Ahhh, so it is the whole Soviet way of fighting that is inferior?
Strange. Could you explain how the west fights? do they just send up planes that fly around and use their big powerful radars to find targets themselves, and their super missiles to bring anything down that they aim at?

GCI certainly worked for Britain during the Battle of Britain, but modern western pilots are so super trained they don’t need any support from anyone and can work alone without any support.

Apart from the more agressive model that allows it to go to foreign countries based on airborne assets like AWACS and Hawkeyes and JSTARS etc they are almost identicle. The difference is that the Soviet system was purely defencive and included an entire layered SAM network to defend right up to and including from ICBMs around Moscow.

The Mig-29 early models don’t fit the western model any better than the rediculously expensive Hornets fit the Soviet model. Why do you think that makes the Hornet the better aircraft? The irony is that the Hornet is a multirole aircraft… multirole aircraft are supposed to be cheaper… the hornet isn’t.

“I thought we were discussin the A modell, and being the export variant does not mean they carry less fuel. And the engines were derated yes. Well somehow an engine barely achieving 300 hours before overhaul was not quite efficent to operate in 1991. 9”

The A model migs the Germans operate are called B model export versions of the A model that was used by the Soviets. During those 300 hours they need very little attention at all. The Mig-29 was designed for war, not peace time. While your Hornets are getting a little maintainence the Migs will be in the air. One of the first upgrades the S model upgrade included the capability to carry the R-77… the fact that they decided not to use the R-77 and wait for the R-77M is not important… they could certainly make them if they needed them.

“I think we all know that the early RD-33s were crap. That’s a given. “

They were designed for war… how often have we seen western planes do tailslides? Handling a reverse airflow is not easy and not just any engine can handle that.

“I just put a picture of the only Gary i know”

Haven’t you ever heard of Garry Shandling, or that guy named gary on “WKRP in Cincinatti”. Even Spongebob squarepants’s snail Gary. Do you live in a cave?

“Phazotron confirmed Zhuk-M exports to an unspecified customer.”

The Zhuk-M is used in the Mig-29K2 that you are buying for your new carrier.

Give it up Garry, you are taking this discussion outside of MiG-29SMT vs F-18C, i want to talk about capabilities, not history, air combat models, etc, you’re just putting these variables in to make the MiG-29 more favorable, and i’m talking about the SMT, not the A, B or whatevers.

As for Garryshandling or Spongebob squarepants, I don’t really watch cartoons as often, am I expected to? I live the next closest thing to a cave.. Svalsbard! 😀

(Our F/A-18s are currently not equiped for ground attack, but might slip into this role). There’s a whole thread on the topic further down somewhere….

so what aircraft do you favor for this? I think the Gripen probably might be a more efficient for Swiss needs

I saw the Mirage 4000 many years ago at this French air show called Le Baguette. I tried to get a brochure but everyone kept handing me bread 🙁 🙁

The Rafale is just as likely as the Gripen or the JSF. The EF was rated as the favorite by the NZZ some weeks ago, but it’s too early to tell.
The Rafale is well in the race for sure, so why not combine the ice tests with some marketing and some nice days in the Engiadina.

Well what will the Raffie be replacing if it goes into Swiss air force? they just had a major arms purchase with the formidable F-18D just within 5 years ago.

(But then again you’re excused: there’s no McDo’ in Samaden or anywhere near, so how would you know where it is.):D

we all know of your deprivation from the lack of a global fast food chain in your country. Dont worry, I feel your pain.

And Swiss and the Rafale? Unlikely.

it lack’s the “spine” of the M and other SMT models, so it should be somewaht shorter ranged.. the armament LOOKS impressive.. but who knows. It certainly is a pretty plain. Also, why do russian aircraft tend to have really glossy coats of paint?

Both were fairly well armed for their day with the F-100D carrying four 20-mm cannons and up to four AIM-9 Sidewinders.

The MiG-19 had three 30-mm cannons and in the radar-equipped models the AA-1 Alkali AAM, though I’m not sure how effective this missile really was.

I don’t know if Russian Farmers ever carried IR missiles, but Chinese-built J-6’s have carried AIM-9’s and probably PL-2’s over the years.

The MiG was faster, but the F-100 had a greater range and better load carrying capabilities.

    I guess I’d take the F-100, but it’s a close one.

my juicy friend, how much farther did the F-100 fly?
I think the F-100 would make a great addition to the Pakistani AF btw.
