Fascinating thread to a non-military (normally) enthusiast which might excuse what could be a dumb question. What was the production total of Harriers/AV-8s? The reason I ask is that the survivor/production ratio seems very high but it was/is a unique aircraft
I’d be there but I must take objection to Propstrike’s reference to the “spammy” end of the GA spectrum. Just for reference, what do you fly Propstrike? Not all of us are wealthy or daft/clever enough to fly historic aircraft and I would have thought that anybody who could bring along a set of wings would be welcome. No wonder the authorities drive a wedge in to GA with that sort of divide and rule attitude.
Wasn’t part of the Air Atlantique collection going to Kemble in a loose association with Delta Jets to form an exhibition that the public could view? Perhaps that has gone on hold with the rumours about Kemble’s future.
Thanks for the link TJ. I hadn’t seen these before and they are a great reminder of what must have been an amazing Summer for avaition enthusiasts where the filming was taking place.
Some good stuff there Ruud. It’s surprising what is tucked away in the smaller museums in Oz and I look forward to seeing what you unearthed at Bankstown.
Thanks for that. It’s in the diary.
As I understand it, the February event will be at Bicester as well, not at Turweston as the mags would have it. Can anybody confirm that?
Janie you make a good point. Badges anybody? Or has that been tried.
I gather from pprune that an Aztec and a Gazelle made it through the murk. My aircraft never left the hangar as it was 3000m in mist and broken at 300 feet. I’m not that brave.
Slightly late answer but I seem to remember that Joan Hughes flew the Demoiselle as she was the lightest pilot they could find with enough experience to get it airborne. She had been a member of the Air Transport Auxiliary and was an instructor at Booker for many years. A very nice lady and very modest too.
I’d vote for Leicester as it’s got a lot of runways, so one might be in to wind and there’s always the long hard one (ooh err missus!) if you are not happy with grass. The cafe is good and they did a reduced landing fee for the pprune mob last year. What dates are in the frame?
I’ll try to get to North Weald on Sunday, Janie. What will you be bringing? By the way I saw a clothing company called de Havilland were advertising at Milton Keynes. Any relation to the famous family?
I was sitting in a cafe on Wednesday recovering from a burst of shopping when I spotted an obituary in the Times newspaper that the cafe kindly provided. It detailed the history of a naval aviator of whom I had not previously heard, Lt Cdr (I think) Baldwin. This gentleman had survived flying the Roc and other assorted naval nightmares, had helped introduce the Seafire and later the Attacker and was instrumental in the development of the angled -deck and through -deck carriers. Did any of you know him and can flesh out the details at all? Another of the good guys by all accounts. God bless.
Sorry didn’t have my camera.
What do you call your goat Moggy?
