Please specify a timeframe. We had 60’s and 50’s for the “whats the best aircraft in disguise threads”. Are we selecting aircraft for a current requirement or say the post cold war period for the air forces of our countries ?
F-100. Produced 54-59, supersonic, multirole.

Do you mean only the German line? Typhoon production overall certainly isn’t ending next year. The orders from Kuwait & Qatar will still be being delivered in the 2020s.
Yes, German FAS.
No. The best option for the German Industry is to gain experience on a Stealth aircraft. Think future. Think at the next Franco-German project.
True. However I have my doubts this “project” will go anywhere. Soon enough our glorious leaders will realize that this will be pretty much a French aircraft with at best minor German contributions. But w/e.
Buying the bloody F-35 to gain operational experience with stealth and then an extensive Typhoon MLU. Basically reversing the minimalistic aproach of the last 20 years.
Maybe additonally to the obvious upgrades something like those stealthy weapon pods proposed by Boeing. To gain experience with designing a weapon bay, advanced materials and so on.
Reason I brought the Rafale into it isn’t as much about the platform. At this point it’s only academic to talk about it but it’s an interesting what if.
Currently pilot training is done nearly completely in the USA, resulting in a very US centric Luftwaffe cadre. If we had at least a part of our pilots trained in France and TaktLwG 33 directly attached to EC 1/4 things could be different. This insight in the French way of operating would imho greatly help in the definition phase of the new fighter.
But as I already wrote that would be only good if my Government would suddenly be very serious about defense and this partnership with France.
Just a few things:
Typhoon production ends next year (it was already stretched out). Additional Typhoons would either have to come frome Italian/British assembly lines or production in Germany restarted. Selecting a type and negotiating a contract will take longer than a few months.
2+4 Treaty: No nuclear capable weapon system in eastern Germany permitted. It’s either a new type or an considerably different Typhoon version which would require some development time.
In short: time is running out for a Typhoon order.
Task profile of Tornado IDS in German services: low level deep strike penetration against known (= back then (semi-)stationary targets); warload would have been partially tactical nuclear, partially dispensers. Already during the Gulf War 1990 low level penetration proved unhealthy (ok, very flat terrain in the Euphrates valley, makes it especially difficult.
And lot’s of other mission profiles including CAS, Interdiction, BAI, ASuW and SEAD.
A pure technical replacement of Tornado will be Eurofighter armed with some stand-off LO cruise missiles, paired with STA (the more real time the better) UAVs. There is no need to introduce another platform for that mission.
Uhm yeah. Which UAV’s, which data link and which missiles ?
However, doing a purely technical replacement ignores the bigger question. What for would Germany need such a system? Well, it does not need it but the U.S. orders its vassals to be hostile against Russia. And the vassals, ruled by a traitorous fifth column obliges and pisses away its people’s future. The U.S. strategy to force Continental Europe into dispute with Russia, and to create chaos in the South, thus building a ring of instability around Europe is what should be talked about and should be the basis for decisions concerning Tornado replacement.
Yeah sure. Barroso and Sarkozy are US secret agents. A lot of good targets for tac air instead of your doomsday ideas are concentrated in an area known as Kaliningrad oblast.
So instead of all this paper and powerpoint stuff it would be nice to get something already existing with a known price tag.
Who exactly is more closest partner than France in Europe and what they done for Germany.
For example the Netherlands.
https://www.thetrumpet.com/13745-germany-is-taking-over-the-dutch-army A bit alarmistic, but covers most of the integration. Just add air defense now under Dutch command and the contracts signed for shared A330 MRTT pool.
Compare that with the Franco-German Brigade, which is just light infantry with the wrong type of artillery attached. The bumpy cooperation on the Tiger and maybe some shared Jerkules.
what’s more, they want the leadership in future german-french fighter.. it may be complicated to start negotiations like:
– “ok, you, alone, did a better job then four of us on the last one, so, why not let us lead the program for the next fighter?”
– “er, you’re serious?”
Err, no ?

It’s in German, but Google translate may offer you a decent translation. Basically it was expected France would lead the fighter project, while Germany would get the project leadership for the MALE Eurodrone. But French being French they demanded leaderhsip for both.
