I suppose the question with the C-130 is what happens first. Does it run out of space to put things or does it get to heavy? I’m guessing it’s space or i think seeing as we were the launch customer for the C-130J we could of got Lockheed to put much more powerful engines on it if they were needed.

Here is another model of BAE’s Advanced Hull Form submarine concept.
The Advanced Hull Form has been designed for low cost fabrication using largely flat or single curvature surfaces. This approach also allows rapid repair and modification, giving the basis for a flexible and economical platform through life.
I think i like the second one best so far. This could be interesting times as w esee more info and pictures becoming available.
I got this information from a briiliant site Richard Beedall’s Navy Matters.
http://navy-matters.beedall.com/
It is well worth a look it has huge amounts of information on loads of RN projects current, previous and cancelled.
Here is a diagram of a steam catapult the BS6 that was to be for the cancelled CVA. I’m sure there is more to it than the diagram shows but doesn’t look to hard to make. Famous last words
Diagram of the direct action water-spray arresting gear.
I can’t remember if this was discussed on this thread but here is a picture of the Naval Jaguar M during catapult trials at RAE Bedford, April 1970.
Also anyone what to put names of the ships down. Sorry i’m just not that good at identifing some of the ships. The carriers are normally easyish but the rest are harder.
Thanks

Speaking of the A400, if our C-130’s are in such bad shape along with most of europes how come we are selling them to other nations when the RAF retire them. Indonesia has recently got some from europe and are for flying and some of the RAF ones went some where to?
Without the RN carriers i imagine the UK would of still tried to take back the Falklands but not to sure how this would of worked. Could involve special forces and lots of paratroops to secure a beach head and land some troops as fast as possible. Lots more SAM’s and lots of Air to air refueling to provide some kind of cover but granted it would be a very hard mission. I just can’t see the Uk giving up the Falklands. We would of seen container ships converted to Harrier carriers and all kind’s of idea’s getting made up. Much more risky and maybe more deaths but the UK would of done it anyway.
It just show’s how relevant carriers and SSN’s are to a conflict. Without then it would of been hard. We would of seen special forces blowing Argentine aircraft on the main land or other high risk missions. This would of made world opinion less in UK favour by doing attacks on the main land but needs must.
Wow this is good news for South Korea. Another 6 should be good for its navy and to keep the North under control. What i was thinking is that these have a lean crew. Only 27 is quite small compared to SSN’s that have over 100. I’m not sure why SSN’s need 4 times the crew compared with the 214?
What would you prefer 1 SSN or 4-6 214’s? The price of half a billion Dollars is good for a 214 and crew cost are only a quarter compared to SSN’s.
For most nuclear navies as the UK for example could give up 2 SSN’s and get 10 SSK’s AIP in there place. SSN’s do have an important place and are worth the money put for the RN if when they had 10 SSN’s and no SSK’s i would of said it’s a good idea to cut down to 8 and get 8-10 SSK’s to add to the fleet. SSK’s that are AIP do still have a relevant role to play in today’s modern warfare. Especially good with surveillance and special forces work. Look at what the RN used it’s SSK’s for in the Falklands and other conflicts and i can see there relevance.
Would anyone else give up some of there coutries SSN’s and swap for some SSK’s?
It’s says in the news section that Russia is pushing ahead with the development of the S500. This probably causes a lot of worry for the new SLBM being developed. If the American’s increased the diameter and size of the missile this could provide a large amount of room to fit some kind of counter measures and other equipment to get it past the defences.
I don’t know if it would be possible to speed up the warhead with an addition motor as it’s going fast already. Also to change direction quick enough to avoid defences would take a lot of G force and would have other issues. If the S500 has the ability to target 10 target’s then i suppose put 100 or so counter measures on the new SLBM.
Any one got any idea’s of the names of the new missile. We have had Polaris, poseidon, and Trident. I guess it will be a mythical person/creature with some relation to the sea. Maybe the mermaid missile lol. Maybe someone with a good knowledge of greek mythological stuff can help with this.
I think i heard somewhere that we could be seeing the missile tubes with a diameter of 130 inches that is over 10 feet across! The current trident missile is 83 Inches wide.
I personally think we if we are going to make a new SSBN we will need 4 at least. When we think about this the Royal navy will need there submarines to least long enough until the american’s develop the next missile or new class of subs. Or we could see the Royal navy go through 2 classes of submarines before the american’s are finished with there new class.
The Royal navy don’t want to land them selves in the same situation that happened with cheveline. This cost alot and it’s much better to do things at the same time as the american’s.
The point of having 4 submarines is so that 1 is always on patrol and in times of tension a second is available to go on patrol and the third is available to go out soon after the first 2. to only have 3 even with no reactor refuel needed is dangerous. If possible we should be designing these boats to have a service life of 35-40 years. This seems really hard to do so maybe we will have 2 classes of 25 years each. If doing this them 3 of each should do so long as they are spread out so that 4 will always be in service.
I thin the best thing to do just now is to use HMS Vengeance the newest boat as little as possible and stretch her life out the 35 years and then have a build rate of the 1st 2 new SSBN before the Vanguards go out of service and do a kind of SSBN then SSN build program. This way we should be able to have 4 SSBN’s coming into service in 10-15 years then as the 1st boat is out of service we already have 2 10-15 year old boats and the new class of SSBN’s coming on line. Then spread the new class to build over 15 years but in between each one build SSN’s. This should help the RN get back into sink with the American SSBN and SLBM development times. I imagine this should help keep costs down as we will be able to keep consistent orders going which helps with budgets and suppliers. We would then be ableto have 4 SSBN’s and hopefully 8-12 SSN’s. I should hope the SSN’s build rate will allow the RN to get them cheaper say 6 Astutes for the price of the first 4.
An interesting thing i just read is that HMS Vanguard is being fitted with the new Core H for it’s PWR2 reactor. The rest of the SSBN’s will be fitted with this core as they go through refueling refit. This is the same reactor core that is being fitted to the Astute class to allow them no need to be refuelled during their life time. This technically will allow the Vanguards to run for another 25 years before requiring refuelling. If this is the case what is the main reason the Vanguard’s can’t be keep on for longer?
I would think the hull was pretty strong and could keep going until the american’s have the new missile ready and are replacing the Ohio’s. Look at HMS Sceptre see was launched in 1979 and will keep going until 2010 at least.
What are the main issues that are preventing the RN from SLEPing for 10 years?
They’d still be V class (standard for nuke weapon carriers)
I don’t think the V class is standard for nuclear carriers. The previous ones were the resolution class or R class. There is a bit of a mixed tradition of naming the classes in alphabetical order but this seems to go off sometimes.
Example are
O The Diesel/Electric Porpoise Class
P The Diesel/Electric Oberon Class
R The nuclear SSBN Resolution class
S Nuclear The Swiftsure class
T Nuclear Trafalgar class
U Diesel/electric Upholder class
V Nuclear SSBN Vanguard class
A Nuclear Astute Class
They miss out the awkward letters’ like Q X Y Z. There are some exceptions to this way of naming being inbetween the Resolution class and Swifture class we had the 3 boats of the nuclear Churchill class and in between The Oberon and Resolution class we had HMS Dreadnought and the 2 boats of the Valiant class but they were named HMS Valiant and HMS Warspite. I’m not sure of the reasons for this.
So the next logical step will be for the new SSBN’s to be called the B class and for the next SSN’s to be the C class. But who know’s if that will happen look what they did with the Carrier naming tradition.
Anyone got any idea’s on what the new SSBN’s will be called? i presume they will be the B class or will we jump to another class? For the B class to get the public behind the project we could have a poll to see what names the public would like. Mind you we would probably end up with a load of chav names. HMS Buy now pay later, HMS Bitch Slapper, HMS Burger king, HMS Big berther, HMS bigknob, HMS Booyakasha.
OR maybe we will have B1, B2, B3 and wait for it B4.
You have to laugh at this photo of those American’s with their Toy Guns. lol I bet a you pull the trigger and a flag comes out the end saying BANG.

