Silloth, that brings back memories, little TonyT playing in the sand dunes and staying at the Lido.
Tony the dig was slightly less romantic and the sand not quite so good for sandcastles.
It was the local tip.
Thank you Peter.
This will be our 8th Flying Legends – starting in 2007 we have been coming every year.
I blame Ken Ellis for telling me it was a good idea.
I am still amazed by the people who stop be every year and say “never seen you here before”
Travelling down on Thursday and setting up on Friday so looking forward to saying hello to all the usual suspects over the weekend – irrespective of the weather.
The two 5ACA and the Mk4s all went to an unknown chap at Newark last weekend who wants to try and restore them. Sorry I have no contact details.
Francois – thank you for the note.
All the clocks shown above have new homes – sorry!
I have more or less given up on Smiths clocks – There are few restorers left who will tough them – the unavailability of parts and the divide bwteen watch restorers and clock restorers – neither of whom want to have anything to do with Aircraft Clocks.
The restorers who are interested restrict themselves to the higher value clocks such as Jaeger Le Couture, CDIA and the Hamilton Elgin 37500. There are a couple in US who restore these and sell them on ebay.
The 5ACA – I got the near working one from Sweden. There were a few for sale in Uk about 4 years ago -so there are some around – just a matter of patience..
Sorry I cannot be of further help.
If this is Wellington – with the Dzus and hatch it is likely from the engine area. I cannot see it on any of the images of Wellington with Hercules engines.
I was wondering if anyone has any drawings of the Mk2 Merlin engined Wellington. The longer sloped profile may be more appropriate.
An alternative option – but still classed as aviation art..
My current favourite – as painted onto 117th AHC Hueys in Vietnam – this was painted onto a Huey radio panel.
Original artwork here:
LCM3
Eurostar on Monday was full of North American veterans and families on their way to Normandy.
Not aviation but my 13 year old son and I have been working diligently to get a 1/16 scale RC LCM3 and RC Sherman ready for D-day.
As I will not be back in UK till Friday evening and the shaft couplings only arrived this morning – it will be a few days late before we land our Sherman onto the “beach” of Talkin Tarn on Sunday as our private remembrance.
Thank you Mk12 the big metal instrument holder is just below the gunsight rest and is marked 0-9 so not a mk3 clock.
It is then likely that it had a mk2 on the LHS.
On the clock it is a nice Mk2 Jaeger Le Coultre 8 day RAF clock dated 1937. By itself it is worth in the region of 200 to 250.
As to coming from a specific aircraft – these clocks were ubiquitous and hence were used in most aircraft of that era – but are often called Spitfire Clocks. – even though Hurricane etc would be just as valid.
There was a Mk2 last year being sold as a Dambuster Lancaster clock – from the family… For me unless I had a picture of the clock with a distinctive marking showing it in situ and being removed – it is a leap of faith especially as value being asked was 4 to 5 x market value.
Cannot say that this or the Lanc clock did not come from the stated aircraft – depends on the solidity of the provenance.
Probability is a different parameter.
On the inside shot – the large instrument on the shiny bezel is that a Mk3 clock ? The mk2 was always mounted on the LHS ?
Or you can google transparent acrylic tube
or buy acrylic rod and turn it to size.
Attached pics of all the clocks.
Christoph – I would have loved to have had that piece – but the shipping back to UK would have been fun!!
I managed to fit a Ju88 tail and a 109 Belly Pan in my LR last year. Previously I managed to fit two FW190 landing flaps – but 2.3m of He177 would be a bit of a challenge…
I have sent you a pm.
A Bomb bay door was sold on ebay Germany last week – 2.3m long , 80 cm high and 30 kg – sold for a pitiful 151 Euros…
Edit – found the listing
At Cardiff University there is an archaeology conservation course – I wonder if similar establishments may be interested in a project ?
