section (held in deep store) isn’t a true Mig either.

As a Child of the 70s the TSR2 was something of a Shhh don’t mention it, especially at the time when I recall the NimrodAEW being shut down.

So please respect a genuine question regarding the type.

What sort of weapons load would it likely have carried, the mega thin wing doesn’t look as though it would take much underslung? Where the intakes are, was there an internal carriage capability and again what types likely would fit ?

    Thanks.

When Concorde arrived, East Fortune really became Concorde and other aircraft, rather than the well thought out and laid out museum, it was previously.

Gone went the display stands detailing early attempts at flight, before moving onto actual aircraft themselves, the Sail planes and hang gliders that were suspended from the roof, the Puss Moth and Tiger Moth diorama etc from Hanger 4. Gone went the Space display from Hanger 1 in order to make room for the Spitfire and Me 163 Komet to come over from Hanger 4.

Hanger 2 was always aircraft just line up, and Hanger 3 was always the restoration hanger, so it’s great that these are open full time now, but they have become viewable storage area, as there has been that much squeezed into them. Hanger 3 just looks a mess with the Viscount fuselage against one back wall, bits of Nimrod that escaped then it was broken up, and the Beau laid out awaiting restoration – to begin who knows when.
And on the other wall with no identification at all – it’s not even mentioned on the website any more – was the Space display material including a Blue Streak Ballistic Missile.

It’s one thing refurbishing the smaller buildings, and the Parachute store, looks good if only to walk in, spend 30 seconds taking a photo and then walking back out again as there is only the audio recording playing in the building itself. Fantastic Flight is fine if you have kids, and I understand any museum has have educational elements, and the Fortunes of war whilst well laid does little more than replace the cinema room from Hanger 4 that’s now dedicated to films about Concorde.

Of the what other buildings can be refurbed and to what extent, there isn’t any that will increase the aircraft display space. Nowhere for the 1 1/2 Stutter or Bolingbroke to be shown in their glory, or even show of the Nimrod section that when I was there last was stuck in beside the civil aircraft in Hanger 2 rather than be a centre piece of the military display in Hanger 1.
