Uhh… or may be it might have something to do with Japan being an island? I.e an enemy that wants to invade has to come by boat..
Well done for noticing that, but unless you are getting invaded by your neighbour most attacks will come from the sea. What i suppose i meant was most countries use MPA like orion and nimrod or helicopters or ships for launching antiship missiles not fighters.
I have noticed that the Japanese seem to put a lot of effort into anti ship defence from their aircraft. I don’t know of the exact reason why they would put so much more effort than any other nation with a coast line. Maybe something to do with there constitution as it is defensive they didn’t have to develop items that other countries have. Is the chance of ship attack so much more great in japan then anywhere else?
I do like the Japanese weaponry i think it will be very effective if it ever gets used. I would be good to get some other weapons tech and input for future programs collaborations with say UK or Australia or Europe. I think the Japanese have a few aces up there sleeve that if they has to use we would be impressed by.
The F-1 Jaguar is an interesting comparison but they do have different missions. The F-1 is Anti Ship and the Jaguar is Low level bomber for land use. I’ve always liked the Jag but maybe the F-1 gets it with its Radar. If i’m heading for ships in the pacific i’d take the F-1, If going on a bomb run across Europe take the Jag.
Are all the aircraft delivered going to be F versions? Is that a little odd i know there are some advantages to having 2 seater’ but surely there are advantages to having the E model. I would think it would have a bit longer legs than the F model and other advantages.
The only other modern aircraft i can think of that has 2 seats is Su-30 and family.
I think the B1-R isn’t new but reworked B1-B with 20% less range but much more payload. Not sure if the RAAF would want it even if it was available. I imagine the cost per hour flying must be huge compared to the superhornet.
Silent eagle was to late for the RAAF and would probabaly be a lot more expensive for a production run off 24. Also if the SuperHornet’s are mainly for ground attack then the silent eagle ain’t so quite anymore with external stores hanging off them.
I think the RAAF got a good deal on an aircraft that is good enough to them. Also being a navy aircraft it should be strong and with them not being thrown of carriers they should be in good condition to sell back to the US Navy if that’s what they choose to do.
Good deal all round i would say. i nearly fell off my chair when i read on budget and three months early! This must be the only military aircraft that has done this in recent times.
Has anyone changed their mind about if Iraqi navy would be ready for these ships in say 1 year if they started training now? I think they would be good for the Iraq navy and they aren’t a bunch of idiots with the correct training they could operate these ships fine. I feel they are perfect to be Iraq’s top end fleet just now until they get bigger and better.
I read this on http://www.naval-technology.com/projects/nakhoda/
A settlement was reached in June 2007 and Brunei accepted delivery of the vessels. However, the Royal Brunei Navy has no plans to commission the ships. Ownership remains with Brunei.
The vessels are berthed at the James Fisher yard in Barrow and BAE Systems has a contract to maintain the ships. They are to be sold with Lurssen as the selling agent.
It looks very unlikely that the RN would take them on as no doubt Brunei would charge us a fortune. I could see them being good for caribbean and Middle east tours. I did consider Falkland’s island protection ship but not sure how they would fare down there. Could it share the Role with HMS Clyde but also do some South Atlantic patrols aswell. You would need 2 to keep a constant presence. Any thoughts?
It seems such a waste to just leave these ships to rust. In the past the RN would take these ships on without any thoughts at all. They seem perfect and even if the Bunks have to be lengthened it want cost that much. We could also just send small sailors to be on these ships. There is bound to be 76 small sailors out of 40,000!
Does anyone know how you can change the name of a topic you have started. I just noticed i have Harriers for Tornados and that is the wrong way round. Also was think of adding and other UK assests abroad.
I think this will be good for Australia and hopefully we can get some meets between RAF and RAAF to have comparisons and to play with each other.
Maybe the RAF have done it with the US Navy already but i’ve not heard anything on this.
