    RE: B777.

    But in some books I have only seen ANA mentioned. Did they have a bigger role than others?

    Too right, ANSETT was bleeding internally long before Sept.11, but like Ja said it was a shock – usually is to the public. Has SWISS AIR gone? I thought they were getting the government bail out they needed.

    RE: EgyptAir flight 990

    Some quotes from that flight:

    Tawakalt ala Allah.
    (I rely on God.)

    β€” Gamil El-Batouti, EgyptAir Flight 990 co-pilot, he repeated this phrase nine times while shutting off the Boeing 767’s engines and pushing the jet into a fatal dive, source NTSB, 31 October 1999.

    What’s happening, Gamil? What’s happening?
    What is this? What is this? Did you shut the engines?
    Pull. Pull with me. Pull with me. Pull with me.

    β€” Captain Ahmed Mahmoud El Habashy, EgyptAir flight 990, last words, on returning to the cockpit, source NTSB, 13:50 EST 31 October 1999.

    RE: The Sonic Cruiser

    >This Boeing will only go a bit faster than regular jets.

    The Sonic Cruiser’s cruise speed is quoted at Mach 0.95-98 or about
    612-631 knots. Lets compare this to some of the ‘other’ jets.

    Max. cruise speeds;

    747-300/400 = 507 knts
    737-600/700/800 = 506 knts
    777 = 499 knts

    A320 = 487 knts
    A330 = 500 knts
    A340 = 494 knts
    A380 = 547 knts+

    Il-86 = 512 knts
    Il-96 = 469 knts

    Tu-154 = 504 knts
    Tu-204 = 448 knts

    So, other than the A380, the SC will be up to 100 knts or more faster in cruise at altitude than most existing or serving airliners in future. Over a lengthy trip this will make a difference, not huge, as the diagram points out, perhaps only an hour or two here or there, but faster all the same.

    Virgin Blue routes..in future.

    It won’t be long before Virgin Blue has new Pacific Routes! VB plans to have 50% of the Australian domestic market by 2005-10, and is also looking to expand O/S. I would expect such expansion to start with the local routes such as Indonesia, the Pacific Islands, and New Zealand, and from there who knows?

    Been to KL, had a 4 hour transit there on the way back to Australia a few years ago. I don’t recommend the airport’s fish curry!

    Never got to see it from the outside in the day! Great shot.

    RE: EgyptAir flight 990

    From what I have read on the investigation, or at least the preliminary report, evidence would seem to suggest that there was a fight in the cockpit prior to the crash. I tend to agree with this finding.

    I still reckon that QANTAS should consider a new livery soon, perhaps a red strip across the fuselage linking to the tail or something.
