There is no point in investing that amount in a rusting bit of steel cruiser or what ever.

They are better off buying 4 new frigate with long service life.

That thing will last till 2035 – 2045 if they want it to. Look at other ships in the USN! Lumping the S-400 onto it would be a hell of a good experience for the new-gen destroyer too.

BTW dionis I’m getting impatient for 22350 details.:D Isn’t the radar on the foremast a 4-planar phased array?

I’ll try to look for them, don’t expect anything glorious. Like I said, snake65 may have details off the top of his head.

$1 billion for a modernized cruiser is pocket change, I don’t know what either of you is smoking.

The RuN needs platforms to carry long range SAMs, and this is it. Ability to pack a supersonic anti-ship punch, that is modernized, is great too.

I thought the terms being thrown around in the media report were just wild speculations(Nuclear reactors? Steam catapults?) but I didn’t want to be impolite.:o But seriously, aside from an overhaul of her boilers and an upgrade to the Radar/SAM complex I don’t see any major changes happening.

Steam catapults are useless IMO. Stress on aircraft, and little real use except to get something like a prop AWACS into the air.

Nuclear reactors would be nice, but we’ll see if the modernization is that “deep.”

Removal of Shipwrecks may or may not be a good idea – I haven’t decided. Having a vessel packing heavy missile firepower is never a bad thing. (It’s like having an additional Kirov or Oscar II in your battle group).

What about the radar? Has the Russian navy finally moved beyond the MR-7xx Fregat variants that have been seen on virtually every major surface ship for the past few decades?

Fregat radars are solid pieces of equipment. They are like the SPY series – undergoing constant upgrades for future vessels from what I understand.

    Hello.

Are there any updates on the planned refit of the Admiral Kuznetsov? I’d like to know some concrete details on the supposed upgrades.

No concrete details yet. All rumors – typical crap is told. New electronics, new defense missiles, maybe new propulsion.

I’m rather interested in the Russian next generation frigate. Assuming that diagram is accurate this ship won’t have any of the familiar Russian radars like MR-7xx(Top Plate) or Podberezovik. Has any information been released on its weapons and sensor suite?

Snake65 might have details on hand, or Rodolfo. I’ll see if I can find the info, I had seen it somewhere.

I think some of the SAM armament is still up for changes though – some say it will be the new BUK SAM modeifications — some say it will be the 9M96/D with active homing.

It would make no sense to seek Indian funding for the project if they still had to spend their own money on every aspect. Anyway, even some of the Russian news channels are reporting that HAL will develop the Mission Computer, FBW and navigation systems.

They could have sent those for testing on the Su-47, assuming they were made in India.

Also, the funding might have been just to lighten the R&D load for Russia. The Russians basically used Indian money to do their own thing, and so they could later share the tech for the FGFA.

Otherwise it makes no sense, and the Su-47 tested technology for absolutely nothing that is going to be used.

The Berkut had neither the Irbis, nor the PAK FA’s radar.

I didn’t mention radar. Avionics include more than that, I hope you are aware.

FBW system, EW and MWS, the fancy new autopilot potentially, etc.

Wasn’t the Su-37 Berkut a sort of technology demonstrator for the PAK-FA? That’s what I heard at the time, but this prototype looks nothing like it.

Probably because it was testing internal systems. Potentially all of the autopilot and avionics features which are touted as being a “big thing” in the Su-35S and PAK-FA.

How to win in the missile race [22]

Alex Hazbiev, editor of the infrastructure sectors of the journal “Expert”

By 2012 Russia will be created and adopted almost a dozen new types of aircraft missiles and bombs corrected by twice the range of superior U.S. counterparts. But to keep the lead, we need to accelerate the development of fundamentally new – hypersonic weapons of destruction, which now are betting the U.S.
KTRV CEO Boris Obnossov in the next two years, intends to complete the test 14 types of new missiles and bombs corrected