I guess as they are to replace the F111 there main role will be ground attack. The Aussies must feel that this plane is a big improvement on the F111 and i hope it serves them well. I don’t think once the F35 arrives in OZ it will replace the SuperHornet i think they will run the 2 together. I wounder what advantages the superhornet will have over the F35 when it arrives in service for the role the RAAF. Maybe better weapons integration/availability. I think the F35 would have to carry things like Harpoon on a hardpoint anyway so that’s the stealth gone. I am also not sure if Anti Ship Missiles and US navy weapons will be available for the F35A if US airforce doesn’t use them? maybe the F35 A B and C will all have the same weapons available by using the same computer or something?
I think this is a good buy for the RAAF and it will fit in nicely to there airforce. Also i wouldn’t they have any neighbouring country that could seriously attack them that they could not fight off with FA-18’s and SuperHornets.
Does anyone know what Weapons package the RAAF have bought for the superHornets.
Also are there any weapons the SuperHornet can use that the FA-18 can’t?
All in All i think a good buy for the RAAF and should really push up the availability over the F111.
Maybe there is a clause in the tanker contract for future use of AAR for assests that the A330 can’t support. Like helicopters and something else that fly’s. What if we get a top up of a NATO aircraft how will that work. Will the tanker folk go in huff cause they were only 1 hour away. What if NATO aircraft want to get a top up from a uk tanker will they need to put contact there MOD and ask them to draw up a contract and send it to our MOD to be apporved before the fuel starts flowing? In fact how does sharing AAR assests work now? Is it just i owe you a top up cheers for the fuel next your round our neck of the woods drop buy and grap some fuel.
So will FSTA AAR be more expensive per litre to offload than a normal tanker we own. Actually that question could be quite comlicated to answer cause with FSTA you are paying for them to clean the Bogs and mop the floor at the base and make the tea, where for a tanker you own you may only be paying for the fuel aircraft and crew.
It will be quite expensive i guess i mean it costs me bloody £200 to get the Alicante and back and i’m not paying the Fat Tax or for a bag or any extra’s or a bloody bit of rubber chicken and i have to sit next to some fat bird who is drinking 6 double vodkas telling me she has been a lesbian for the last 25 years and is scared of flying. Oh have we landed yet oh have we landed yet oh are we on the ground, No dear you will notice landing when the wheels thump off the ground and no it ain’t my retarded family member.
I’m on my way to alicante every night i’ll be hugging by pillow Oh wait a minute it’s amarillo.
If the UK was to lease or purchase another 6 C130J’s would they be the KC130J? Is only the KC-130 able to be turned into a gun ship with the Harvest Hawk Kit. I thought i read it that the Optical equipment would be housed in the front of the Wing tank.
The UK used to have Air to Air Refueling for the Hercules after what happened in the Falklands. But i think they gave up that ability a while ago. (i never understood why) Then the hercules would be able to do all the missions that the KC-130 can do. The Merlin’s are plumbed for AAR i’m not sure about the Apaches or Chinooks though. Could be really useful in theatre. Also could be used for Tornado’s or other planes to keep them on station longer. There is a video here of AAR from an RAF C-130. Also it has Jim Davidson in the Cockpit! What a treat for all!!

Anyone know anything more on the topic?
No. Probably best it stays that way. Call me old fashioned, but that’s the kind of info that we used to want to keep to ourselves, and the chaps and chappesses out there probably think the same.
Probably right on that one. Sometimes i read in the press that we still have the same airforce that originally went out there for the 3000 troops now supporting 8500. Not sure if there is much truth in that.
I’m not to sure about the Harvest hawk upgrade maybe could of been useful for the kind of big ops that are going on just now. Can we spare a transport cause i think pretty much once they put the kit on it there will be high demand for convoy protection etc the kit won’t come off in a hurry.
Does this upgrade have any guns? I read about hellfire and some other missile
I think there will always be human in the Loop somewhere. But if you could have aircraft that can avoid SAM’s and other missiles by pulling extremely high G’s or maneuvers that would kill a pilot in the cockpit then that’s a good thing. I think we will also have long range high endurance aircraft that can stay up for day’s or weeks. I
What i imagine it will come down to will be: Is it worth taking the pilot out of the cockpit for each mission. Easy bombing missions like what predator does just now are fine. But you ask the troops and i bet they are glad they can have a manned aircraft fly low level over the enemy maybe fire the cannon a little to get the targets to surrender. It worked in Iraq.
