Thanks for the updates chaps. So would I be right in saying that in summary, 2 Fireflies went to Canada and are/were being restored there. 2 more went to South Africa and then on to New Zealand where one remains in store and the other Trainer is being restored in France? The possibility remains that there are 2 more still in Ethiopia/Eritrea.
See my post #17. Have you heard any more? Good showman and excellent with corporate guests.
I well remember the arrival of AP-ABO, later G-AOJH, in the late evening at Squires Gate. The story was that it had flown in from Pakistan but I think that may have been a bit of 1950s “spin”. I think Russell Whyham had bought it to supplement the two Dragons CIT and DDI but four hefty Lancastrians were a bit too much for a Fox Moth and tricky to load/unload. Mind you Giro Aviation always seemed to manage it over at Southport.
I believe it was down to heavy corrosion in the undercarriage and a lack of empathy at the time for what was basically viewed as a civil type.
It looks as though it has just had a skirmish with half a dozen “Zeros”. Tough birds these Hurricanes.
Reliably informed that it will fly in the next month or so.
Yes, the thought of how to keep it glistening!
I may be wrong, I usually am, but wasn’t there some unfavourable comment about the Invader’s display at a Scottish airshow. Something to do with a wingover at low level which hadn’t been briefed.
Got to love that smoke trail. Highly un-PC
The Vampire is in Hangar 4 near where the Varsity used to be.
Was it £5 million towards Airspace at Duxford? A degree of caring there I think.
Although not related to this Rallye I do have a story about one I flew in in Germany while I was working in Frankfurt. One of the chaps in the office ,hearing that I had a PPL, decided “Tonight ve go to Worms!”. So off we trot in his very smart Rallye and sure enough Worms appeared on the nose. I thought Hans was lining up for a circuit, as we were at about 1000 feet, but not a bit of it. About 500 meters out he announced “Now ve land” and he just stuffed the nose down. The slats were banging in and out and I’m sure his father must have been a Stuka pilot but we arrived. It was more in the controlled crash category than a landing but we walked away and the aircraft was reusable. Tough old birds but a shame about the corrosion.
Isn’t the problem with the Canberra the lack of potentially airworthy engines? Apparently each mark of Canberra had a different “mod” state on the engines.
So what would you do?
I first saw “Dark Blue World” at a showing in the old Astra cinema at Duxford. It was really atmospheric and a fitting place to watch it. The icing on the cake was that Tara (steady on Moggie) came to Duxford to do some publicity shots and a flight with Classic Wings. I was lucky enough to have a chat with her and she was absolutely charming. She was very interested in Duxford and it’s place in RAF history.
