Flight 0 requires a port – future plans call for Flight 1 to be swapped at sea bases.

WW2 US carriers lacked enclosed bows. This was why the flight decks were buckled. The hurricane bows enclosed the bow.

AFAIK MIG-19 had SRD-1M Konus, MiG-19S had SRD-3 Grail range only radars.

MiG-19P had RP-1 Izumrud [Scan Odd], MiG-19PM had RP-2U Izumrud 2 [Scan Can].

All Soviet MIG-19 versions had some kind of radar?

However, early Chinese J-6 lacked radar.

Finished the squadron/signal book and am about to start on Yefim Gordon’s Aerofax title. Lots of interesting things to be learned about this airplane it seems. Amazing how many different prototypes and one-off testbeds there were. A few of the later ones look just like a MiG-21 from certain angles!

How was the Aerofax book? How much Soviet service history (in service, out of service dates, etc) and specifications for each model is in the book?

I’m thinking of picking this one up – for some bizarre reason I like the MiG-19 series…..

S-3B had the ASW and minelaying equipment removed whilst still in USN between 1999 and 2000. They remained in service as tankers and for anti-surface warfare till January 2009.

Chile rejected the offer of ex-USN S-3 Vikings as the ASW mission suite had been removed and high operating costs – its an orphan aircraft.

    They went with C295MPA instead.

    This is doubtfully with a T/W of 0.84 to 1.04 and only Mach 1.67 for a F-35A.
A sustained turn capability of 4.95g at Mach 0.8 and 15,000 ft is not really good.

    F-16A Block 15 sustained is:
    9G at Mach 0.9 at 3000 feet
    7G at Mach 0.9 at 11000 feet
    5G at Mach 0.9 at 20000 feet
    3G at Mach 0.9 at 34000 feet
    1G at Mach 0.9 at 55000 feet

So Block 15 would be roughly 6G sustained at Mach 0.9 at 15000 feet.

Only have one sustained figure for F-15C
    5G at Mach 0.9 at 25000 feet.

The real question is – will the F-35 EODAS cueing make a sustained fight necessary?

Anyone have similar figures for the Su-27 and/or MiG-29?

Wouldn’t have that document or a list of later Block functionality?

Problem with the APG-65 was that radar tracking range against a small fighter (say MiG-21) was less than AMRAAM range. the F/A-18A-D was limited by its radar. ISTR tracking range (NOT detection range) was 40 nm.

APG-73 (later F/A-18C/D from May 94, early E/F) increased range by 7-20%. The problem above remained.

APG-79 (later E/F from Sep 06) range is variously as 2-3 times APG-73 (resolution is 3-5 times).
    IAPR 5, page 60 gives 100 nm+
AW&ST (15 Oct 07) gives 100-125 nm against ‘a tactical target’ (this would be a small fighter)
AW&ST (& Feb 2000) gives 70 nm TRACKING range vs 1m2 target. APG-79 radar tracking range is finally greater than AIM-120D missile range against a small fighter.
It has LD/SD, SAR, ISAR, NCTR. I have yet to see a reference for an LPI mode.
Future upgrades are planned to add near APG-81/F-35 modes such as cueing the radar from ALR-67(v)3, integrating IRST to radar, combined SAR/GMTI mode (can detect and ID multiple moving tgts), electronic attack (the much hyped jamming mode), electronic protection (nulls standoff jammers) and electronic support (emitter location).
The cross fusion on the F/A-18E/F already allows the radar to cue ATFLIR, ability for F/A-18F pilot to use air to air modes the same time as the WSO uses SAR mode.

If we take the detection range as 120 nm and use the 40 nm tracking range there’s the x3 range.

Zhuk MA is given as 70 nm vs 3m2 compared with APG-79 ~100 nm vs 1m2 (detection ranges!)

    (1/3)^0.25 = 0.76
    (3/1)^0.25 = 1.32
    EDIT: If they are using 5m2 as per ZIL’s post – (1/5)^0.25 = 0.67

    Zhuk-MA detects 3m2 at 70 nm and 1m2 at 53nm – this is supposedly the ‘FGA29’ demonstrator
    APG-79 detects 3m2 at 132 nm and 1m2 at 100 nm (~roughly the 100-125 nm figure above).
Zhuke AE (FGA35) – supposedly intended MiG-35 radar is 108 nm vs 3m2, which gives is 82 nm vs 1m2

India’s MiG-29K have the Zhuk M1E (Mechanical array), with the MiG-29UPG receiving the Zhuk M2E (as M1E with NCTR). They are claiming 70 nm vs ‘fighter’ (see Zhuk-MA above).

BTW Air International December 1993 gives the E/F RCS requirement as 1.19m2.

Oman has already put its Jaguar OS through the Jaguar 97 upgrade including TIALD, laser guided bombs between 2000 and 2003. They are now orphan aircraft (UK and France no longer flies). Any further updates would be on Oman – and still doesn’t give radar, multi-target BVR, supersonic dash, etc that the F-16 and Typhoon have.

Seems like the next priorities are maritime patrol – currently they use Lynx helos for coastal and SC-7 Seavan. SC-7 have been used for anti-piracy patrols. ATR 42 have been mentioned and would fit in well – reasonably cheap to purchase and run and are already in service with Italy, Nigeria, etc.

Oman had 25 Jaguar delivered for No 8 and No 20 squadrons (Thumrait in south of country also with No 18 sqn with 8 F-16C, 4 F-16D). Around 13 single Jaguar OS and 3 two seat Jaguar OB remain. Thats too small a number for two squadrons.

24 Eurofighter as replacements sounds about right. Supposedly theres to be a new base at Adam in the north. Say 12 a/c each in No 8 and No 20. One squadron can do QRA (2 aircraft alert, 2 backup, remainder local training and maintenance), one squadron spare for exercises, crisis or generally pulling their weight in the region.

F-16s down south for QRA, again 4 QRA, remainder local training – they also have an air to ground and recon role.

Three 12 a/c squadrons gives a strong QRA, plus the ability to actually train for other roles.
