Which makes you wonder why de Havilland didn’t do something similar. When you consider how long the Beech King Air has lasted, the Dove with a couple of small turboprops might have lasted just as long.

When I was working in Kenya in the 70s, I well remember talking to one of the East African pilots (whose name I had better not mention) and he was the acceptance pilot for the last of the East African Airways aircraft. Apparently he and the Vickers pilot decided to “see what she’ll do” and had a very swift run down the South coast during which they allegedly saw Mach 1.01 in a shallow dive. I have no reason to doubt his word as he was just the sort of chap to try it.

It might seem to be a little bit over the top but the learning points from our similar incident at Duxford were as follows. Chap with extinguisher faces the exhaust side of the cowling so he can see if there is a blowback. The pilot indicates which engine he’s going to start and the “fireman” acknowledges. Engine start then follows but if it goes wrong it is surprising how quickly the flames can take hold due to the combination of dope and fabric. It’s not rocket science but well worth doing.

Thanks Duxman. I think we had the biggest “fleet” there although there may have been more Tiger Moths at one stage.

I flew in with my Airtourer along with two others. Any pictures Duxman? It was fairly sporty coming down final with quite a lot of turbulence but the nice long runway at Turweston gives you time to sort things out. I agree it’s always a friendly place to visit and the cafe does good grub at reasonable prices.

Hi DR. I agree but it does have it’s limitations as a conference venue. I always had problems telling American visitors that lunch was going to be in the “Ladies Room”. However ex Royal Air Force types always cut me off and said “I know, Ladies and Billiard Room to the left, Ante Room to the right and the Dining Room behind that”. Apparently this was the standard pattern for 1930s Messes (another word the Americans didn’t get on with!).

It’s not. Apparently the plan is to use them as “serviced” offices.

Well done. It’s good to see somebody caring for these pre-war civilian types. Will you keep us updated please?

I believe Duxford was offered an ATP (Another Technical Problem) but declined for the reasons stated in Mike J’s note. However it does seem a shame that they couldn’t find space for an Avro RJ as the launch party was held at Duxford just before the cancellation.

One of our foremost warbird pilots was a crop-sprayer in an earlier existence. Always flew an aerobatic sequence in my aircraft for the C of A renewal claiming that he wasn’t allowed to do it in his normal 767. Brilliant pilot though.

Thanks wl745. I believe the Thai Police had some Airtourers and I think one is on display at their HQ in Bangkok.

I would love to see the paperwork needed to get the Fantrainer on the British register. Out of interest are there any Airtourer/Airtrainer bits in the scrapyard? Vested interest as I have an Airtourer here in the UK.

Good heavens. I suppose the next question is “why”? The prop is mounted at an interesting angle.