The Rafale offers nothing that Germany canโt get out of a Eurofighter and any suggestion that Germany buys Rafales for nuclear delivery is flawed. For starters the French donโt have enough air delivered warheads to share, they are down to approximately 40 TN 81. Second, France sharing nuclear weapons would be a direct violation of the Non-proliferation treaty. NATO nuclear sharing gets around that agreement (never legally tested of course) because it was in place before the NPT was signed but would be in place for any new agreement, placing France and Germnay in violation.
Well, the Eurofighter is quite flexible in CAS and interdiction with a mixed Brimstone/LGB armament, while the Rafale excells in strike missions with heavy loadouts. Plus nuclear option. I assumed a similar arrangement to the current one would avoid problems with NPT. Qualifiying the EF for nuclear weapons would be an issue with 2+4 treaty. No nuke carriers in eastern Germany- no Eurofighter in Laage. There is some merit to introducing another type.
Plus if politicos are serious about this new French/German fighter it may not be that bad to have operational experience with French aircraft and French trained crews.
However, I would prefer the F-35 option. Modern, no hassle with B-61-12 integration and nuclear sharing in general, constant upgrades and better integration with our closest partners in Europe.
Addtional Eurofighters offer no capability gain, investment in upgrades for the current fleet would.
So if the Germans are being sensible and looking to replace Tornado with Typhoon…
Why would you consider this sensible ? Negotiating a contract would take at least a year. By then, the aircraft would have to come from the Italian or British assembly line. It would require investment in additonal capabilities. I mean our current fleet isn’t even full spec. No laser warners, no Pirate and so on. And suddenly we will see the funds for the development of an ECR variant (thats the current rumor floating around the corridors), the integration of additional weapons, CFT’s, sensors AND pods ? For introduction in 2025 ?
Please no. The F-35 isn’t exactly the perfect choice, but it’s the only 5th gen aircraft available on the market and it will see constant upgrades. I guess one could work something out to avoid engine overhaul in Turkey and be done with it.
Actually I’m kinda surprised the Rafale isn’t even considered. Would be a good platform for the heavy weapons. One squadron attached to EC 1/4, French training, French logistic train just German crews and mechanics.
Let’s see if politics trump military requirements again.
The Indians wanted the Rafale as Nuke carrier. Therefore they accepted bs figures from Dassault to declare it L1. That’s it.
mrmalaya, i have to (respectfully) disagree, that video is the epithome of a XXI century Tornado ECR (Electric Combat / Reconnaissance) replacement. Airbus, with that video describes a Tornado replacement not a Typhoon.
The design has a bit of a F-16XL “look” to it.Cheers
I’ve seen a different clip. ๐ Those Barracuda esque remote carriers fill the DEAD role (jamming and weapon release). Typhoon: Standoff weapons carrier/mud hut bombing. Barracuda: SEAD/DEAD. New top of the line fighter/sensor platform.
No Details were given. Oh, and I have to correct myself: Brimstone was called the 90% solution. Muellner only mentions a 100% and 105% solution, but didn’t go into details. Just that they would require development funds and there would be a development risk involved.
Tests werte carried out with dual mode Brimstone, but no details which model will be ordered in quantity. Only that deliveries may start as soon as 2019. Once again, no English source available.
https://www.hartpunkt.de/luftwaffe-fuehrt-brimstone-fuer-eurofighter-ein/ Lots of talk about increased cooperation with the UK/RAF.
Typhoon now qualified for GBU-48. For lack of an English source, in German: http://www.flugrevue.de/militaerluftfahrt/kampfflugzeuge-helikopter/eurofighter-testet-gbu-48-in-vidsel/735176
Brief summary: first drop was a miss due to a hardware defect. After identification and fix all subsequent drops were direct hits.
Unrelated: Looks like the Luftwaffe will get Brimstones. Muellner called it few months ago a cost effective 80% solution.
Nuclear deterrence is a bit an awkward show stopper, because by that logic it would also be denied on the “new next generation fighter ” .
Correct me if wrong, but is nuclear deterrence for Germany Airforcenot like that of Belgium ? or is it more sophisticated than free fall nuclear bomb B something ?.
But yes that still opens up the question now and in the future to how far Germany and others would be willing to go along building a European defense governed by Europe or is NATO and US few nuclear assets on “loan” led by US the only option for Europe ?
Yep, same arrangement as other NATO nations like Belgium and the Netherlands have. US bombs and national carrier aircraft. The F-35 will get the B61-12 and the existing stocks are upgraded to this standard. Which would require the upgrade of the Tornado or purchase of a compatible carrier aircraft. ๐
