Yeah, that other Italy.
More like a twin engined version of this:

France made the right move taking the lead of the program…At least for its own interest.
Including Italy or/and the UK in the program would give each country a very small indutrial share…At least too small for France who like the UK wants to maintain the full spectrum of know-how to build a high end fighter jet.
Germany could be the right partner if the political will does not errode over time. Financially in good shape and not willing to take the lead.
I think that when France says that others (UK/Italy/Sweeden) are free to join provided the Franco/German leadership remains unchanged they know that the UK and to a lesser extent Italy would never accept this condition. They surely want to play a bigger role.
Sure they must be quite angry at the situation as France & Germany moved quickly to be in the stonger position.
UK/Italy for Tempest seems a good ticket for them to maintain a good industrial basis…Impossible with the Franco German program. So instead of having 3 different program in Europe we would have only 2…Already a progress !
Imho the title is a bit misleading. It’s basically a French programme with backing from the current German government. The specs are French, the largest part of the workshare will be French. Maybe it will succeed if the French taxpayer is willing to shoulder the lion’s share of the development costs.
But that’s not the only issue. The other obstacle are export policies. France is more or less willing to sell to everyone able to pay while every large political party in Germany prefers a holier-than-thou approach to arms exports.
“Contributing” to Gripen NG would have been a better idea considering fiscal realities and military ambitions over here in Germany.
I’m wondering how much RR input we will see in the new engine. They bought MTU and ITP and then this: https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-britain-eu-rolls-royce-hldg/rolls-royce-could-move-engine-design-approval-to-germany-idUKKBN1HU2D9
Germany officially knocks F-35 out of competition to replace Tornado
The madness continues. The only reason for an American type is the nuclear sharing. The SH is not cleared for the B-61-12, nor is it planned for integration. A legacy aircraft flying hundreds of kilometres over Russian territory to deliver gravity bomb. What a great idea.
If the rumor mill is correct it will be a split buy. Typhoons and a Squadron JSF.
^ Are there any political consequences of this for the defense minister and other high ranking political and permanent defense ministry officials?
Nope. I mean she did a stellar job. Thanks to her efforts there are new uniforms for pregnant female soldiers, new kindergardens and the MoD paid 300 million Euro in advance to consulting companies (just in case they need consulting at some point). Meanwhile they closed the Marinearsenal Kiel and the Luftwaffendepot in Erding to save costs. Unfortunately logistics are now a mess. Which nobody could have guessed, honestly.
Another wishlist thread ? I would assume the outcome to be a bit predictable this time. Ah, whatever:
2010 is a bit late. The Mirage 2K assembly line offer expired in 2007 IIRC- that kills this chance for standardization. Leaves only the MiG and Sukhoi as options. I’ll go with the cheaper one.
2010-201X MiG-29 SMT & Tejas. A bit more comprehensive upgrades to the exisiting 29’s + refurbished/new built airframes of the same standard. Lets say an initial MiG order worth 4 Squadrons, and then adding orders to the MiG untill the Tejas production is ramped up.
202X-2030 Tejas & FGFA
2030-2040 MCA & FGFA
The Saab 37 family imho isn’t really well suited to work outside the Swedish context. Attack versions are very limited in weapon options. The JA 37 fighter version is ok as a fighter but the F-15 is better.
Mirage 2000C is comparable to F-15C in versatility but again the F-15C is better. Maybe in a hi-lo-mix, but then F-15/F-16 makes more sense.
Here I have to disagree. It is imho the perfect choice for a small to medium sized country without any aspirations for expeditionary warfare. Just remember the buzzwords from the timefrime: BVR, look down/shoot down radar, digital flight control. Yep, ticks all the boxes except air2air refuelling, which is a non issue for a defensive doctrine. By 1985 it even had a fully operational data link.
Single type fleet: JA-37 Viggen. All weather, multirole and BVR capable in 1980.
Mixed Fleet: F-15 & F-16. These aircraft pretty much defined the high-low mix principle.
Things look better for India, don’t they ? The Teja gains traction and a foreign light weight fighter looks more and more unlikely. Quite a few of the current medium fighters/bombers are likely replaced by MCA or existing types. FGFA may take some time but in the end it’s probably ready when the MKI replacement is due.
Of course it is imortant to German politicians. Nuclear participation comes with seats at some tables. The Bundeswehr of today is not about real capabilities. It’s a bargaining chip and a tool to support the industry.
And admiral Nolting can be quoted with “the next jet for the Marineflieger has to be carrier capable”. Nolting is gone (and fast jets for the Marine, too).
For Germany (let’s say the last decade):
Fast jet fleet:
1st: Vastly more investment in Typhoon development:
For T2 a GaAs AESA, full DASS (laser warners !), PIMAWS, PIRATE, GBU 54, Meteor, increased capacity supersonic drop tanks.
For T3 GaN AESA, airframe refinements, EJ 220/230, improved DASS + ARMIGER for SEAD, Brimstone and integration of GBU-54 on that British unitary launcher, HOPE/HOSBO and full T3B order.
2nd: Gripen C lease and subsequent participation in Gripen NG. I really want a lighter Gripen NG with EJ 220/230’s. Taking over tac recon/CAS mission from the Tornado fleet + the usual QRA duties.
3rd: Rafale B for JaBoG 33 to take over the strike role from our Tornados. Sarkozy offered nukes, that’s the carrier system for them. Integration of Iris-T and Taurus.
4th: Rafale M for MFG 2 -> integration of RBS-15 F-ER
Transport fleet:
That’s were I would actually increase numbers.
24 C-17’s. Would allow for easier deployment of heavy equipment and creates more wiggle room to sort out the A400M programme.
24 A330 MRTT for PAX, MEDIVAC and of course a2a refuelling.
Depending on the ability of Airbus to solve A400M issues a C-130J order for helicopter refueling and tac airlift.
24 Bombardier Global 6000. 6 VIP/troop transport, 12 Gobaleye (replacing the ill fated Eurohawk) and 6 fitted with an ELINT suite to replace the ELINT Atlantiques.
Helicopters:
Merlins as Sea King replacement. This Sea Lion thing was such a bad idea.
Further development of the Tiger armed scout. Yes, I don’t consider it an attack helicopter, but that’s not necessarily bad. Improved engines, maybe a new 5 blade rotor. Improved sensor package + integration of a laser designator/laser guided rockets.
CH-53K to replace CH-53G/GS.
Keeping the original NH-90 order instead of switching part of the order to Sea Lion.
H145M for the SOF’s.
And 8 Be-200 for our THW- not strictly military, but would allow to fly the flag globally.
The Swedish Tidls data link fleetwide to complement MIDS.
Not directly aircraft, but related:
Instead of MEADS ASMP-T. No Gepard retirement without a replacement on Boxer and Puma chassis.
Yeah, not exactly a global shopping spree. Intended to improve European/NATO integration while at the same time increasing capabilities (see Merlins instead of those half-assed NH-90 Sealions). Emphasis on expanding support assets.
The Global 6000 order, some commitment and additional capability may even persuade the Canadians to consider this supercruising twin engined fighter from Europe as Hornet replacement. 😉
1. Viggen
2. Mirage F1
3. if all else fails a combination of MiG-23ML and BN.
