ENGINE TROUBLE
This Phantom of 892 NAS suffered engine problems whilst cross pollenation(operation from an American carrier) It was returned to the Uk via the air tender as shown in the photographs. The slipway is at RNAS Lee-on-The-Solent, The runway is too short for Phantom operation there so the return trip to Yeovilton would have been by road transport.

What’s in a name?
Some absolutely first rate shots in here! I especially love the Royal Navy F-4K’s on the boat! Post more of those please.
I will search my collection for more photographs, however in the Navy ‘boats’
are Submarines so no chance of that i’m afraid! But what the heck what’s in a name?

Near Sinking due to Krill
The reason the Endurance almost foundered was due to her sea water filters becoming clogged with Marine life (Krill). To clear this obstruction the outboard valves are closed and the internal inspection hatches removed to facilitate the removal of the Krill. At the point of removal of the inspection hatch the outer valve failed allowing a free flood situation to occur. As the Endurance was constructed to civilian ship standards she didn’t have a second valve with remote out of compartment means to close it. Had she been a proper warship this scenario would not have come about.
Sonar Trials Ship
I dont have a picture of the Matapan but I do have one of her predecessor H.M.S. Verulam. She was attached to the 2nd frigate Squadron at Portland and conducted trials for sonar. This was damaged on one occasion when entering dry dock when they ‘forgot’ to retract the dome!

An interesting shot of 728 NAS Hornets with feathered props. The centre Hornet looks to have had its markings hastily applied as they dont conform to the standard of the other two a/c.
