    Is this for real now?

Russian air defence systems for Iran

    Vladimir Radyuhin

MOSCOW: Russia has begun deliveries of its most potent air defence systems to Iran, a Russian news agency reported.

Russia is currently fulfilling a contract to deliver S-300 air defence systems to Iran, RIA news agency reported quoting confidential sources in the Russian Defence Ministry.

The move has rattled Israel, which has immediately dispatched a senior Defence Ministry official to Russia to thwart the sale.

Moscow earlier met its obligations on supplying Tor-M1 systems to Iran and is currently implementing a contract to deliver S-300 systems, RIA said. Russia supplied 29 Tor-M1 short-range air-defence complexes to Iran a year ago under a $1.4-billion contract.

The S-300 is a long-range air defence system. Earlier defence sources said Moscow was planning to sell Iran five batteries of 300PMU-1 launchers at a price of $800 million. A typical S-300 battery contains 48 missiles on 12 mobile launchers. The S-300PMU can intercept missiles and aircraft from more than 120 km away.

The powerful combination of advanced short-range and long-range air defence systems will enable Iran to counter any Israeli or U.S. attacks. Israeli Defence Ministry official Amos Gilad arrived in Moscow on Wednesday to try and persuade the Russians to cancel the deal on the grounds that it could upset the balance of power in West Asia. Russia has rejected the Israeli protest.

Russia’s military and technical cooperation with Iran has a positive impact on stability in this region,” deputy head of Russia’s Federal Military Technical Cooperation Service Alexander Fomin told RIA.

We have developed, are developing and will continue to develop this cooperation further. The region’s security to a large extent depends on this, he added.

In another move that strengthens Russia’s influence in West Asia, Moscow offered to give Lebanon as a gift 10 MiG-29 fighter jets. U.S. media described the offer as a slap to the U.S., which has refused to provide Lebanon with modern warplanes that could threaten Israel.

Lebanon’s Defence Minister Elias Murr said the unexpected offer made his trip to Moscow this week “the most important visit I have made since my appointment as Minister of Defence.

Ex-Defence chief in call to cut new aircraft carrier order down to one

UK should consider cutting its order for new aircraft carriers from two to one because of pilot shortages, a former armed forces head said today.
Marshal of the RAF Lord Craig of Radley, chief of the defence staff at the time of the first Gulf War, said the Defence Ministry’s autumn performance report showed “shortfalls approaching 49% of junior Fleet Air Arm harrier pilots and over 57% of experienced RAF harrier instructors”.

Lord Craig asked at Lords question time: “Will this not seriously jeopardise the Fleet Air Arm’s ability to provide the fast jet command and leadership required to operate their full fleet of F-35s in the coming decade.

“Has not the time come to be realistic, to halve the number of these aircraft to be procured by the Fleet Air Arm and to limit the carrier order to just one vessel?”

Defence minister Baroness Taylor of Bolton had earlier said the Government would decide early next year whether to buy F-35 Lightning II aircraft, which are being developed in the joint strike fighter programme, to allow the UK to carry out testing alongside the US.

She told Lord Craig: “We do intend to have two carriers. There is pressure on the harriers at present and that is one of the reasons why they are being replaced by tornados in Afghanistan to try to release the burden of continuous operation and activity there.”

Lady Taylor added: “We do have a programme for training pilots and we have made some significant progress … We can be confident we will be using the best pilots possible in all our fleet.”

The full article contains 284 words and appears in The Scotsman newspaper.

And the pointless service strikes again.

Disband the RAF and solve the pilot shortage immediately. Allow the ARMY to develop the CAS assets it needs and the RN to develop the strategic assets required and watch a much more focussed capability emerge that will in turn be much cheaper to operate.

Oh well, at least Iraq is now free enough for Muntadar al-Zaidi to throw his shoes at George Bush.

Shame it is not yet free enough to deal with him in a proportionate way. BBC News

He attempted to assault a foreign head of state……what do you expect?

but why should the UK forces have to continue over there…as we keep saying its americas war on terror…were just assisting

Because America provides the UK with a level of Foreign policy support unseen in modern history. Trident and TLAM as examples and that is without going into the security promise given to Europe during the cold war and since. Oh and AQ dont hate America becuase it is America, they hate it because it is western and judao-christian which means by attachment it also hates the UK.

I repeat once more, I see a clear and logical connection between Wedgetail and Vikramaditya deals. What you see is your problem.
Anything else you got a problem with? If not, this topic is finished..

You do not see a clear connection you were just trolling.

    1. I could not be calmer than this..

    2. Wedgetail has a clear and logical connection to the Vikramaditya deal in that both projects are plagued by delays and cost overruns.

    3. Anything else?

There is no connection whatsoever and all you are doing is trying to justify your failed attempt at trolling.

Actually, not really – they are even less expensive to operate and maintain as any given Delta. Their fate was (almost) sealed due to political and economic reasons, and because some of the crucial components (i.e. the missiles) were not produced anymore, without any replacement possible. The most expensive subs in the maintenance and operation sense are the Oscars.

    Actually Yes.

You are not even wrong.. Flaming a thread about something Russian is counter-productive as, being spoiled by your presence, it cannot be flamed more than it already is..

I am amused by your desperate attempts to pi$$ me off somehow, trust me, old beer, you are not even close to it.. Try harder…

I am not trying to ‘pi$$’ you off at all (althout your resort to foul language implies that you are angered by the failure of your flame bait) I am simply pointing out you blatant effort to troll a thread about the Russian Navy by talking about an Australian AWAACS procured from the US that has nothing to do with either Russia or Navies.

Well if you want to perform the job covertly submarine is the best platform , Aircraft may need rights if it has to fly over some country , a submarine can cover most of the land mass if armed with KH-101.

Rodolfo , I think when you say cheaper its not only $$ but value for dollar , a Borei might be expensive to build but the return of investment in terms of service life , maintenance cost , quality of the platform , refueling cost etc may just make it far more expensive to maintain Typhoon then build new Borei.

One of the reasons the Typhoons were withdrawn was that they were incredibly expensive to maintain.

Ah, this is again the ‘I know what you wanted or didn’t want better than yourself’. I just love this part.. 😎

No you like trolling, and now nobody has taken your bait you are desperately scrabbling around for another way to flame this thread.

There is no need to do that. I’ve said my point and I am satisfied. Unlike you, I don’t feel the need of disassembling the wedgetail topic to the tiniest bits and whine over the internet forums about how [pick country]-an industry sucks badly and how everything there goes down the drain.. Finally, this is where you seem to excel at..

That is exactly what you wanted to do which is why you raised the Wedgetail but now you are dissapointed that no onw has taken your flame bait.