I wonder if we will see a large Cruise to Europe from the Indian navy either with Viraat before she is taken out of service or with the new Vikramaditya when she comes into service.
I’m not sure when Viraat is going to be taken out of service? some reports say she will when Vikramaditya comes in and some say she may stay until 2019.
I would like to see both come for big multi-national exercises maybe with european and US navies. Lots of air assests maybe 2 CVN’s, assualt ships, HMS Lusty, Ark Royal or HMS Ocean, Juan Carlos, INS Viraat and Cavour. Then all the the other ships as well would be some site. Maybe the gulf or the Indian Ocean would be a good place. Then we could see India put both it’s carriers out to play.
One thing people often forget buy saying we need SSBN is that if they were ever used we are all DEAD! I do understand the MAD situation but its all just a misunderstanding of cultures that leads us to this situation, personally i hope that in the next 30 years th world will realise that we can all get along no problem. Comapred with 50 years ago how many countries don’t agree that we all need to get along and stop fighting each other.
I would want the new SSBN’s as this is the best way too show we mean business but i don’t thin restriciting them is the best way to go if they can hold 10 warheads each them put them on. give it 30 years we will see Iran, North korea, and some african contires come round to that we don’t need to fight and can work for the better of the world. When you show somebody a U2 flight and they can see that up at 65000 feet that the atmosphere is gone it makes you start to think that the world is not such a big place and we all need to work to togheter. World war 2 to us to the end of that kind of conflict as it is impossible to fight that now. now we are mopping the mess.
Would it be a step to far for Russia to look to the Uk for CVF plans? I personallu think the Uk would not give it to Russia or that Russia would want to appear as if it couldn’t manage to develop a Carrrier on their own.
I a mreally surprised to see them asking france fora mistral does anyone know if this story has any thruth in in it.
Soryy for the mistakes whisky wine and beer tends to do that to someone.
