I guess “rough field” gets a bit mixed up with “STOL” in this thread. The only modern aircraft I know that was explicitly designed with rough field performance in mind was the MiG-29.
Eurofighter, Gripen and so on had a requirenmend for STOL (read operations from roadstrips).
Well, everything I read about the Merlin are negative things. Corrosion, cracks in the tailsection and so on.
And the NH-90 ? Well, would be nice to see them beeing delivered on time and schedule.
To be honest, I think both programmes aren’t examples of good engineering and programme management.
No facts ? There is even a law to protect the technology of the Raptor.

“best trained, but the worst equipped”
Well, if that is the case, then it’s nothing some FMS money couldn’t solve for the US. 😉

Well, in my opinion it shows that modern avionics just have their price. And nobody (including the Russians !) can produce them at discount prices.
I guess this ends the myth of Russia beeing able to produce modern hardware at incredibly low prices.
Dunno why, but somehow the username Star49 and his mantra now springs to my mind. 😀

Hm, I’ve got a sneaking suspicion the MRCA contract will be awarded to Bpeing or Dassault. Probably Boeing, with the F-414 a possible solution for the LCA problems.
Sabotage maybe a fitting description, but now that MiG is merged with Sukhoi I can’t imagine they do this on purpose.

How can an aircraft be contender in a competition, that wouldn’t exist in the first place, if this very aircraft would be available and up to expectations ?:diablo:

The magic crystal ball tells me the following:
Swiss competition: Rafale, Typhoon, Gripen
Indian MRCA: Rafale, Typhoon, F-16I, F-18E, MiG-35, Gripen
Brazil FX: Rafale, Gripen, F-18 nothing, will end as every previous competition
Libya (they didn’t sign anything final with Russia yet): Flanker, Rafale
Nederlands: F-35, Gripen

Could it be, these 91/92 ISD’s belong to upgraded Phantoms ?
Edith: The upgraded Phantoms were delivered between 1989 and 1995.
