Well, in hindsight it would have been probably the best solution to get F-18E/F as the heavy part of the airforce and later Gripen NG (sharing the same engine) as replacement for MiG-29 and F-5. I know there is a proposal on the table to lease some C-model Gripen now. Is this intended as some kind of bridge to Gripen NG or are used C-models acceptable as permanent solution ? Maybe South African ones or upgraded A/B models from Swedish depots ?
I doubt the RAF has any appetite for untestet aircraft. 10 on order are fine, but that is quite different to off the shelf solutions with thousands of service hours under their belt. In 5 years it may become a serious contender. Remains to be seen when the UK finds the money to fund a new MPA.
I guess my point didn’t get through. There is at least one aircraft that fits the requirenments: Gripen. Already quite a good percentage of it built in the UK, low operating costs, sufficient range and supersonic dash capability. If one wants to improve on this, just stick a EJ-200 in it instead of a RM-12 and it will be a decent supercruiser.
It’s not like other aircraft are looking exactly like what has been proposed they could look like at this time frame!
If I look at comparable programmes (read Super Hornet and Rafale) they look quite a bit closer to what has been proposed. Fact remains tons of money has been thrown into the black whole EADS. Nothing new I guess. Wherever they are involved they just take the money and deliver unfinished trash in return. NH 90, Tiger, A-400M, Eurofighter. Even when there is a fix price contract, they have the nerve to demand more money to deliver an under spec mentainance hog.
If the UK really was serious about a high/low mix the perfect aircraft consists of many parts already made in britain and stuffed with british electronics. Instead of an F404 variant, it could be fittet with an EJ-200 making it the perfect low in this high/low mix. 😉
If we include paperplanes I go with the Boeing quad tiltrotor:
Otherwise, An-22 ftw.
When I read the OP, I thought “oh, a curry flavoured quantity vs qualtity argument”. Now I read about totally unrelated, non aviation topics. What a surprise !
300 Su-35
300 JF-17
50 Il-78
50 Ka-52
50 Mi-28
12 A-50 AWACS.
200 T-50.
Your fleet is not nuke capable. I propose to fix that and add dozens of Tu-160 or in case ramp space is insuffient at least some Bulawa missiles in underground bunkers.
I wouldn’t count on German participation. Contracts are in place for ENJJPT at leat until 2018. Even after that… if the Luftwaffe itself has any say in it we won’t trade training in the US for training in France.
This is a quite massive order I would guess when 2/3rds of the fast Jet pilots will fly mostly training aircraft. About how many airframes are we talking here ? And how is this all going to be organized ?
A central training center for all those pilots or a number of trainers attached to each 2nd tier fighther squadron ?
While T-50 and M346 are obviously the most capable candidates, I would guess T-50 wins technical evaluation and then get’s thrown out for some bogus reason.
M346, Hawk et al are a bit expansive, I would think. The motivation behind all this is to reduce costs, right ? My bet is either M346 in partnership with RSAF or PC-21 on cost grounds.
Wouldn’t the M-346 be ideal for such purposes ? Or is it seen as too expansive ?
why is tejas not on the list? it will have the same engine as the gripen ng and also an aesa radar just like the gripen ng.
Gripen C and JF-17 are operational, and both are available for export.
Given the attrition rate of Indian MiG-21 I would assume domestic demand is priority over exports for Tejas. IAF needs MK II yesterday.
What would have been different when the French had C-17 vs some A400M? I’d say very little. Mali was pretty much the scenario A400M was designed around. All the light and medium French verhicles fit into an A400. As long as there is no need to transport MBT’s or heavy engineer equipment no need for C-17’s. A400 can transport Tiger and NH90 too. So, what is exactly the reason European countries should buy the more expansive American aircraft ?
And for what scenario are they planning ? WW 3 ? While I would love to have between 6-12 C-17 operated by Germany to replace Salis at some point in the future, I fear we have no money for such luxuries.
why not TFX? at this stage both KFX and TFX are powerpoint fighters.
both will probably use the same engines.but Turkey and Germany have a longer history together since they were allies in WWI, and semi-allies in WW2.
much of Berlin is Turkish!
Germans wouldnt work well with Koreans anyways. Koreans still upset with Germany being allies with its main historic enemy. Korea should work with Ireland instead.
You are obviously not deriving your wisdom from first hand experience. I had no issues at all working with Koreans.
Turkey already picked Saab as development partner for their project.
