It won’t change a thing in the Indian tender, as only capabilities available at the avaluation period between April and September this year will be considered.
By the way, as replacement for MiG-23/27 CAS aircraft Typhoon doesn’t fit very good in the picture.
In my opinion the Typhoon was only invited to examine it’s capabilities, as Saudi Arabia could support Pakistan in a possible war.
I think the important part is that we now have it official. I saw many claims that the license agreement would cover the production of the J-11B.
The F-2 was the replacement of the F-1.
The “natural” replacement for the F-4 will be something in the size of the SH.
The “natural” replacement of the F-15 will be something in the size of the F-22.
The “natural” replacement of the F-2 will be something in the size of the F-35.
😉
Maybe in your opinion. The F-2 was originally planned as replacement for both F-1 and F-4.
The production has been stopped on cost grounds.
Who do you get that idea?
If they didn’t stop F-2 production, we wouldn’t argue about a F-4 replacement.
Are they really interested in acquiring that technology ? Would only make sense, if the would try to produce something on their own. And the F-2 wasn’t exactly an overwelming succes.
I find it somewhat strange, that Japan is willing to pay 300 million $ a pop for a plane, that only looks like a F-22.
300 Million $ for a monkey version ! I mean really, this should be nominated for the most expansive white elephant ever.
Hehe, everytime I see that pic it makes me wonder what number 10 and 12 are… all the others correspond to a real aircraft I can identify.
Same here 😀
Why not spend that money on their own program? Nobody can’t beat Western technology anyway. 😉 It doesn’t even need to be a true 5th generation. This is just a case of like buying a luxury handbag to them.
From the article I linked:
Although this is little-known among foreign observers, the ministry also requested about 8.5 billion yen in the next fiscal year budget for preliminary work to develop a Japanese version of the stealth fighter called Shinshin, meaning the Heart of God. The ministry plans to spend a total of 39.4 billion yen until the fiscal 2015 to develop the Shinshin.
I guess I should buy LM stocks.

The important part: Japan would be willing to pay $300 million each for a fleet of 100.
These are JASDF F-2, not F-16. They participate in Cope North 2009.
No, I replied to frankvw, who said we could abondon SALIS, if we would go for C-130 + C-17.
That is not the case.
The A-400M (as it was planned) could have at least partly replaced SALIS, taking over from the Il-76.
C-130 would be unsufficient for that part, C-17 prohibitive expensive.
Same could be said about transportation of all planned vehicles (Boxer, Puma,…).
Which ever scenario, without leased An-124 we would have huge problems sustaining our operations in A-Stan.
No, the EU countries need transports now. Can the A-400M, buy C-17s and Herks.
And as we’re at it, stop leasing AN-124s.Just my 2 cents.
C-17’s are six time as expensive as SALIS per delivered ton. Add to this the aircraft is too small for CH-53 transportation without disassembling it.
Even the British MoD (which operates both C-130 and C-17) plans with the need for 200 Antonov flight hours every year.
At least from Germany, I don’t see any desire to go for C-17’s. Maybe some Jercules, to replace Transall for the Termes <-> M-e-S flights.
Cellphone towers ? Just bomb some powerplants, and they should become useless !?
Wrong. The Swiss version of the Leo 2A5 was assessed against the M1A1 AIM. The difference was minimal at most. Both the Leo 2A5 and M1A1 AIM were both estimated at being satisfactorily maintained within the budget, manning and basing requirements established for Australia’s tank capability based on the existing Leo 1 capability.
Just as a sidenote: the Pz 87 is a Swiss Leo 2 A4 Batch 5, definately no A5 standard.
I mean I can understand why you would like to have a different tank, but I don’t think it is that big of a deal.
Abrams and Leo/Chally have their respective advantages and disadvantages. I myself would most probably have gone for something like the Leo 2 A5 DK (Barracuda nets, aircondition and APU), but there are good reasons to select the Abrams.
I think it all boils down to personal preferences and whom you prefer as supplier.
