RE: Trenton Halifax Pictures
I agree great photos post more !!! , why won’t the RAF Museum restore theirs ??
RE: EE P.1B XA853
Looks like you’ve got everybody stumped on this one Keith ?? , there was a pre-production Lightning in the Marine Salvage yard at Portsmouth about 2-3 years ago , anybody know which one it was ?? , if I remember correctly it was turfed out of a museum to be replaced with a Lightning which was more representable of RAF aircraft .There was a T-33 lying next to it ( ex- Ormonde Baillie ??) anybody know the serial of this ??? , the yard is a toyshop for adults , full of big engines!!!
RE: Thorpe Park collection
Thanks Ant , much appreciated mate !!!!!
RE: aircraft wrecks in Scotland
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-10-02 AT 06:57 PM (GMT)]I agree completely Merlin , ANY dig should be licenced through the appropriate channel AND should have a home to go to , around 1985 there was a dig to try and recover the remnants of a Mk1 Spitfire from RAF Grangemouth OTU , it crashed about 2 miles from my house and was supposed to have formed a display in our local library , I’ve tried to enquire what happened to the remains and the answer I got that they were kept in a shed by a local individual and given to the scrapman when he moved house .If there are to be digs I would like to see some type of end user form to be filled in to confirm the dig remnants are to be collected and kept safely.

Also if I catch anybody with tinsnips and hacksaws at crash sites , I rip the reg plates from their car and cut off all the badges.
RE: aircraft wrecks in Scotland
I agree totally , I first visited the Lancaster on Beinn Eighe around 1988 10 years later there was a lot less there , the fact that there was loss of life involved makes me think all the remaining wreckage should be brought down nearer the Youth Hostel and used as a memorial to the lost crew , I spoke to someone else recently and he told me there was only one prop blade left.
It would be nice to think that some of our museums could stage proper recoveries of the most intact crash sites so future generations can learn from them before they are all hacksawn and axed to bits.

RE: aircraft wrecks in Scotland
I’ve been watching this website for a while and have been in contact with Tom Buchan several times , Tommy and Flash make a point of not recovering any parts from the sites – especially where there has been loss of life , Tom is very approachable although he can take a while to respond to Emails as he works offshore .
It would be a shame if individuals used this site as a map for trinket hunting , although I do think that bigger parts shoulb recovered for museum use , the Firefly and Hudson epecially , I think the Whitley group have already removed parts to use in their rebuild.

RE: MiG-15/17/19
Hi Ant, There was a Mig15-17 on the US Airshow circuit that had a spectacular in-flight fire in the tail section but landed safely , the same guy bought a replacement and it is currently up for sale , I have the name of the guy somewhere – he has a website about the aircraft , I’ll try and dig it out.

RE: Slipstream!!
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 03-10-02 AT 06:22 PM (GMT)] A few years back I flew through the wake turbulence from a Tornado , i was taking microlight lessons , sitting in the front and too busy watching the ground – the backseater grabbed the bar and smashed it off my helmet frantically pointing in front of me , eventually I spotted a Tornado crossing in front of me at the same height as me travelling North-South as I was heading West about 1k out , the Tornado was out of sight but when we hit its turbulence it was quite violent , we did phone Leuchars to ask if they knew of a Tornado which had not read the area NOTAM’s and did get a reply apologising as it was an Italian exchange pilot exiting the area. 2 weeks later , same place , I spotted a Hercules travelling North and then noticed a Tornado behind it waggling its wings while overtaking , luckily we were on finals and did’nt fly through the wash , interesting though !!
RE: MiG-15/17/19
The Mig 15 just looks the part, agile and deadly with cannons instead of peashooters , on Discovery Flight ,Weapons of War series there is an excellent documentary about the Mig 15 and how Great Britain gave the Russians a RR Nene as a gift , this was promptly copied , put in the Mig and eventually the Americans had to develop the F86 to match the threat. There are plenty of in flight shots of a Mig 15 and F86 duo which fly on the US airshow circuit ( I think the Mig may be a Polish Lim or a Shenyang but no-doubt someone will correct me )

RE: Schneider Trophy.
Hi Ant ,I would much appreciate it if you could find which Aeroplane Monthly it was in , hopefully I will still be able to buy a back issue , we moved house a wee while ago and my kind wife took all my Aeroplane Monthly’s and a good number of my Flypast’s to a recycling skip !!! , were there many flyers at Thorpe Park ??? , thanks
Alastair
RE: Schneider Trophy.
Hi Ant , yup it was part of the collection at Thorpe Park , there were a few replicas there , I’m not clued in when it comes to seaplanes but I think there was a Macchi replica there with a few others , can anybody else fill in ??
Alastair
RE: Schneider Trophy.
I think I’m right in saying that the Supermarine S65 replica broke up on landing somewhere in the Lake District killing the pilot (Bob Hosie??).Can anybody else add the date and/or exact location.
It would be interesting to think what would be raced in a latter day Schneider Trophy ??? , imagine Strega or Rare Bear on floats!!!
RE: Save a Sea Vixen
Sorry my mistake , I thought there was a Sea Vixen in the restoration hangar .I’ve been in the Comet (and under her) recently and could’nt see any significant corrosion , I think she still looks good in her Dan-Air colours although I admit she could do with a repaint , the Vulcan still looks good too , she was coated in some type of preservative and the dehumidifier is still in place , they have sealed her up well to keep the nesting birds out .
RE: Schneider Trophy.
Hey Uncle Keith , which one are you in the photo !!
