DARIN III is more or less a certainty. In Feb this year, the HAL R&D program director made a reference to the DARIN 3 & even showed its breakout – unfortunately, I had left by then.
Latest from a contact in India is that DARIN III has been approved.
A radar is part of the fit, it will replace the earlier LRMTS. The addition of an all-weather radar with SAR/GMTI will give a significant boost to the Jags strike capability versus its earlier reliance on pods & eye ball Mk1.
I agree. My reason for thinking it a bit strange that the IAF were considering adding a radar was because they had already ordered EL/M-20600 Radar Targeting Pods for the upgraded Jags.
I thought that at the moment DARIN III was just a proposal. Does the Jaguar really need a radar?
For the Jags themselves, we are now at DARIN-3– with the DARIN-2 program for 40 legacy and 37 newbuilds over.
Are only 40 Jags to be upgraded to DARIN 2? If so is this the 40 NAVWASS equipped airframes supplied directly by BAe? No plans for upgrading any of the DARIN 1 aircraft to DARIN 2 standard?
The Agave radar has been replaced with an Elta set – the jury is still out whether it is 2032 or 2052. I tried my best to prise an answer from HAL people at HAL pavilion during AI09… they have confirmed it is a multimode radar from Elta.
Do you know if the Jaguar IM has received a nav/attack system upgrade to DARIN II standard similar to the Jaguar IS?
6 Sqn that operates the Jaguar IM in the maritime role also possess a number of Jaguar IS. Are these IS variants also capable of firing the Sea Eagle anti-ship missile?
The Sea Eagle was utilised as an ASM. Is this missile still in service? I know that it’s replacement, the Harpoon II, has been ordered but is not yet in service.
The Jaguar IS, as well as operating as a strike aircraft, performs a recce role. The Vinten VICON 18 Series 601 (GP) reconnaissance pod was utilised for this role. India ordered the Condor LOROP pod for the Su-30. Do the Jags still use the Vinten pod or have they also switched to the Condor pod?
India currently has six Jaguar units (Nos 5, 6, 14, 16, 27 and 224). With the exception of 6 Sqn (which operates in the maritime role) do all of the other IS units perform recce or is it tasked to a particular sqn?
I have only just got the 300mm f2.8 lens so this was my first time using it. I am so pleased with the results. Most of these images were shot using it. So i agree with you – having good quality glass makes such a difference. 🙂
Thanks for the comment (but good kit alone doesnt make good photographs) :dev2:
