Wasn’t there a US program to develop a vary large transport based on an airship?

Lockheed have a prototype if that’s the correct terminology

I think there is Video on the internet as well.

I think this is what you looking for…

    19/6/09 – 25/6/09 Exercise HAWK OWL
    LFAs 12,13,14 and 16.
Exercise HAWK OWL is the final phase of the Rotary Wing Operational Evaluation and Tactics Unit’s helicopter tactics course and will involve up to 7 helicopters. Aircraft will be based at RAF Leuchars, and will operate in Southern Scotland in support of ground troops. All flying will take place during the day.

Agree with the first paragraph entirely. As you’ve said, the Merlin is a good direct Seaking replacement, so why not replace the SAR Seakings with Merlins too? If we are going to order a Puma replacement, I think the AW149 is good, but i don’t think we should get more AW139’s for any role unless they are significantly cheaper otherwise we are just going back a generation for little reason.

The Coast Guard is a civilian organisation that uses private contractors to operate it’s fleet of helicopters. There currently isn’t such an operator in the UK with Merlin experience.
If the Coast Guard was to take over the full SAR coverage of the UK, then not only would they need to find pilots, but also get them all trained (at what cost) to the Merlin.

Can’t argue with some of the above…

Obi Wan Russell: The hybrid Merlin as described is the very obvious RM Seaking replacement.
Likewise a Merlin of some description is probably the most cost effective (though perhaps not ideal) solution for MASC as well.

In addition to more Merlins, I do think however that a direct replacement for the Puma is needed. The MOD or more precisely the Government currently have 4 AW139s on thier books, 1 at RAF Valley for SAR training with the other 3 with the Coast Guard on the South Coast. (Yes I know civvy operated).
Perhaps an order for AW 149s as a direct replacement for the Puma along with additional/follow-on orders (all under the umbrella of the coast Guard) for AW139s as SAR Sea king replacements, maybe even SAR versions of the AW149 as a longer range version for places such as Sumbrough or Stornaway.
Combining AW139 and AW149 orders would hopefully bring down the unit cost, and with a centralised maintenance “tail” that would be funded not just by the MOD but the CoastGuard agency as well.

Out of curiosity anyone have any ideas of the numbers of aircraft actually being referred to here?

    RAF Pumas
    RM Sea kings

And what split between Merlin/AW149/AnOther would likely make up the replacements. As much as I’d like to see 1:1 financially I can’t see it happening even though the need is very clear.

The MOD suggests a total of 62 FLynx/Wildcat/AW159 split between Army and Navy.

Should that number be increased as a part measure to the medium lift requirement as well?

While the 149 is probably an ideal, the problem as a military type is still a “paper” aircraft.

The MOD has easy access to the AW139 which appears to be the civilian version with the CoastGuard and also the SAR training aircraft at RAF Valley.

For the AW149 there is obvious questions..
How quickly can AW149 be built? (there was suggestions of a UK assembly line)
    What Engines would power it?
And perhaps most politically relelvant what price?

As an off-the-shelf, the NH90 does appear to be an easy option, though my own view is that Merlin is a proven success.

This might be more for the webmaster than a Mod.

Could it be an idea to do as another vBulletin forum site that I visit do, and include the sub forums on the front of the forum page, like in the attached image below.

The photographic thread could have Tutorial, Airline and Airshow as sub forums showing.

Similarly with Military with it’s Missile and Naval Aviation sub forums; Commercial with the Trip reports; and Flight Sim with the RC & Models and Screen shots subforums.

That way the casual viewer the to forum front page will see where everything is and possibly see something they might otherwise have not known was covered by this site.
And to members the sub forums would be highlighted to show that there is new content since their last visit.

I thnkk this would take away some of the comments about the airline photos being lost once away from the Commercial section.

Does anyone think it would’ve been better to drop the JSF programme and continue with the F-23 programme?…

Is the F23 going to get on and off either a USMC/Royal Navy flat top?
How about a USN carrier with it’s catapults?

No and that’s why there is a JSF

Been at work all this evening, not long home. Heard it on the radio during the drive back.

Absolutely astonishing, superb flying and landing by the pilots. Also well done to the Cabin crew on the evacuation as well.

The simply fact is that in this day and age, you’d have to design, build, test, weapons check, and get an aircraft into service in less than 6 months for the processors that power the hardware not to be considered obsolete.

I don’t want to be rude, but shouldn’t a pilot make sure his jet will crash out of an inhabited area before bailing out?

That’s if his plane is still controllablel though.

    Nic

The CNN report above makes mention of the University City Highschool being close to the crash site. That makes it about 2-2.5 miles off the end of the longest runway at Mirimar.

I don’t want to speculate on causes but that information alone suggests something on take off or finals (possibly with a problem). Neither of which would leave the pilot many options for finding anywhere clear to point the aircraft.

Well if the rumours in another thread about the MOD contract with the PFI tankers is to be believed, these “Sentry R2” aircraft will either not indulge in a2a refuelling during peace time (as the PFI’s will be drogue only), or additional funds on top of the UK electronics fit is going to have to be found for the probe and plumbing to mirror the E-3D
