TwinOtter23…,
I’m sorry – now I have revisited my previous post. It does sound very negative. Of course, the two issues I spoke about were outside of NAM’s control.
There has indeed been some very good work done over the last twelve months by you and the rest of the team at Winthorpe. Off the top of my head:
Vulcan B2 XM594 – 40th anniversary of her arrival. I was there when she arrived.
The museums 50th anniversary of first opening. My first visit was during the early Spring, following the opening. Until a decade ago I had visited 3 or 4 times a year. Following a work-related move to the West, I haven’t visited since COVID restrictions. But I keep an eye on activities.
Vulcan B2 XM594 – 60th anniversary of entry to service.
Shackleton MR3/3 WR977 – Excellent work carried out on the nose section with still more to do on the rest of the airframe.
NAM has many exhibits from the Cold War. This timeframe is my “specialist” area of aviation history. Many of my school chums had Vulcan aircrew dad’s who served in the 1960’s and 1970’s at RAF Waddington. I guess that was what started my interest in aviation and the Cold War in particular.
Following my joining the RAF in mid-1974. My first posting was to RAF Binbrook (North Lincolnshire). Where I served with the Lighting QRA force. During my time there I flew in Lightning T5 XS417 no less than five times. She too is, of course, one of your Cold War exhibits.
Keep up the good work in 2024 and beyond.
Maybe Elly and the team at Duxford would be interested to see these photo’s.
This part of Sally B’s history is not that well known.
In just over four decades of supporting Sally B I have heard a brief mention but never seen a photograph.
It was going to move from SDA – and by road. The details are in this thread. However, the local authority have purchased the site and granted XH558 a right of stay.
But if you are talking about it moving to Scampton the first hoop to jump throu’ is in the hands of the Home Office and pending legal action WLDC/SHL v Home Office date TBC.
The possibility of it ever flying again was done and dusted some months ago by the CAA.
I see thanks very much TwinOtter….
Its not been a good year what with the Typhoon pre-prod “DA-4” and now WH791. No doubt you will keep us informed of the latter via this medium.
Once again thanks.
TwinOtter23.Mk.19,
I was just wondering do you report on the activities of/at NAM in an official capacity?
The small boats issue should not be as bad as it is. Poor management by the Government has compounded the issue.
But that is not what this forum is for. This thread is about the future use of Scampton. Earlier I spoke about MOD Catterick and what I believe to be the former RAF Catterick. It is a matter of record the PM has changed his mind about the use of that North Yorkshire site. In the main this has been done because the locals have been complaining. Those locals are his constituents. It also shows a level of comparison with what is happening there and the Governments activities in North Lincolnshire.
By changing the Catterick site to a Removal Centre – further delays the change of use. The site will require a prison style security fence. That fence will require time to install – more delay!! The result will be his constituents will be happier at least in the short term.
One of the best recent initiatives the Government has come up with was levelling up. Central Government funds projects for the benefit of locals across England (if not the UK). Yes, it’s not perfect, but it is delivering positive results.
Development of the Scampton site could be seen as a levelling up project. However, the funds have come from non-Government sources. £300m of private funding to support the local, North Lincolnshire, economy whilst developing the site into something we can all, across the land, be proud and impressed with.
But we haven’t got that have we? A small area of the site has been stolen from the public for the Holding Centre. While the rest of the most famous RAF base ever, is left to rot. It is a matter of record that World-Class companies and universities who have said they would like to move on to the site are having to be turned away.
My fear is that the £300m funding will be lost and in 2027 (or is it now 2028?). The site will be left derelict, and my home county of Lincolnshire will be left to pick up the mess left by the Home Office – reverse levelling up if you will.
Sorry to hear about the fate of Canberra PR7 WH791. It is one of the PR7’s I never got the pleasure of flying in. However, it was on the gate at TTTE Cottesmore when I arrived there in mid-1984. Having later been sold to a private collector and placed on display at NAM. The owner then refused to engage with the museum about its condition.
Its condition on arrival, at NAM, was not good. There is a set of gate guard maintenance instructions – but they often don’t see the light of day. Once rain water gains entry the humidity, within the structure, goes up and I’m afraid the airframe(s) begin to rot from the inside. Sad end but pleasing to know that certain parts will be reused on other restoration projects.
It has been announced that part of Catterick Garrison in the PM’s constituency will not after all be used as a Holding Centre. The PM has said all along having migrants in his constituency was about showing leadership. What is the latest decision supposed to show?
I believe the area, of Catterick, is the former RAF Catterick which was absorbed into the Army base a few years ago following the RAF’s departure.
The Home Office states the area is now being considerd as a Removal Centre. Migrants here will have failed to get their cases proven and are awaiting return home. This site will have a security fence around it – so no mingling with the local population. That is most likely why the PM is happier with that solution.
WLDC have stated they intend to appeal the recent High Court ruling against them. So its back to Court in the new year. Lets hope common sense will be seen this time. Good luck WLDC and SHL.
I have never seen it at all before…
Just heard the High Court has ruled against WLDC and SHL. The Home Office’s illegal continuance, of work, was acceptable! Initially the plan was for 1 year (I believe I read somewhere) is now for 3 years starting 2024.
Haven’t heard from SHL yet but I fear their plans for the site may well be cancelled. A very sad day for the legendary Scampton site.
I thought it would be hanging from the ceiling as per the Lightning in the staff dining room at Dyson’s HQ in Wilts. But it looks like its “crash landed.”
Just been informed that WLDC have issued a temporary STOP NOTICE on further development of the former RAF Scampton site.
The notice was issued under Sect 171E of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990. It was issued at 07.00 today (8 Sep 23) and can last for up to 28 days.
There is concern that ground works, being carried out on the site, will alter the historic heritage of the site. The Home Office have refused to engage with WLDC in order that the works can be understood and risk managed against potential damage to the site.
Further work on the site would be a serious offence against Sect 171G of the said act.
Oracal – My ref to not using it in the USA was commenting on SkyEcho as a product. The FAA have not certified it. I can’t find any evidence of its certification in Europe either. However, other systems are available in the USA and all most certainly in Europe to cover the “gap”.
I have corrected my previous thread entry # 17 Jul 12:58.
Sorry!!
So it was an unplanned ……..
Whilst this equipment, SkyEcho, has been around for a few years now, I have not seen it before. A great aid to situational awareness. Developed for the GA market.
My background of fast-jets and the Chinook use a system under the generic title of TCAS (Traffic Collision Avoidance System). However, the limited space available in BBMF aircraft I suppose needs another – just as capable solution.
But don’t try using, SkyEcho, it in the USA!!!
