Walked past her on Saturday and the port outer was still feathered and on the wing. No gossip, just fact.

You’re a braver man than me XH 668, but I understand what you say. Just to put it in to perspective though, I said something similar to an Ozzie mate of mine about one of the shows last year and his response was along the lines of “You don’t know how lucky you are in the UK. We’d give our back teeth for a line up like that”. I hope it’s not just the loop, roll and fast run and break routine which must be fun for the pilots but a bit tedious for the public. How about some pyrotechnics and live cannon firing like they did at Wanaka?

Nearly with you Moggy but I’d go for the High Speed Spitfire in it’s civvie colour scheme.

A quick glance at Hugh Scanlon’s book “Winged Shell” mentions 2 Geminis on the British register. G-AMGF belonging to Shell International and G-AKHZ belonging to Shell Mex. The latter was described as having a Cream and Grey colour scheme. The Twin Comanche that followed them was silver, yellow and white but the pre-war aircraft were green and red. None of which really helps you does it?

At the risk of involving some thread creep, does anybody remember another jet-powered waterspeed record challenger called, I think, The White Hart. I was staying in Bowness with my parents when it hit the wake of a ferry on a trial run on Lake Windermere and sank but bobbed up again and the crew of two were rescued. Must have been around 1954 or so. If it’s stillaround it might make another exhibit for a water speed record museum perhaps.

Ex-USAF chap in the AAM at Duxford said the ECM F-111 was called the “Sparkvark” by those in the know.

Thanks LaHavre. Presumably it was the Thunder Mustang. Very convincing replica.

My decaying memory has an inkling that there may be some remnants at Blackbushe?

Great shots Mike. I was there a couple of weeks ago but couldn’t time it right for the show. One question. Whose P-51 is it in the first batch of photos? It almost looks like a Reno Racer in that colour scheme.

Thanks “low and slow” I was fairly sure I had seen one in RAF colours in the recent past. I think your photo was taken at a fly-in at North Weald and the other Ercoupe in the picture may have been Belgian-registered. The memory fades!

I think the RAF were looking at it as a basic trainer. I suppose the Chipmunk got the contract?

I’m by no means an expert on this subject but the Royal Air Force had one on trial as a basic trainer. I seem to remember it was serialled VX 147 and was silver all over with RAF roundels. I believe it was rejected as being too easy to fly. There was one flying in the UK a couple of year’s ago in this colour scheme but whether it was the original I don’t know. I hope this helps.

I was looking at the Sabre engine on display at Duxford last time I was there and I was amazed at the technology involved for the time of it’s design (1941/2?). I can quite believe that it would cost an absolute fortune to rebuild one to ground-running standard, never mind to put in a flying airframe.

Excellent photographs and thanks for sharing. That must represent a large chunk of the RNZAF. I met the guys at a show at Ardmore about 5 years ago and they were really helpful, especially when I told them that I fly an Airtourer here in the UK. It is one of the Hamilton-built ones so it’s a Kiwitourer!

I can sympathise with the problem. I work part-time at Duxford and every time I walk across the landing craft in the West end of the Land Warfare Hall, the “Tommy” in his greatcoat and tin helmet scares the life out of me. I’ve tried to rationalise it and it’s probably due to the very clever way he’s been placed as you always seem to get eye contact. Well done from the Museum point of view but no help for your son.