The desire for total elimination of strategic missiles and warheads, fixed in the new US-Russian START-3, would inevitably lead to the fact that the role and importance of conventional weapons will increase sharply in the near future. But if our arsenal of strategic weapons, we can actually talk on equal terms with the Americans, in the field of conventional arms about any parity can not be and speeches. For example, modern fighter planes we have about 15 times less than in the U.S. and, say, surface ships far less than the oceanic area is almost 20 times. This means that in a “global nuclear scratch” Russia will have nothing to oppose its potential adversaries. And it’s not the quality of our tactical weapons, and their number. If the Americans over the past ten years alone, bombs have bought more than one hundred thousand, our army over this period has bought air attack weapons for just one day of war. And this is despite the fact that new Russian missiles, as it turns out, nothing worse than American, but for a number of characteristics even better. Their designs and manufactures corporation Tactical Missiles (KTRV). This is one of the most secretive holdings in the Russian defense industry. Established eight years ago, in the reform of the Russian defense industry, he now includes almost two dozen various businesses, factories and design bureaus involved in the creation of managed funds destruction by air, land and sea-based. How is the development of new missiles and torpedoes, than they differ from U.S. counterparts, why we should fear China and in what direction Russia must develop aircraft rocket, in an interview to “Expert” said CEO KTRV Boris Obnossov.

    – In early February, the company of Sukhoi began flight tests of long-term aviation complex tactical aircraft (PAK FA), known to the public as the fifth-generation fighter. What kind of weapons for this aircraft makes KTRV?

    – The system of arms, PAK FA will include only new models of aircraft operated means of destruction. This missile air-to-air missiles, tactical and operational-tactical missiles air-to-surface “general-purpose, specialized confusional and anti-ship missiles and guided bombs.

The main requirements placed on these weapons – vnutrifyuzelyazhnyh accommodation. And of course, increased range, noise immunity and accuracy. That is, those characteristics that make it possible to successfully solve a variety of combat missions. For example, the destruction of radar stations without entering the zone of enemy air defense.

    – Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin promised that the first production of fifth generation fighter aircraft entered service in Lipetsk Center Air Force already in 2013. You have by this time have gone to do anything?

    – We are completing a series of developmental works and in the next two years will come to the final state tests of fourteen types of new missiles and corrected air bombs (KAB). They cover almost the whole range of air attack weapons, including missiles to air-to-air long range. Some appear in the next year, some next year. Moreover, the new missiles for the fifth generation fighter would be unified with other carriers – Su-34, Su-35 and MiG-35. I must say that this is quite an impressive list of weapons. Nevertheless, I think we have successfully coped with the task.

    – What are the new missiles will be different from its predecessors?

    – Yes, almost everything. It is a fundamentally new models of precision weapons. Despite the fact that many of them retained the external shape of its predecessors, inside they have a much better system than those that are installed on the fourth-generation fighters. This new seeker, having high sensitivity to detect goals and better noise immunity, and the new combined rocket-ramjet engine with adjustable parameters (for supersonic missiles, air-to-surface “), new combat units, fuses, intellectual support and much more. With all these systems, tactical and technical characteristics of the new weapons will increase significantly. For the first time in the history of aviation development of guided weapons at the time of a new missile launch does not see the purpose and must find it in the process of autonomous flight.

If we take this criterion as a range, then this indicator new missiles twice surpass those that are now in service. We have all weapons air-to-air missile is divided into three types – small, medium and long range. Now a small range – it is 40 kilometers, and, for example, the average – up to 100 kilometers. So, exaggerating, we can say that the goals are now affects the medium-range missiles, we will marvel at the small arms range.

    – And what would be the radius of the new missiles, air-to-air long range?

    – Numbers to call I will not. I can only say that it is very large. To date, this range not a single aircraft missiles of this class.

    – Let’s your new missiles oppose American counterparts, who are armed with the fifth-generation fighter F-22 Raptor and F-35. In whose favor would be a comparison of?

    – In general, with the U.S. we continue to parity. American F-22 and F-35 armed with missiles, air-to-air ยปAIM-9X Sidewinder short-range missiles, and various modifications AMRAAM AIM-120 medium range. Our new missiles RVV-MD and RVV-SD (respectively, small and medium-range) is virtually nothing they do not concede, and on some characteristics are even superior. For example, the firing range RVV-MD almost twice higher than that of AIM-9X. The Russian rocket is equipped with an advanced thermal homing head. As the sensitivity is identical to the U.S., according to noise immunity, they are comparable. This missile is designed not only for fighters and ground attack, but also for combat helicopters. As for medium-range weapons, that our missile firing range of about 10 percent more. The rest of Russian missiles of this type have almost the same characteristics as the U.S.. So I have full confidence that we are not lost.

    – In air-to-surface missiles?

