Thought I remembered one, but a little digging find that it was neither Guinness, nor aerobatic!

Well, I knew it wasn’t aerobatic, because it was a special scheme on a Ryanair Boeing 737-200. In fact EI-CNY was promoting the ‘Kilkenny’ brand and painted in dark brown and cream representing a half poured glass of Irish Stout, but not a ‘Guinness ‘. Time period would be at least early 1998 until a /c sold late 2005.

Not too many aircraft have been in promotional scheme for drinks manufacturers, one I do clearly recall was half a Concorde in Pepsi blue.

Well that wasted half an hour chasing a total research ‘red herring’… and now it is too late for a drink!

I agree that a wing walker Stearman rings a slight bell in the fading grey cells, though it must have been quite short-lived in a promotional scheme.

Interesting. I had not thought much beyond the initial nationality prefix. As stated three numbers gives 999 combinations, four numbers 9999 combinations, three letters 25x25x25 (due no Q), which is proving sufficient for most island registers eg Malta after some 45 years of 9H-, or the Republic of Ireland with 90 years of EI-. As Guernsey have a purely numeric registration system for their cars, with no letters involved (or at least did when I was last on the Island), I did rather assume a 2-1234 style registration for their aircraft before I considered the matter further. Am I right in thinking that no other Nation has a purely numerical, prefix and suffix, civil aircraft register (yet)? Indeed has any Nation (outside of USA, China, Japan or former Soviet States) ever used numbers in their registration beyond the Nationality prefix? It would appear that Guernsey will be the first civil register with just a number prefix, not alphabetic or alpha-numeric, so already is a departure from any previous ‘rule’.

I am certain that somebody, with global authority, sets the ‘rules’ for aviation registrations (who, FAI, BV, UNO?). I’m assuming that Jersey and Guernsey, like the Isle of Man and all other West European States will have a total of 5 alpha-numeric digits in the registration, but is this international law, or just a convention that everyone abides by except the USA, Japan, China and former Soviet States?

This thread has caused me to pause and consider a topic I always have taken for granted given the extremely orderly state of civil aircraft markings on a global scale since not that long after aviation got going! No doubt someone will direct me to wikipedia – suppose I should have started there, but this post developed as I typed, it is a bit of a Sunday morning ramble!

    Peppermint Jam,

Interesting site, but what exactly am I looking for? Which aircraft am I being directed toward, as I cannot find ‘Sandtoft Aerodrome’ in the listing, no matter how many times I look through.

However, hopefully someone will be along shortly with an informed answer. I can recall a time, some while ago that there were a number of older RAF aircraft types at Sandtoft in storage eg Vampire, Jet Provost and even a Gannet ( I think), but don’t recall a Lightning, so am as little real help as the post above.

What is required here is not the predictable quip but someone with either (or both) ‘Presentation Aircraft’ Air Britain Historians, or ‘Spitfire’ by Key Press. Both rather expensive tomes when published, I obtained neither, but wish I had – then I could answer the question with authority.

Ken Ellis’s ‘Wrecks & Relics’ editions 6 through to 10, covering the late 70s to mid 80s don’t feature Market Rasen as a place name in the index. A look through all the entries in each edition for Lincolnshire county comes up with no candidates, apart from those on airfield at Scampton and Waddington and a nose briefly at Tattershall Thorpe 84-85. If anyone has a ‘W&R’ Ed.11 or 12 sitting on their bookshelves it might be worth a scan through the entries. So surprisingly, I therefore don’t come up with an answer. Sorry for the negative reply, but might stop others being frustrated looking up the same source!

My initial thought too, however the national markings on the port wing appear to be roundels rather than film ‘make-up’ German crosses.

A joint Spanish Air Force/U.S.A.F. exercise involving RF-4C aircraft from Alconbury, shortly after 10th TRW re-equipped, to me would be more likely.

    Intriguing photo though.

Sorry nothing like such a great photo as the one above, the first P-40E Kittyhawk 1A I recall in the UK was N94466/SU:E, here seen displaying at the last airport based Air Show at Liverpool in August1984, complete with (what I suspect is an American version of RAF) desert camouflage and ‘shark’s teeth’. Suspect this could be the ‘naked lady on the rudder’ scheme referred to above, but the rudder is coyly hidden on my poor photos.

Can someone PM me to tell me (or link me) how to post pictures direct from Photobucket at full size without going through thumb-nail size stage please.

This section of aircraft has also been discussed at length on: http://www.derbosoft.proboards.com/thread/11038/hs-748-procedure-trainer same detail photos, different discussion, but with some of the same participants!

A different Brian, this one from Liverpool.

While the use of the possessive apostrophe is technically erroneous, it is more than one Avro 748, but less than two! The complete, but partly dismantled Avro 748 G-BEJD under rebuild and restoration by SAHG, and Mike Davey’s considerable HS.748 cockpit and nose of G-ORAL.

The ‘flight simulator’ is located in the Jetstream 41, so that aircraft does effectively get a double billing!

I can immediately think of 5 active forumites who will be there and involved, wont state who so as not to upset anyone I miss out! As stated in the initial post should be a good day out, with the opportunity to take a very close look at the Avro 748 and Britannia restoration projects while both are still at ground level. It would appear that the event is about raising funds for the projects and highlighting the heritage of the site and the aircraft, rather than providing a family entertainment day out, as the ‘Air Fair’ was last summer.

Simply Google search the IP number yourself. If the owner of that IP is making a nuisance of themselves then there are likely a number of links.

Alpha Jet to me fits the bill. Lack of the horizontal tailplanes along with the tailcone makes it less than obvious, but the shape of the jet pipes from inlet to exhaust clinch it for me, along with the shoulder wing position.

A far from familiar view though – a nice little challenge.

My ‘Military Aircraft markings 2012’, Howard Curtis, Midland, has XT469 (8920M) Wessex HU.5 as “MSS Holdings, Kirkham, Lancs”. They also have/have had Lightning F.1A XM173/A ex Bentley Priory since 2/08 (good ‘spot’ that David Burke!).

‘Wrecks & Relics 23’ 2012, Ken Ellis, Midland, lists both XM173 and XT469 (ex Stafford) as on a private location, in the general area of Preston, Lancs in the premises of Submarine Manufacturing and Products Ltd.
