There is a “dump” at the Pakistan Airforce Museum in Karachi.
    See my photos at:

(scroll down to “In the dump”)

    No Lancasters or Lancastrians though.

I’m no big fan of the Hornet’s looks but that’s the nicest looking one to date!

I’d have liked to see a Nimrod in Coastal Command colours but it’s a bit late for that 🙁

My Dad told me there’s what’s left of a Heyford buried at the end of the runway at Cosford – he read it in a mag some years ago but I have absolutely no idea when and which one and whether there’s any truth to it – can’t be a lot left if it is there I’d say.

(A spinoff from the original J-xx topic.) AFAIK it’s the first time China is using their roundel without the horizontal bar. On the wings the normal roundel is still used.

Will this be a permanent change?

Anyone know what those big unshrouded engine exhausts do for it’s Radar CC and IR signature?

While I have no doubt Israel can hit some of Iran’s nuclear facilities (I reckon they could get around 60% of them over 5 days or so, but a land invasion would be needed to get 100% of them, along with the 100’s of nuclear scientists and engineers) and Israel obviously has the better aircraft and ECM, and Iran could cause mischief in retaliation, surely the most likely consequence of what would have to be a public multi-day raid which would be in effect a declaration of war, would be for Russia and China to agree to supply better weapons to Iran. If that is the case then the raids would certainly backfire if after the raid you suddenly have Russia agreeing to supply S-300’s and China to supply JF-17 and other equipment.

No expert, but the nuclear facilities seem to be a tough nut to crack…

what about using airstrikes and commando raids (the thing the Israelis seem to be best at) in a coup de main to emasculate the regime – take out their most important naval assets, missile sites, air force and other prestige military assets to bring them to the de-nuking table.

Gun camera footage of splashed F-14s and SAM sites going up in puffs of smoke would make a statement, pre-empt any major retaliatory strikes and make follow-up strikes easier.

China and Russia would be unlikely to intervene (initially at least) and the other Gulf States would be gleefully rubbing their hands (secretly perhaps).

this could be another branch on the family tree.i think claude had a brother called frederick william wade 1892. i have claude as been born in smethwick (kings norton).also found a record of a elizabeth wade died 21 dec 1940 aged 51 wife of william wade of 20 blackstock gardens vauxhall road died at blackstock gardens shelter.cheers

CWGC has slightly different address, maybe you know which is corect?
Name: WADE, ELIZABETH. Age: 51. Date of Death: 21/12/1940
Additional information: Wife of William Wade, of 2C Blackstock Gardens, Vauxhall Road. Died at Blackstock Gardens Shelter.
Casualty Type: Civilian War Dead. Reporting Authority: LIVERPOOL, COUNTY BOROUGH.
I know L’pool was badly bombed (Dad’s family from there) but to lose 2 in a few months in different shelters, where they thought they were safe….

Probably a typo in one of those addresses. Blackstock Gardens was the the big communal shelter where a lot of people died I think.

Mary Wade definitely died in the Grant Road house – my Dad was taken there by my Gran the next day (The Grants were related to my Father’s family and not my mums as I mistakenly posted above)….. he vaguely recalls a big pile of rubble and a few sombre souls and wondering why he’d been taken there!!

Long before my time but rings a bell somehow – must have glimpsed something about it before.

A very moving article I thought. From an era when the relatives were left to fend for themselves after such events (if the docu I watched on Discovery the other night is anything to go by).

Argueing about history is rather like shouting at the TV.:diablo:

Best comment so far 🙂 but I’ll give it a try…

Comparing Wallace to von Braun and British concentration camps to German mass extermination camps is like comparing oranges to space shuttles – designed to do different things even if the results are sometimes the same.

The Germans have undoubtedly set the pace in the two twentieth century global conflicts. In WWI, the first use of poison gas, first aerial bombing of civilians, Lusitania. They got a head start on WWII at Guernica and used that experience on Rotterdam, London, and all the rest. God knows how much worse it could have been if they’d had a successful strategic bomber design.

At least Harris was ‘sporting’ enough to warn them what to expect in return – before the large scale bombing started. I don’t think Harris and Bomber Command or even the war leaders have a case to answer. I’m sorry, Dresden was as legitimate as Warsaw – I’m not aware of it being a particular centre for anti-nazi resistance and right-minded Germans.

Now, here’s a notion (I’m playing devil’s advocate here so don’t take it that these are my beliefs) but what if the strategic bombing campaign was designed not to be too concerned about civilian casualties?

It worked didn’t it? They haven’t done it again…

The anti-war mindset of Gotterdammerung is so deeply entrenched in the German psyche that Western Europe has known peace for 65 years – unheard of in recorded history. A return to arms and jealous glances West and East seems unthinkable.

Same thing in Japan – from Pearl Harbour and Bataan to ground zero to peace-minded, robot & My Kitty obsessed chill-axers in a generation.

Thousands died so that millions were saved – is that justification enough?

Please feel free to discuss, shoot back or tear me a new one for going O/T!

Don’t suppose they can replicate the USS Intrepid experience with Invincible or Ark Royal on the Thames?

A tourist attraction to showcase the best of British engineering right in the heart of the capital… no, that’s just a crazee idea.
