I think that in high threat littoral environments – all the proposal does is indicate the short commings of a helicopter to stand on patrol (cost effectively in terms of logictics tail and man hours), putting a slow man air vehcile in harms way….

Helicopters are great searching in the wide ocean for submarines, or being under the fighter/missile umberella to carry stuff from ship to ship or ship to shore.

The operational requirements beg the questions – do we need speed, do we need persistance, do we need to intervine and do we have crew to some of these tasks?? if the asnwer is yes – then that must change things.

“the old harrier destroyer” concept??…I don’t think BAE is suggesting that this is a replacement for a CV, or the platform from which a major offensive is to be conducted. It role is littoral – and is more about persistant patrol and control.

Full set of missiles (could include land-SSMs) can be provided, two EH101 provides felxibility around insertion missions and patrol and it is not necessarily intened that 2 helicopters be embarked. As for UCAV’s it is likely that efficient patrol UAV’s can be used, and UCAV’s – in a littoral control theatre is unlikely to require much more than enabling 24 missions to be flown. 4 UCAV’s X 6 missions.

This has no relationship to ‘cold war’ ideas of destroyer sized ships (see book ‘the new capital ship’) having large VSTOL fighters embarked, with only stores and fuel enough for limited missions. BAE approach is much more about being time critical and bringing precison weapons to bear on a particular target if need be, while patroling and controlling the littoral environment.

What jingjang? That is a migs pak-fa fighter proposal [no-cocpit ofcourse]…
the damn chineese are stealing everything!

So how about posting a photo/drawing of the pak-fa concept fighter then?? then we can all see if there is any similarities…

I hope that MiG’s design for a multi-purpose fighter doesn’t look to similar to a UCAV designed for penetrating air-defense systems and ground attack.

    Italian CV Evolution

Attached are some phots and drawings of Italian concepts and G-Garibaldi and cavour. Can any one elaborate on the two Fincantieri designs of the 1970’s – appartently both are about 17,000t.

    Drawing and artist impression

Drawing and artist impression of harrier Carrier for you. VT along with Vickers looked at other designs such as the MAC, versatile carrier (V-VAC) and FLC. Prehaps the V-VAC was the most promising design.

Surely the criteria for the most pointless airforce is one with the most pointless mission ….or fihghting a most pointless war?

I suspect the is a logic to numbering of fighter projects. The only thing I have found and that was in 2000 on the net was this. Speculation…concept Idea don’t know. Don’t care either ….it was also shown with a UCAV version.

I thought it was April the 1st but thats next week….very disappointed with the army and navy forums going, at least their should be a section on stealth or hitech weapons of any type. A lot of technology has cross over these days and to limit peoples thinking/ideas by focusing on aircraft smacks of silo mentality……never a healthy consequence.

The three poster aircraft was a Rolls Royce illustration possibly in conjunction with ‘BAe Kingston’ dating back to the early 1980,s (VFAX I think was mid 1970’s)

    LHP -LPH

    Hi Pometablava

LHP – should read LPH, which interestingly enough is the British Classification -Landing Platform Helicopter which is very similar to the US classification LHA LHD.

    back to the ‘LHP’ pictures

Top picture is US from Popular Mechanics Oct 1990 ‘Battleforce 2030 one design many missions’ now it discribed a family of such vessels as ‘carrier dock amphibious’, ‘carrier dock logistics’, carrier dock support’….this terminology i was not familiar and classified it as LPH.

Another picture of the proposal can be found in ‘Proceedings’ January 1992 P99.

The following to design concepts should be labeled LPH’s and in that respect are likely to be British concepts. Thats about as much as I can tell you, other than they would have been acquired on a visit to Cranfield University’s library in 1995 or their abouts.

    LHA-R

Hope to see the definitive LHA-R design soon. attached is some LHA-R artrists impressions, the top one seems to be the ‘dual tram’ impression. also for good measure a couple of concepts from the mid-late 1990’s for an LHP.

Thanks maxpain, also to snake65..interesting site, but being in russian and dial-up makes that a long stint at the computer.

An interesting inshore sweeper from Russia…class? I have it down as AK306 built by Tulomashzavod?, but not sure if this is the right designation.
