TMN, I hope you enjoyed your wander through Ashwell. It’s an interesting village but I would say that as I live there. With regard to your Spitfire, I was working at Duxford yesterday and MH434 left mid-afternoon and hadn’t returned when I left at 1730 so my guess that is the one you saw on it’s way back.

The Varsity was still at Duxford yesterday (04/10) at 1600 if that helps

There’s a contact number on the website you quote but it does say “by appointment only” which was certainly the case last time I had business there.

Hampden, it’s actually “Westish” of Duxford if that helps.

There are interesting parallels in the classic car world. I spoke to the owner of a Jaguar D-Type and complimented him on taking the risk of racing it. “No problem” said he, “this is a replica and the real one is in my collection which you ain’t going to see”. On the other hand a well known warbird collector at North Weald does keep security tight on his hangar but displays at many shows during the season allowing people to see his collection, which seems to me to be a sensible compromise. On a much lesser scale I am quite happy to take my classic car to shows but I don’t encourage people to wander in to my garage at will.

Could it have been because it was attached to an embassy with an Air Attache?
