Yes, and Typhoon is tested at the moment in Norway.
Unfortunately Singapore is not cold enough for such tests…

I think there’s an important difference between this procurement and the Polish one: with the amount of industrial offsets offered for buying the Block 52s Poland are getting great new aircraft and also making a profit on the deal!

Yes you are right: those offsets are a great deal for the Polish and the Americans. The only thing that me ****es off is the fact that those offsets are to 50% sold with money from the EU. In fact from Germany, Sweden and Austria. And yes you are right: they get great aircraft. Something Poland would never be able to buy with their own money. Gripen and Viper are both no German products, but these ‘offsets’ include the loss of many jobs in Germany. If they would pay them on their own, everything would be nice.

It’s up to the politicians to make the final decision, and they certainly will feel more pressure from the US to “decide smartly”.

The Gripen seems to fit perfectly the Czech needs.
But this was the case in Poland, too. Now they operate F-16… And I’m pretty shure they don’t want to belong to ‘old europe’.
The political pressure will be pretty high. But the situation is different in Czech Rep. The EU has learnt something from the polish decision. They won’t give money to them to buy American fighters. The Polish where very clever in this case.
So political pressure comes from both sides. Maybe ‘old Europe’ is not that aggressise as ‘new America’, but we won’t spent money one more time for people that don’t think european…
Next thing is that Poland has the biggest airforce of the new NATO partners. They decided for some more NATO-interoperable equipment. Polish F-16 are dedicated for use in scenarios like Iraq. The Czechs will use their fighters only for strict national purposes like air policing. For NATO operations the Czechs have their ABC-troops and their Hinds.

Uhhh did I mention French hardware ? I’m sorry.
    To pilotght:
Of course IS the CdG the BEST what Europe has to effort.
But it is laughable compared to a Nimitz.
It is part of the EU rapid reaction force. For this mission (giving 60.000 men and the own fleet cover AND CAS) it is by far to small, point. But it is the best we can afford. There where and are many propulsion problems. I see it more as a testbed for atomar propulsion, the Aster missiles, Rafales and so on… Predecissors could be the future British carriers or a new french carrier.

    Hi Everyone,
who got more info’s about the usage of those fighters ? Will they be used in the same way as the old F-5’s or are additional capabilities requested ?
If not, my personal favorite would be Gripen.
But it is a **** bad time to buy them. All major upgrades will be fieldet in the next 3-6 years. After those upgrades it will be even capable to take on the Flanker. But if you buy them now: to much “old” US-equipment inside. For those smuggler-kicking thing Brasil has enough Tucanos for that proposal. And as I see it: The FAB operates with the AMX the most modern mudmover in South America.
It is the classical situation: fewer heavy fighters or more light fighters to cover the same area…

The Flanker has simply no enemy that would justify it.

The M2k has a bright future, too. UAE bought them, and Dassault will need to keep it modern as the Rafale seems to be to similar to Typhoon. They got their link to Embraer. Lobbying has ever been very important. They got the best cards. That is why I would bed on M2K as winner.

In the European context the worst thing I see is reducing the carriers. And those nice Destroyers, well, we got no shortage in Europe. But carriers ? CdG is more docked than in service, and those small carriers carry not enough aircraft for CAPs and CAS AND defending the own fleet. Even reduced numbers of the Typhoon would be not that important as real carriers in Europe.
A variant carrying 40 aircraft to give cover for amphibious operations would be damn nice. ( 70 aircraft would be perfect !)And those VTOL-JSF is in large problems, 2 t overweight. That’s pretty much for a light fighter.
Nethertheless I hope they will solve the problems, because it is the most “british” and the most unique JSF.

I ment I would bed on the Mirage as winner. It was not clear in my post above.

In my opinion, the Su-35 isn’t the best fighter which is being offered to Brazil. The Gripen is!!

As I know, the FAB is using RS-99A equipped with Erieye-radar. Therefore the Gripen will fit perfectly. Only problem I see is the climate. Gripen is underpowered, the hot climate would reduce power even more. It uses an AMERICAN engine, nearly 30% of the Aircraft is American. This is o.k. for defending Sweden but for exports…. Shurely the Gripen is most cost effektiv, but what weapons will be used ? The Swedish are pushing Meteor and european weapons. At the moment they use AMERICAN Sidewinders and AMRAAM’s. The only option would be the South African weapons… Situation awareness is the magic word of our days together with stealth. Gripen has the lowest RCS, Datalinks are an Swedish idea. Gripen COULD have a bright future: HMS, NORA(pretty cool !) ,Meteor, Iris-T possible EJ-200/220/230 with TVC, CFT’s and so on. Fact is: Flanker and M2K have indegenious weapons, engines and electronics. They are more modern today, they have higher payload and range. The Flanker is the reference for any Western fighter. It is big, mean and has impressive firepower and radarrange. The Mirage has in my opinion the best E/W-suite. The question for me is what is Brasil looking for ? The expansive but impressive Monster Flanker, or the cost effective Gripen with it’s interesting future. Or the way between:The Mirage. Dassault and Sukhoi made the better offset offers.
But 150 Flankers ? 150 Gripen/M2k would fit more to the budget of the FAB…
