In this Internet age people love their little conspiracy theories and no amount of patient explaining will ever dissuade them from swearing that the moon landing was filmed on a Hollywood sound stage, Kennedy was assassinated by a squad of something or other on a grassy knoll and Elvis works in the local chippy.

There’s no point trying to debate, any more than it is worth trying to dissuade the aficionados of the Bermuda Triangle that that too is a load of cobbled up bollox.

Ignore it and let the Internet geeks gather in darkened corners and convince each other they are right. It is easier in the long run, honest.

Its all rather sad really. There was recently a BBC series about conspiracies, it went through some of the most famous (the 9/11 one being the last) and systematically debunked every single one of them. What was frightening was the angry reactions of people whos cherished fantasies had been shattered, there was a University department who had studied in depth the 9/11 attack on the Pentagon and had effectively proved beyond doubt that it was hit by a plane………………they recieved bags of hate mail from people with the same absurd beliefs as Phixer accusing them of being in league with the supposed conspirators. The coroner responsible for the Flight 93 bodies was clearly deeply upset and angry about how he had been misqouted by conspiracy theories, he had also been endlessly hassled by people trying to get him to say what they wanted to hear. Unfortunately these insane ideas can and do cause innocent people serious discomfort and upset.

Which from what I read somewhere is just what would have happened in real life, I recall reading that Blue Steel armed aircraft never did QRA duties with a fuelled weapon, due to the fact that somebody relised that keeping a nuclear armed missile containing a large amount of HTP was a very dangerous idea that was not worth the risk in normal peace time conditions. Had the ballon gone up with no warning, the aircraft would have launched and the missile was albe to be dropped as a free fall weapon.

That would have to be the least survivable configuration imaginable for an already vulnerable aircraft.

Absolutely – but this gives rise to an interesting thought. Wikipedia gives the performance as max 2.3 Mach and max 150 mile range. Back of a fag packet maths gives me an initial TTT (time to target) of 6 mins. Of course, this doesn’t allow for acceleration etc but, even if doubled, makes for scant time for defensive measures.

To me it looks interesting but, as you say, the planners eventually gave up on the Vulcans getting within firing range, even at low level.

The missile wont go anywhere quickly if the launch aircraft gets hit before the release.;)

Actually, I remember reading somewhere that the maximum number of Kh-101 missiles carried by the Tu-95MS is 8, in other words it can’t carry any internally because they are too large. The Tu-160 with its bigger bays can still carry a full load of 2×6.

Im sure I read somewhere that the Tu-160 could only carry 6 internally, it is probably my mind paying tricks but for some reason I am convince I have seen it somewhere.:confused:
