The system seems to have started life as a weapon to protect fixed targets, but evolved into a mobile system intended to cope with tactical threats. Its target set now includes cruise and anti-radiation missiles, UAVs, precision-guided weapons and even moving ground targets.

But like all mobile SAM systems, it will itself be a high-priority target for attack, so may have to spend a lot of time and ammo/missiles in self-defence.

There’s no way to find this thing at range. If you are close enough to use SAR, you’re probably long dead – so – that’s mutually exclusive 😉

Shove in some TOR-M2s and friendly AWACS, EWLRS and fighter support – and you’ve got a hell of a defense.

So how does the “chief designer” know what the RCS of the F-22 is in order to make his statement?

The position that he is in and the kind of capability that US and Russia possess ( SVR/CIA/NSA ) to keep a close watch on each other , knowing each other capability does not need divine intervention.

Do you think the US estb wouldnt have bothered over the years to figure out whats going on the other side and vice verse and PAK-FA would have been a capability surprise to Pentagon ?

Or the chief designer had his engineers do model analysis and predict the RCS. It’s not like any of this is exact – ballpark figures exist. I would be surprised if the LM or Sukhoi designers know the EXACT figure of their aircraft. The angles of radar beam themselves could never be perfect anyway.

Why? I couldn’t care less about PAK-FA (it’s turned out to be even less than I expected) and the Russian tanker thing is pure comedy. Now if you want me to burst a blood vessel just start talking about Zero. 😉

What would you know about what the PAK-FA turned out to be anyway?

They should make the PAK-FA capable of carrying 1 Kh-32 😀

I doubt it so, western countries have traditionally superior A2G sensors even targeting pods. There is a reason why Su 34 uses Democles.

Its unlikely that the PAK FA will have an EOTS equivalent.

What the hell does it need any of that for?

For known, stationary targets likely to be hit during Day 1, GLONASS or TV guided bombs will do the job. Guidance for those is no issue.

The Su-34 uses an on board UOMZ targeting system too, which is home made.

Again Russia has more assets than IAF. Russia for example I think has not really woken up to the multi-role game except for export orders. They have a big arsenal of dedicated A2G aircraft like the Su 24, Su 25, Su 34 and also heavy and medium bombers. Hence PAK FA will primarily fulfill the Air Superiority role in the RuAF for that single seater is enough.

The PAK-FA will still be a “Day 1” strike platform.

There’s really no evidence to suggest that the F-35 is going to have better A2G sensors, especially in the overall-package sense.

That’s a fair observation. From what i’ve read abd seen on video of the F-35, it probably has the edge in terms of its on-board sensors.

The Russians seems to think that 1 seat is enough.

Klinok will do a lot of good against an F-18 that can drop a bomb on that Udaloy from 60nm out without a second thought.

You might as well not bother carrying any missiles at all.

Good thing Klinok can engage PGMs.

Curious though, what “bomb” would that be anyway?

Udaloy’s arent armed with Shtil, they are armed with Klinok or “garbage.”

So TOR is garbage eh? Gotta take it easy on the drugs, buddy.

Anyway, Udaloy and Sovremenny use Shtil SAM systems. Not “weak” but short.

That’s the only concern I have too. Uragan is a pure VLS system? Wonder if they could add boosters to the missiles . . . ?

    22350 will have 9M96

    Where’s the evidence of this?!

All things online point to the naval BUK-M “Uragan”

    On the Gorshkov class “frigates”

Their SAM system is a little weak for a real destroyer punch. They should have loaded them with 9M96 missiles. That would have been a hell of a lot more “destroyer-like” 😉

Not really. IF (big if, since it’s not a navy project) ever built, it would likely mix 5×8 (40) long range sam with 1 x 32 medium range SAM, which is similar to contemporary westen large frigates and destroyers. 2×8 SSM isn’t shocking (compare SK Arleigh Burke variant). Carriage of Skval makes no sense on this ship and is likely BS.

Harpoon is treated with a 1/2 ratio to a Klub or especially a Yakhont type missile. 😉

And what is “not a navy project” supposed to mean?

This ship was announced in Summer 2009.
