Although nothing to do with Japan – sorry couldn’t resist ;-), check out DMO’s media ‘spin’ on the JSF.

They are upgrading MSIP F-15J and F-2.
~80 F-15J Kai Stage 1 in service 2008 with APG-63(v)1, Type 99 and Type 04 AAM, Link 16.
Stage 2 from 2011/2012 with NVG, HMD, improved EW and possibly IRST?
Non-MSIP (earliest deliveries) are due to retire from 2013 (surely this will be extended until the F-35A enter service?).
F-2 already has GBU-38 and J/AAQ-2 targeting pod and was supposed to have been fitted with improved radar range, HMD, Type 99 and Type 04 AAM from 2011. Supposedly GCS-2, Link and Laser JDAM (GBU-54?) are also planned. Production has ceased and will not reopen as its too expensive.
F-2s have already been used for QRA and new missiles will only help this.
No idea on where they are with these plans, funding has been in small amounts.
F-X (now F-35) is four ordered FY12 and it was planned planned 12 ordered FY16-21. Weapons fo F-X were planned as JDAM, AAM-5, ASM-3 a new designed IR guided glide bomb and recon pod (with F-35 SAR radar, EOTS and datalinks – including MUOS SATCOM, probably no longer needed).
Possible easy fix for F-35C hook problem?

In this context , it will be intersting to see what the japanese will get and when (most likely the initial aircraft will be at an austere standard, and maybe even not up to full spec re avionics, fatigue life, etc .)
Anyway, we’ll see.:)
Four are expected to be ordered in FY2012 (starts April) for delivery 2016. These would be LRIP 8 and Block 3 software. Obviously these would be training only at that stage.
Japan to locally assemble and test aircraft as well as component work:
Pretty decent link with info on CAPTOR-E and earlier technology demonstrators. Selex has plenty of experience with PESA and AESA (as does Thales).

Can the MV 22 really take a AEW radar and a operations suite to accommodate on board operators? I need to find some old articles about adding a self defense canon and how that would effect its capability to carry troops…
See third image down. Thats the Searchwater 200AEW radar in the ramp position.
Any photos of Rafale with GBU-10 or underwing GBU-24? As per: http://rafalenews.blogspot.com/p/rafale-weapon-load-out.html
Heres one on the centreline: http://img210.imageshack.us/img210/1588/gbu24.jpg
NGJ is currently being worked on Northrop Grumman as well. The winner is yet to be selected. Its not a program of record (planned for 2015). Its penciled in to enter service in 2019 on EA-18G, then later F-35B.
RAAF has not yet to make a decision. If it does go ahead its mentioned as three phases:
1) Initially lacks jammer pods.
2) Growler Lite with low band EA only
3) NGJ pods.
There aren’t enough ALQ-99 pods for the RAAF to purchase in any case.
BTW the RAAF is impressed with the F/A-18F – especially the survivability, low observability, countermeasures and radar.
What will be interesting is whether the F-16 deal will alter Omani plans to keep its Jaguars in service as long as support from India is available.
They are supposed to go 2013.
Looks like Oman has kicked Eurofighter in the teeth and gone with the F6 blk50:(
