Generally I would opt for MICA ARH. It is superior even to AIM-120C (Singapore uses Alpha standard only, am I right there?) and the price within the whole package could be pretty reasonable..

watch out, SD-10 really thinks the SD-10 is superior to the Mica, let alone the AIM-120C 😉

they should’ve opted for the APG-63(V)2 instead, yes indeed they should.

The only advantage is that the SH is carrier capable, and the two engine issue and how you feel about that. If I don’t need that, I don’t need to spend extra $$$ on paying for extra engine infrastructure. That also eats into the cost per year to maintain. If you get an F-18E/F and face a modern air threat, you will have to turn right around anyway and buy a jet that can do air domination, cause it ain’t the jet.

F-16 crashes come in a few flavors… many being pilot error or formation mid air. When it comes to engines… like the Italy lease for example. Those old engines were never meant to be completely refirbed 5 and 6 times.

A new off the shelf F-16 of the Block 60 variety has most of the structure stuff figured out. ( Structure issues also came in many flavors ) Make mine a Block 60, CFT capable, redo the hard points on the wings that would take wing tanks and smart bus them so they can take PGM racks ( i.e. no wing tanks ) Quad rack for SDB, and twin rack for GBU-12, JDAM-32-35-38 ), triple rack for JCM ( Joint Common Missile ) when it comes on line. SNIPER-XR / PANTERA for the Pod. Pretty good deal. Cheap to operate if you reduce crash risk by keeping away from formation mid-airs, NVG training, and don’t major overhaul an engine more than 3 times.

Any additional force structure I would add to support the F-16 would be A-45C UCAV and EA-45 UCAV for ECM/ELINT.

Good post Elper, but why do you think the Super Hornet is not good in Air Dominance? Especially when compared to the F-16E/F?

in either case I think both are currently better and have a better future than the two heavier eurocanards.

why didn’t I include the F-15? I personally feel that it really is reaching the end of it’s life span.. but the F-16 series and F-18 production line is still going and will still go on for a while!

PII: I agree.. despite what many Hornet bashers say.. there’s alot of positive things about the Super Hamburger.. although I do admit there are is are some negative things about it. But compared to the Block 60, that’s a hard one.. its like the lwf competition again but this time they both aren’t light 😎

I’m not subscribed to the Sunday Telegraph, but they write, that the British MoD wants to sell all its 50 Tranche 1 Eurofighters.

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk >> UK News

wow already? I really think Britain should’ve went it alone with p.110

    http://www.eurofighter.starstreak.net/Eurofighter/images/p110.jpg

or even attempt to fully develop Replica

(pics from JWcook site and I-D site).

these multinational partner consortiums have just caused different needs and lots of delays.. in the end the Typhoon is still not complete in it’s development while its contemporaries the F-16 block 60 and even the F-18E Double hamburger already has what the Typhoon (and Rafale) intends to achieve in several years..such as A2G integration and AESA radar.

Instead of naming planes after evil things like dragons, I think planes should be named after benevolent things, like Biblical figures:

    The F-14 Jesus
    The F-15 Moses
    The F-16 St. Paul
    The F/A-18 Jebediah
    The F/A-18E Super Jebediah
    etcetera

Airplanes should be named after food items.. why? because it’s neutral in everyway!

    The F-14 Dorito
    The F-18 Hamburger
    the F-18E Double Hamburger

    for Chinese airplanes..

    the J-7 Spring roll
    the J-10 Kung Pao Chicken
    the FC-1 Char Siu Pork

i think this topic needs to be discussed more..

I always thought M2K2 offer more diversity in mission roles, especially when it already is tested for JDAM, and other precision A2G roles and some limited maritime strike with the Exocet..

but seem like the Gripen is catching up with Spice, Taurus, etc..
what is more that the main disadvantage of Gripen (the swedish law against exporting weapon to countries at war) and American components may be reduce with BAe’s help and incorporating S.African+Israeli weapons and offering variety to what it can carry (correct me on details here).

i’m interested in range figures for variety of load out and type of missions.

Vortex, Vortex, Vortex, where have you been

worst Nato members is probably the newest members

    http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/39980000/gif/_39980511_europe_nato4_map203.gif

which include BULGARIA.. but this time around the worst may well be the Baltic state with literally NO Air force 🙁 other than a few trainer and helicopters.

But in terms of an Nato Air Force that do have combat aircraft, Bulgaria is the worst.. so much problems with maintenance issues, crashes and bad upgrade deals make you go tsk tsk.

Please note that the M53-P2 might be reliable, but it is also a less than stellar performer.

Designwise it is a simple single shaft turbofan with a bypass ratio of 0.4.

Compression ratio is a mere 9.8:1, which is so far behind the leading edge as to be embarrassing. It is heavy and underpowered compared to any contemporary engine.

SFC in mil thrust is 0.90 compared to 0.77 for RD-33.

So it ought to be reliable, given its complete lack of any high tech features!

well if it still contributes with the Mirage’s fame for high operational rates, sortie rates and low operation costs.. then having the “less than stellar engine” is A-ok! 😎

Speaking of island wanting to seperate from the mainland..

i’ve been really wanting Svalbard to secede from Norway 😡 😡

I doubt their F-16s can handle a bombing run up there 😀
I hope Viper the Matt Damon look alike will see this.

Here is the scenario (a realistic one that is):

You are Sec o’Dec of a country that
a — is not willing to spend any money on military toys and
b — is not threatened militarily by anybody whatsoever

Now go ahead! Build your airforce!

PS – a hint: Maybe you stage it like the Austrians. Buy EF2000!

Quite simple.. I will convince the Americans to build an Air Force base on my country, have them station some F-15s to chase the bears out 😉

build lots of businesses around the base and watch the local economy grow while the forces of Russia, Latvia, Switzerland and Tanzania combined, will decide not to attack! of course I have no hostile neighbors 🙂

hey..if Iceland can do it..so can McDonalds Island 😡

Burger: my friend, though Sparta and it’s history do interest me a great deal, I sadly think that invading Troy is a lost cause, next you’ll be telling me that a big wooden horse stands at our gate and that the Greeks have left over night.

I can’t understand your obsession with the destruction of Bulgaria though, I mean Hitler hated the Jews because he was part Jew. Applying that rule are you part Bulgarian? One has to wonder!

Acutally a big wooden horse does stand

    http://www.siriustravel.com/turkey99/karenphots99/trojhrs.jpg

it stands in Cannakkle (pronounced Jannakkle).

as for Bulgaria. I don’t hate the Bulgarians silly boy, I just think Russia deserves another access to the Blackened Sea 😮
