I dont think money is an issue here , than proven experience with 3D Circular Nozzle and Philosophy/Approach.

The Russian has given priority to Super Agility by going for 3D Nozzle and Control surfaces on the design over all aspect stealth. ( it still has good frontal stealth )

This will work great in dog fight/BVR even against say F-22 , but this will be a nightmare when penetrating a dense SAM environment , where the conventional Aft and lower aft fuselage will betray its presence to ground based radar operatring in different bands.

I still think with 2D Nozzle the PAK-FA maneuverability/agility will be as good as say the MKI , but it will gain a lot of ground on LO and all aspect stealth

May be some one who is a jurno here can put this question to Sukhoi folks on the trade off gained by such approach.

The Su-30MKI is more sluggish than the Su-35 and PAK-FA by a fair margin. The AL-31 on the Su-30MKI might have 2D TVC, but it does not have improved thrust. In this manner, the Su-27SM has better “line” agility (thanks to the AL-31FM2), while the Su-35 and PAK-FA are quite a bit superior in overall agility.

Sacrificing rear stealth is hardly a compromise, as once the PAK-FA runs away, most weapons won’t be able to catch up unless it was running from a dogfight.

The real question is where the hell is Severodvinsk? The thing was supposed to be doing trials already!

Do you guys think that the external pod will affect RCS even if had enough RAM treatment?
Also, another issue is that how will it affect maneuverability? Since in the picture show that it will store the short range AAMs for WVR so the pilot can not cut them loose to prepare for dogfight.
I think that the weapon bay in the drawing is also too shallow since the bay should be able to accommodate long range AAMs, or KH-58 for anti ship purpose.

Look at this picture from paralay:
    http://paralay.iboards.ru/download/file.php?id=9475&mode=view
Do you think that the outer diameter of the engine on Su-27 and PAK-FA is the same? I think the one on PAK-FA looks bigger or is it just the size of picture is deceptive or PAK-FA looks shorter therefore its engines look fatter?

The engine nozzle size changes with thrust – so who knows? Almost impossible to accurately assess.

Ahhhhhrrrrgggg…! True! The MiG-31M can carry 6x R-37. My mind was on the older MiG-31 carrying 4x R-33. Still 4 R-33/R-37 type missiles internally is impressive (assuming the T-50 bays are the same as the S-37 bay). T-50 is required to carry large A-to-G munitions internally (Kh-38, Kh-58 and IIRC KAB-1500, kh-31 etc). Would be interesting to the the arrangements..

The Kh-31 is most certainly not going to be covered.

The Kh-58USHKE will fulfill this roll, which would include anti-ship strike on an emitting vessel.

KAB-1500 I’m not sure, I haven’t seen a length published for the weapon.

AFAIK the Foxhound could carry six R-37s.

The MiG-31M, not the MiG-31B or BM.

    How so dionis?
If the weapons bay on the T-50 are wider vs F-22A weapons bays, they may not be as deep thought..

Personally i think 8 AAM(depending on the missile type!) are a bit optimistic and if this stick with the series prod. It will be impressive indeed.

Just remember the required internal fuel fraction on that bird.;)
Its always trade-off in the big picture here.

    Thanks

    The F-22 is what, 8 A2A missiles? (6 AIM-120Cs and 2x Sidewinders?)

I feel like with folding fin missiles, if you try hard enough you can really cram a lot of them together.

8 AAM for the PAK-FA would be pretty disappointing considering two weapons bays.

Nah, I don’t quite buy the sudden ‘either stealth or dead’ stance. I think we will see more SAM producers shifting to different frequency bands soon, evenm at the cost of less efficient penetration through the atmosphere.

What do you expect from the American camp?

The Su-34 is supposed to have pretty significant RCS reduction features applicable to a Flanker airframe.

I don’t give APA much credibility. Their analyses tned to be driven by their biases and vested interests. They have zero access to official data on either the F-35 or F-22 and rely on whatever speculative reports exist in the public domain but don’t hesitate to make sweeping and authoritative conclusions based on such.

Ah yes, but the KeyPub star analysts would never do that?

    so.

    1. what things do you expect the Mig-35 being able to do that the Super Hornet and Rafale currently can do?

The MiG-29K only lacks AESA – that’s about it.

    What things? Let’s see:

    1) Equal Air Defense / CAP
    2) Anti-shipping / anti-radiation attacks superior to the the Rafale / F-18E through the use of the Kh-31AD/PD.
    3) Equal air-to-ground strikes through short range missiles (Kh-29, Kh-38) and KAB L/K/S series bombs.

    2. you saying because the K is built off the Mig-29 M, then it can be brought to MiG-35 standards? so thus the MiG-35 is not a new airframe but based on an old one?

Does the MiG-35 looks like a new airplane to you?

probably not good enough. it solves some of the problems of the standard MiG-29A, like bad range, limited roles.. yet its improvements do not give it capabilities beyond what the Rafale or F-18E can currently do. More closer to the F-18C/D at best. Thats why the Indian Navy is already asking for bids for new naval fighters, of which MiG is not invited.

Bringing the MiG-29K to “MiG-35” standards will let it do anything the Super Hornet or Rafale can do.

Condidering the “K” is built off of the MiG-29M, I’d assume it would not take too much work.

With the processing power these days, wouldn’t it be possible to fit some sort of CIWS system into fighter aircraft where several low-caliber multi-barrel guns would be used to shoot down incoming missiles?

Use a system similar to the Northrop Grumman’s AN/AAQ-37 DAS – that would guide several automatic guns that would shootdown nearby missiles.

Useless thread. Better close it and take this talk to the Saga thread.

acutally they would be quite useful in the Pacific Fleet esepcially during monsoon season

Perhaps, but I see no real value for the Northern Fleet.

    —–

Anyone here care to justify their opinions for “no-go” for Baltic / Black Sea fleet? Helicopters would be good support for close-range beach assaults.

What is their value in the Northern Fleet? (I see some value for the Pacific).

Meh, if the Russian Navy has the budget, then why not.

This thing will be useless in the Pacific and Northern Fleet.

Might want a few in the Baltic and Black Sea. . .

Any news on fleet deployment planned? Black Sea for sure, others?