If going into a high threat environment where a UCAV could go in bomb the target and get out pulling maneuvers that would kill a pilot then that what’s needed. But the technology to make aircraft do that will need to be invented first
We will not see UAV’s take over all roles in the next 100 years anyway.
I think it will depend on the mission but there will always be a human in the loop somewhere. I don’t think we will ever get the stage where you tell the computer wipe out a country or taliban for example and then all aircraft start charging out of hangers loading what arm’s they like and picking there own targets and taking off into the sunset.
Mind you Artificial intelligence is a interesting topic and who knows what it could do once you teach it how to learn. imagine something taking all the information on the Internet and making up its own mind as to what to do with it. Scary Stuff.
I heard new engines are going to be fitted to AH9 versions of the Lynx. Not sure how many of them there are. Maybe help to make up the number’s due to the lack of Wildcats being ordered.
Personally i really hope we get the CVF’s. Then we can get back to building the forces. I would suggest a defence review if a thought it would do any good. What i think the UK needs is to be based on an Expeditionary Force and that way in the extremely unlikely event the viking’s come to invade in long boats we have the equipment to fight but also have the capability to fight on foreign shores. A base in Middle east would be very helpful for a start. even France has a few around the world. Where do we have 1? Oh yeah The Falklands.
I read this in the telegraph today Around £10 billion has been spent on equipment since 2006 of which £1 billion has been spent on armoured vehicles.
I wonder how much of this has been Urgent operational requirements funded by the Treasury and how much was planned for the defence budget. This could help to explain the billions of pounds black hole in the MOD budget.
What is wrong with the UK parliament that they can’t understand if you want to fight wars and act like a big boy in the world you need to back it up with forces and equipment and cash. I’m happy to spend an extra bit of tax if i knew it was going to a good cause and wouldn’t be pissed up the wall!!
Rant over i got so frustrated.
So i guess Sky Shadow was a bit out of date then? I’m not quite sure what kind of threat they will face in Afganistan that differs from Iraq so much.
The Terma Pod and Sky shadow are electronic Jammer Pods then. Please excuse my ignorance but are these pods for using when someone launches a Radar missile/SAM at you the Pod would be meant to Jam it and make it miss the aircraft?
Or are they on all the time to kind of try and throw a bubble around the aircraft so nothing can get a lock on?
I take it they didn’t work to well with the patriot incident in 2003?
Trying to get info on Pods i have always found really hard. I understand flares throw off Infra Red missiles with there heat source but can’t find out how electronic pods work or how effective they are?
Any Info will be very welcome?
Anyone got Info on numbers of uk aircraft/helicopters in Afganistan just now. I have read elements of NAS 845, 846 and 847 squadrons with RN seaking helicoters and Lynx helicopters. There are also the chinooks and Apaches but not sure how many.
Also i read today in the Telegraph that “Commanders will have the opportunity to move around more by air when the first of 11 refurbished Lynx helicopters arrives in Afghanistan later this year.” Anyone know aht the refurb will be?
Finally maybe we should start a uk forces in Afganistan topic? or Uk forces Worldwide Topic.
I never quite understand what these PODS do? I know drop flares but how does this missile MAWS thing work. Does the new pod replace the pointy one that i think was for flares or the more rounded one which is for??
Holy mackerel that’s some howl where can i get one to fit on my car! lol
I think that they rotated the merlins from Iraq every 9 months back to the uk, Maybe they will do the same with the Tornado’s. On the MOD website there is a video called Harriers coming home (i’ve not watched it) so i guess the GR4 is out there or we have no aircover.
Anyone know what types of Aircraft are operating out of Kandahar just now from which nations? I have seen from Channel 5 Airforce afganistan that the base is huge but haven’t be able to find any kind of inventory.