    – There the Americans main confusional missile – AGM-88 HARM, capable of striking targets at a distance 80 kilometers, while developing the rate close to 3 Mach (three speed of sound. – The “Expert”). If you compare it with our new confusional missile Kh-31PD, then all other things being equal military capabilities of Russian missiles than the American counterpart in range of three-fold. This was achieved thanks to a new ramjet. Energy consumption it is somewhere in the two and a half times more economical than its predecessor. This allows not only to increase the range, but also to implement more complex schemes of flight. In particular, the X-31PD must successfully withstand a duel battles against air defense Patriot.
New supersonic tactical missile X-31PD superior American counterpart on the range of three times

New supersonic tactical missile X-31PD than American counterpart in range of three times

    Photo: ITAR-TASS

In addition, air-to-surface missiles, we have two new missiles – Kh-38ME and X-58USHKE. The first module type. I think this is a unique multi-purpose missile. It can be fitted with a combined guidance systems – laser, thermal, radar type or satellite navigation. A second rocket – the X-58USHKE – fitted (as X-31PD) wide-range passive homing, which provide the capture of radar targets, which is also very important. Until now, our missiles were so-called selective heads, each of which is captured only one type of goal (the frequency spectrum), which caused some inconvenience, since the wing had to hang three or four of the same type missiles, if it is supposed to act on several types of goals .

    – These missiles will arm the new fighter aircraft, designed for the Air Force. But as things stand with anti-missiles for naval aircraft?

    – Here we are at the final stage of the creation of two new types of missiles – tactical supersonic Kh-31AD and subsonic Kh-35UE. It will be completely digital rocket that will provide them a better relationship with the board and increase range of tasks. Unlike its predecessor range of new missiles will increase at least twice. The mass of the warhead X-31AD increase by 15 percent.

Well, we can not say about if it had. There is much that we can oppose our potential competitors. Now we complete the creation of a whole new series of guided bombs weighing 1500 and 500 kilograms, as well as a smaller size, with increased range and new systems of satellite and laser guidance. They are intended for the destruction of various ground and surface targets including bridges, ships, transport ships, infrastructure and so on.

I believe that if it had – a very important weapon to be installed on all versions of the fifth generation fighter. First of all, because after the destruction of enemy air defense system on its territory, finishing off just using Kabova. For example, Americans over the past ten years for its operations in Iraq and Afghanistan have bought more than one hundred thousand corrected bombs.

    – What is the direction of the aircraft rocket you consider most promising?

    – All the recent wars involving the United States have shown that the main reliance is placed on the use of precision weapons. In 1991 during Operation Desert Storm in Iraq, the proportion of high-precision weapons accounted for seven percent, eight years later in Yugoslavia, it has already reached 70 percent. I think that this trend will be further developed. And we must be ready for this. Say what you like, but our country is not as big as before, and its population is rapidly decreasing. And if we, God forbid, have to take someone seriously fight, it is best that it was not “hot” contact.

    – It seems that the leadership of the Pentagon’s addicted to the concept of so-called smart war. Americans have already conducted several tests of hypersonic aircraft. This is the future of aviation rocketry?

    – Certainly. I believe that the development of missiles capable of flying at speeds of 10-12 times the speed of sound – the most promising direction of development of air armaments. Without a doubt, this breakthrough project – the quintessence of the whole development of missile technologies. This will apply the new engines, new materials and new avionics. Such a project for its significance is comparable with the launch of the first satellite, or with the development of near-Earth space in the fifties-sixties. For the sake of solving this problem should be focused all the resources of the state, including intellectual.

    – What, in fact, is a technological breakthrough?

    – In fact, the autonomous flight hypersonic speed – a very difficult task. Hypersound – is at least 5 Makhov. Our missile Kh-31 in some cases reached a speed of Mach 4, but no more. But to build a minimal hypersonic speed, need a new combined power plant is able to operate at subsonic, and at high supersonic speeds. We now have a ram jet engine, which works fine at supersonic speeds. Here we are on a par with advanced countries. But to get ahead and achieve high speeds required to ensure the supersonic combustion of fuel in such a ramjet engine. Well, or create another new engine. That’s the challenge and the designers have to decide. But that’s not all. At speeds above 7 Makhov dramatically increases impact on avionics, formed plasma ionization, the fairing is heated to unimaginable temperatures. But it should ensure transparency for the radar homing. Accordingly, we need new materials, innovative design solutions. That is necessary to use the full range of new developments, which today is in the aerospace industry. However, I am sure that this problem sooner or later will be solved.

