Blast. I hate repeating things … there was nothing there a moment ago… I must try three finger typing!
The Times archive for this event has a report of the inquest held in January.
The Pilot stated that he was barely able to operate the lever to eject. The coroner concluded that the other crew were unable to do so because of the
steep descent and G forces . There seems to be no further court of inquiry, and no blame for the pilot
“RAF commission terminated”……. Google that and you get a pdf document that mentions “Was your Commission terminated for misconduct”.
It may help in working through the levels of military judiciary at that time.
Looking at Courts Martial reports in the Times over the years , most seem to involve “doubtfull behaviour” or dodgy mess cheques.
Sorry no pictures, but maybe those massed squadron snaps in pathe etc might show an image. A magnifying glass might help.
Eurofighter today.
Rather surprised while waiting at the lights near Finsbury Park (North London) at noon today, we heard an executive jet type whine, and noticed a single Eurofighter passing over. It was about police helicopter height and looked just like a model kit. It seemed a bit lonely, normally if there is some flypast there are some others following on their way home. The lunchtime news reported the flypast as a medal ceremony.
PS
The note on the slide of the Catalina shows the place as Barakewa ,also the croc catch was there. I think from the slide listings the Beaver and rig blowout were at Kuru, perhaps a smaller river . I should have listened more when my Dad
had his slideshows!!!!
PPS as for the elder young man in shorts… you should see him now.:diablo:
Did you mean elder young man in “shorts”.?
‘Twas my brother Tony , to and from the Uk to a prep school in Yorkshire. At the time England was barely out of rationing. I was living the life at Ela Beach primary school…

Short slide show of Port Morseby including a few of the Beaver and some Catalinas in the harbour and upriver.
Glad to know the shots of seaplanes in PNG were interesting. I have often thought these old family cine films should have an outlet. Glad to use utube!
I also transferred by way of a handheld slide viewer and a video camera a batch of 35mm slides. (I had just bought an ultra slim cannon scanner with no slide adaptor facility) and proper slide scanners are still pricey…so the image is fairly poor… anyway. I have some other views of the Beaver and the Catalina which I will post as a slide show. And Jackson’s Strip too.
This is still aviation themed.
Any takers for “anthropoligacal” utubes . Lakatois,Koki, Kurdistan, Buiks, etc????
Dad filmed this on a trip into the Jungle, He worked at Port Moresby for BP looking for oil, (and they found gas).He had to take a Catalina , then a riverplane then a helicopter.
This is the helicopter bit.
Jackson’s Strip in 1958.

Seaplanes and river planes to follow. This is fun
Good. Surely a case for keeping the cameras batteried up.
Next up a 50 year old cine of flight in Papua New Guinea. Catalina etc. My dads film
Christopher.
This from 2006. The last display in RAF service.

As you might imagine these just appeared over the trees with only a short rumble to say they were coming. They went over about six times.
Must have been. Quite a show for all those along the river. Far better backgrounds for a snap than my back garden!.
Still for what is a commercial enterprise it may be a bit reckless for a craft with a slightly iffy history to have been joyriding over my home blah blah blah……
As for quiet in “fixed wing” flight it was far quieter than the police copters and DHL jobs that are always overhead. In fact it was quite cuddly! (If that’s possible for a warplane)
