Here is link to a picture of the carrier at the dock yard. On wiki it says that this picture is in near real time? I don”t think this can be true can it?

Does anyone else notice that the Type 22’s seem to have been getting worked alot harder in recent years than other ships? Everytime i see a ship deployed to the gulf and and east of suez it seems to be a Type 22. Is it just the flag duties they have or maybe they have good air-con or maybe the RN are trying use them up before out of service dates?
Oh dear that doesn’t sound good for Northrop Grumman and Airbus. I don’t really understand the senate in the US. Does it have any bearing that someone who was previously a supporter of Northrop Grumman being replaced by boeing supporter? Would this cuase an arguement in the senate from NG supporter’s?
So the UK no longer manufactures it’s own bombs anymore. I take it we are using up the stocks and once they are gone we will buy american?
I know where you are coming from – but a touch harsh perhaps?.
They’re littoral combattants that will, probably, never be expected to deal with SS4 again in their careers – much less try to undertake aviation ops or effective gunnery in those conditions.
I wouldn’t want to crew one in combat or on any kind of extended voyage, but, for pootling up and down the gulf coastline looking ‘fierce’ they’ll trump a Combattante or TNC45 any day of the week!
I read that these big Baynunah corvette’s are to replace the Ardhana class large patrol boats. These patrol boats are 175 tons full load, armed to the teeth with a couple of 30mm cannons! That’s some replacement. I wish the RN would take a leaf out of there book lol.
They should be suitable for there gulf role. THe UAE seems to buy a lot of fancy stuff that it doesn’t use that much.
When look at Wiki they have that the 2 Kortenaer class frigates bought from Netherlands, The Al Emirat and the Abu Dhabi are being converted into a super luxury Giga yachts known as Swift 141 and Swift 135! That will be some yachts.
If the UK was going to use a Naval Gripen i don’t think it would be STOBAR the RN would use catapults. If Sea Gripen is catapult launched then it should be an good little aircraft. I struggle to see how jet fighter aircraft can get airborne with a useful payload and fuel load without assistance. Maybe the Mig-29K can do it ok as it has huge engines but this then impacts on the mission as they are really thirsty.
If i was going to the effort of building a carrier i would either want a STOVL aircraft or assistance to get of the deck.
I don’t think we will ever see a naval gripen. There’s nobody to order enough to make it worth while to develop? I can only see if India ordered it that it would be worth while. With 4-6 carriers planned you may get an order for 150+ aircraft. The chance of this happening is slim to none and slim just left town. I imagine India wants to build the aircraft it’s self and have the know how for future aircraft development. Also are India going cat and trap from IAC 2?
F-35B is not going to be canned it will be in service soon. To much rests on this model. The USN may cancel the C model but if they do i don’t see them getting anything apart from super hornet’s for the next 20-30 years.
What is the main reason for making the F-35C with a larger wing? With the C model being the last to be developed i wonder if we will see a big difference campared to other models in relation to electronic’s and equipment etc
How do people on here rate the MIG-23 in it’s latest models? is it about the same as a upgraded F-4 phantom? Or maybe an Tornado F3?
Is the MIG-23 more of an interceptor or fighter?
Does anyone think the recent meeting’s of Rafale with Raptor, typhoon etc has something to do with the recent announcement of the French AWACS getting upgraded? anyone know what the upgrade will do? Will this make the French fleet better than NATO, UK, Saudi and US fleets?
Has anyone read this months copy of Combat aircraft? It has a piece in it about the GR9 and &. The guy talking was saying that his aircraft have just been updated with (i can’t remember the upgrade code) the ability to tell the aircraft it is carrying paveways without actually needing to carry them. The next upgrade is link 16 and something else. He seemed to think this was going ahead.
He says they are off to Red flag this year and are going to be doing Paveway III bombing on hardened bunkers etc. He said this is to get the pilot training back up to standard as they have been concentrating on the afghan mission for a long time. Also JFH have been doing carrier training and will be doing night landing’s operations this year. Basically he was saying they are getting there range of skills back.
Are these upgrades going ahead still?
I was always under the impression that not all aircraft would be upgraded to GR9. Some would stay as GR7 and some would be GR7A.
Can anyone remember what the GR7, GR7A, GR9 and GR9A upgrades involved? Maybe JFH will have an all GR9 and GR9A fleet from now on. What squadron is being retired?
If you get a copy of combat aircraft magazine this month it has an article in it about Lybian Mig-23’s. They operate the MLA and MS? versions. It was an interesting read.
As far as your last sentence in brackets, now you really are speaking my language.
But given the time frame and available expertise there simply aren’t the resources to build the thousands of turbines needed, notwithstanding the costs.
My favoured option is nuclear, with two fingers up to Europe until we are ready, and at the same time develop carbon capture/coal for a mixture of that and nuclear for the 4th generation. I just don’t find the arguments for renewables convincing in terms of viability and cost. We are already paying a hidden cost of about 10% for the luxury of the little wind power we have now.
I have not seen hydro mentioned in terms of Scotland. Have they already exhausted the potential?
Now that you mention this 10% we are already paying, i was looking at my gas and electric bill and it had 10% for renewable or something. When was this sneaked in. It’s a complete joke they can get away with this. Will i get 10% off my bill when renewables start making money? I doubt it.
Here is the story about HMS Astute being able to detect the QE2 leaving new york harbour. It doesn’t say that it has done this only that it is possible.
The Astute, the first attack submarine to be built in Britain almost two decades, has a listening system that can detect the QE2 cruise liner leaving New York harbour from the Channel.
This item is also mentioned in a BAE press release.
With a radar signature equivalent to a dolphin, it can remain undetected thousands of miles from home and hundreds of metres underwater. In the right conditions it can detect the QE2 leaving New York harbour from the English Channel.
Now it says that HMS Astute has the same radar signature as a dolphin. I’m not sure this is relevant as don’t you detect nuclear submarines using sonar and listening devices? It must be one impressive dolphin if it can pump out 110db of noise. I would think if the submarine is to be compared to anything it would be a blue whale.
Some of the stories say that it won’t need it’s reactor refuelled in its 25 year service life and some say it’s 35 year service life. Anyone know which is accurate? I’m guessing that if it’s 25 years and you run it for 30 years without refuelling the reactor would just provide a little less power as it went past 25 years? I’m no nuclear expert so i’m guessing here.
When looking at the paper it appears that SSBN’s are a lot quiter than SSN’s. Is there a reason for this? I still dont get the db noise and how this translates to actual noise you can hear on land.
Will we ever see a carrier v carrier battle at sea again? I doubt it. This makes the case that naval aircraft have to be as good if not better than there land based counter parts.