    – As far as I know, the development of hypersonic aircraft weapons in our country, and in the U.S. are long, but, generally speaking, there is nothing to brag …

    – In the U.S., serious work began in the eighties. If I’m not mistaken, in 1982, they have in the NASA program was launched National Aero-Space Plane (NASP) for the creation of hypersonic technology. She has over 60 routines that cover all key areas – aerodynamics, engines, avionics, fuel and so on. Incidentally, it is within the NASP is widely used nano. As a result, Americans have already switched to the testing stage.

    – And we?

    – We have such work was carried out in the early seventies, and even created their prototypes. But then, in the nineties, as you know, this whole thing was buried. First of all, because the continuation of the work required a very large investment. But now things have changed, there are positive developments. This topic is substantively discussed at the Military-Industrial Commission. We won the corresponding tender and are now actively engaged in production of a prototype. I hope that in the next two years will have the first results. Nothing more to say, I’m afraid babble.

    – In addition to rockets and bombs Your Corporation develops and produces a fairly wide spectrum of naval ordnance. How is cooperation KTRV with our Navy?

    – We proposed Navy Commander Vladimir Vysotsky to develop and adopt a comprehensive program of forming marine means of destruction. It clearly should be linked to timing of production of new ships and weapons of destruction to them. And then we often happens that there is a new torpedo and submarine, which they should be tested, still stands in the dock. Their achievements we have presented, I think this issue can be resolved in working order soon.

    – What new weapons to the Navy is developing KTRV?

    – First of all, it torpedoes, including large diameter (over 500 millimeters). They make Moscow enterprise “Region”, which is part of our corporation. This is the prime contractor for the Sea underwater weapons. It accounts for approximately 60 percent of all development works carried out on this subject through the Navy, and about 48 percent of production. We are currently completing testing of the system ASW complex “package” -E/NK, which includes new torpedoes and protivotorpedy to protect the vessel from submarines. This system allows, on the one hand, to parry the attack of the enemy and secure the ship and on the other – to deliver an effective counterattack. In addition, we continue to work on torpedoes “Squall”, which can move under water at a speed of 100 meters per second. This is the most formidable naval weapon, which was established in the USSR. And I am glad that we have this topic now revive.

    – Last year, in the midst of crisis, KTRV could boost sales and increase revenue to 31,3 billion rubles. How does it happen?

    – Oh, just lucky! But seriously speaking, then, of course, we very much helped the state order (in the air attack for the Su-34 and Su-35 a total cost of 6 billion rubles. – “Expert”). Its profitability compared with the export contracts is small, only a few percent. Therefore, the revenue growth in our net profit fell in half. Nevertheless, it is the state order in conjunction with export contracts ensures the progressive development of our corporation. The potential of the domestic market is huge. I am pleased to be selling a lot more weapons inside the country.

    Better Avionics = F-22
    Better Stealth = F-22
    Better Situational Awarness = F-22
    Better Pilots = F-22
    Better Radar = F-22
    Better EW = F-22
    Better Missiles = F-22
Better Manuverability = PAK FA (allegedly)
Better Price (cheaper) = PAK FA

Don’t get me wrong. The Russians built a decent aircraft that can compete with a Rafale or Eurofighter but it cant hope to match the Raptor. The US lead is far too big in virtually all areas. We were 20 years ahead in 1990 and 30+ years ahead now. G-d bless USA and our number one ally Israel

I’m afraid to ask but, What options is there when you realize your bladder won’t take it 2 more hours as the mission dictate ?

Bladder isn’t the issue. Some flight suits come with “pissers” where you’ve got a pipe / tank attached to your goods.

The Hershey Highway issue is a whole separate matter.

    Thanks for posting this.

It would suggest that they considered a conventional S-duct but have decided against it??

Also, according to the drawing the Pak Fa carries 6 MR missiles (2 x 3).

The drawing is pretty crap accuracy wise. Old, probably that’s why it’s inaccurate. MLG storage is in the wing root, not in the weapons bay.

Without the related details a questionable info.
Russia has no wings, just squadrons and the flight is from West to East the Jetstram in mind. No details about the ETs carried. A great achievement under test-condition but no real combat value. At least we got the info that the Su-34 will have double the range capability of the Su-24 without air-refuelling. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Only the typical garbage you could expect from Sens.

The combat value in this is the ability to quickly move forces from one place to another – over great distances.
