A couple of whispers on the Airborne Assault Museum. The originally proposed site impinged on the CAA regs for proximity to the approach and runway at the 24 (M11) end so had to be changed. Where to? The para drop zone was suggested as over Bassingbourn which is an Army Training Base about 6 miles West of Duxford where the LTMA base is at 4500 Feet. And “Learning Slowly” I think you will still be pushing Tiger Moths out of the blister hangar for a while, at least until Arco make up their minds about extending their site

If you look at the white panel on the nose of the Rapide, you will see the title of Scottish Airways who I believe worked in close association with Railway Air Services providing scheduled services during the war. There’s a picture on Page 77 of the Railway Air Sevices book of a lineup of 5 Rapides taken at Renfrew in 1944, all in this colour scheme and all with civilian registrations. However all the passenger windows are painted over for “security reasons”.

Mark 12, I wish I had but it was an “unauthorised” visit so cameras weren’t a good idea. If there are any of the ex-NAPS chaps on this site they may have something

Thanks for the update on the Po-2. Must be tricky for Shuttleworth on how best to deploy their resources. I hope I’ll have an update on the Seafire early in the New Year. Like you I’d love to see one flying again. I remember seeing a row of them at Stretton many years ago. What would they be worth now?

Mike J. Are you being pessimistic or a “Grumpy old git”. My source has Legends as the target for the Seafire.

Tim Manna’s Seafire? And the Shuttleworth Polyfilla Mark 2 biplane or whatever it was called perhaps?

Hi Mike. If you Google “Duxford update” there’s a picture of the Varsity on that site which might show the appropriate aerial.

That might annoy John Towers and his colleagues at MG Rover I would suggest.

Flew over UH this morning. The cars now cover 75% of the runway. Perhaps a good time to make an offer on a Rover? Hairy logistics to move them in 48 hours.

One is still rotting at Duxford and looking very shabby.

Thanks for the responses chaps. I worked in Kenya from 1968 to 1976 and folks could still remember the Lincolns starting up at Eastleigh which was very close in to the city centre. It appears that they were a “sledgehammer to crack a nut” but from SOHC’s photos they seem to have enjoyed themselves. Any more?

Oh dear, do I detect a touch of the “green eye of the little yellow god” appearing over Brendan O’B? The point is that he has a “presence” in front of the cameras which a lot of the other experts don’t have to the same degree. Also he’s a good bloke. I was doing a corporate day at Redhill with a Tiger Moth which wouldn’t restart after a stop for fuel. 32 swings later and an anxious guest in the cockpit, up stepped the man in question complete with crocodile boots and scarf and said “this is the technique”. Mags off, 4 winds forward, 16 winds back and “bingo” off she went. I’ll be first in the queue when he writes his biography.

Sounds like a good reason to join the VAC. How do we join?

That’s a pity. might be worth a quiet word though to see what your planners think. I’m sure there are days when you don’t get through 80 movements.

When our strip ran into similar problems the planner thought it might be possible to add in the slots missed on a day like today which had low cloud and no viz and therefore no movements. Could that help at Turweston?
